The latest is that the baby is doing very well. It has been seen nursing and appears to be strong and healthy. And while it is thought that it might be a boy, we won't know for certain for some time yet. The gorilla end of the pavilion has been closed to make sure that there is minimal extra stress around while the group adjusts to its newest member.

And about the number of Charles' offspring ... 46 is FAR greater than the actual number (I believe it is 16, or thereabouts, but not all survived).

Late news: a baby kudu (female) was born a few weeks ago

I will check my gorilla lineage placemat if I can find it to figure out how many offspring he has, thank you for that update Ungulate

Glad to hear that Tom sired one more calf before he passed away, is the mother Daisy? I seem to remember hearing Lulu and Ramosita were his daughters with Daisy

At the zoo today and all of the babies including Ngozis baby look very healthy. From what I saw the rest of the troop is giving Ngozi and her baby space to move around and being very respectful of the situation. The baby P.Horse looks very healthy as well. Saw it nursing in the back pen. The baby moose looks like a very happy baby.It was playing with it's mother and enjoying being alive. The baby snow leopards are beginning to grow up and so are the snow and blue geese babies.

Now on to mating. Both Indian Rhinos were out on exhibit and Vishnu( I think thats her name) looks very interested in Ashakiran. And lastly, two Red Pandas out together, spending alot of time grooming and eating together.

Great Day for the zoo!!!!

Thank you for that extra info animalman!

Just a note, Vishnu is the male and Ashakiran is the female (good job on remembering the names though)

They won't be breedign for a while (successfully anyway) as they are both to young (4 years old?)

Another note is the red panads on exhibit are the 2 females, well they were when I went on sunday.

About Charles' offspring, I thaught I saw the 45 on a document somewhere? Werid.

Wonder if maybe the female red pandas are pregnant yet or if any breedign behaviour has been observed?

If it is 45, most are DNS

Woah?! When did we get another indian rhino? I thought we only had one? Or I might be wrong.

We have had two rhinos since 2006 (Indira passed away in 2008)

So now we have Asha and Vishnu

Do not expect any serious chance of a pregnancy before mid 2011.
Vishnu is in fact 6, whereas Ashakiran is in fact 4 (going on 5 soon).

Cheetah update: Confirmed today that only Mya is pregnant. She is due sometime after the 24th of September, which means that the cubs probably won't be on exhibit until spring 2010 (depending on weather)

Thanks for the cheetah update Brent, this a great news. I don't recall when last year's cheetah cubs were born, but I do remember that they were put on out exhibit near the end of October and were put out periodically on the warmer days.

Is there a possibility of the cubs coming out on those warmer days again?

So I'm assuming there is no more possibility of any other pregnant cheetahs this season?

Thanks for always keeping us all informed.

Very good news Ungulate! We have had many higher profile births this year so this will be another great addition

@Tiffanyanddave: The last cubs were born in August 2008 to Mya (Bomani is the male, Mahala is the female)

If the other breeding couple (Luke and Shamwari) are still together, Shamwari could become pregnant and we would have double the cubs :D (Luke has bred successfully with Mya twice, so atleast we know he is an experienced male and knows what he is doing)

Although its not a serious possibility, there was a female named "Jakichu" at SDWAP who had a calf at four years of age (The first ever hand-reared indian rhino calf named "Choto")

Still, its probably not likely she will become pregnant for a few more years

Cheetah cubs!!! Three cubs born to Mya today - all appear to be strong and doing well!

Super news! 2009 has been quite a stellar year for births (snow leopard, gorilla, wild horse, gaur, kudu, cheetah, sable antelope, baboon and many others!)

Thank you for let us know all this Ungulate, I really love these updates and happenings

Just got back from the Toronto Zoo website

I was looking at the Cute Alert page and the new asian wild horse baby was added

Just some confirmations and clarifications

The mother is for sure Alicia

The post had a few errors though (they may have done this to eliminate questioning and ridicule from IDA freaks)

This is not Alicia's first foal, she had one earlier this year but it passed away (No idea why)

This is Phoinex's 6th foal (Including the DNS Foal)

This is actually Toronto Zoo's at least 10th foal (I think there might have been even more as Alicia, Kitana, Taschi, Magda, Alexandria, Solstice, Nikolai, Ghenghis, Napolean and the new foal were all born here

Also, a name the baby gorilla contest was opened on the Toronto Zoo website
