Good eyes, ZooGoer!
I am 99% sure that Alicia is the colt's mother. This is her first SURVIVING foal, which is probably not mentioned for simplicity (her previous infant was also a male ... I had thought at first that it might have been a filly, making the statement technically true, but misleading!). The 5th/6th discrepancy is the same issue.

The total number of wild horses born at the zoo is a stunning 18 (including Alicia's first)! They are:
Males: Misha, Yuri, Ivan, Boris, Nikolai, Napoleon, Genghis, (Alicia 1 - DNS), (Alicia 2)
Females: Selenga, Magda, Alicia, Alexandria, Taschi, Oksana, Kitana, Naomski, Solstice

Please don't ask me to follow up with where everyone is now!!!!

Thanks for that list Ungulate and don't worry, we would never ask you to do that!

If Alicia is for sure the dam...

The DNS was born in January (I think) and with 8-9 month pregnancy lengths, she would have had to get pregnant with the new foal (Is he named yet?) within a month of losing the DNS!

Alicia's first foal was delivered in April 2008; the gestation period of horses is typically 11-12 months, so January would certainly not work. I think the colt has been named, but I haven't heard the name yet.

Really? Wow, I must be really losing it if I forget that!

Thanks for that correction Ungulate, we would be so lost without you!

I just found at least two more DNS foals from the early 1990s, bringing the number of foals born to (at least) 20, with 17 surviving.

Toronto has very prolific with many species (snow leopards, siberian tigers, wood bison, asian wild horse, orangutan, gorilla, zebra and giraffe are just a few to name) but I find that many species stopped breeding for years (zebra, asian wild horse, siberian tiger, snow leopard) but have just recently began reproducing again

The breeding male, Phoinex... has been quite the stud as well. He arrived around 2006 and it was'nt long before Alex (Or Magda) had Solstice in Spring 2007 (with 6 foals since then)

Ilya (Who passed away late 2007) sired every asian wild horse at TZ before Solstice if I remember correctly though (This is most likely the reason why breeding was halted for so long)

Almost - the very first P. horse born at the zoo ("Selenga") was sired by a stallion named "Belzar", but everyone else (until recently) was from Ilya. (FYI, Magda was born to Selenga and Ilya). There was a moratorium on breeding the horses from the SSP for many years as the population was at capacity (the result of a "baby boom"); Phoenix arrived once the moratorium was lifted (and the population was in desperate need of young animals).

Thary interesting, thanks Ungulate

I remember when the horse's were recieving West Nile shots on Zoo Diaries, they mentioned something about Magda (Or Selenga) breaking there neck or something along those lines and then Magda had to be hand-reared

Also, just a tidbit, One of the two adult female giraffes (I think it was Twigga) had to be hand-reared as well

Although this birth is sadly not happening on TZ soil, it has to do with two animals that came from TZ!

Wait, wait wait though! I read in a news article that Vinu (The Toronto Zoo's original male, now at Bronx) was the father. Vinu is Indira's brother and Nikki is Indira's daughter. This means that Nikki was just bred to her uncle :S  :S

I thought they were trying to prevent inbreeding!

On another note, I recently put two and two together and realized something else. Zoo Atlanta's female tigress "Chelsea" (name ring a bell :P)
was five years old at the time of a press realease in January 2009 (Ironically the same age as our 2003 litter ). Could this mean that Chelsea has since left Dallas Zoo (where she went from Toronto in 2005 with Skylar and Kougra) and now is at Zoo Atlanta? If so, she was seen breeding with her mate "Kavi" back in January (Although no cubs resulted)

Yes on both accounts, ZooGoer.

Vinu is Nikki's uncle (on her mother's side), but I suspect there is a very short list of Indian rhino sperm donors for AI.

Chelsea the Sumatran tiger living in Atlanta was born in Toronto.

Toronto's zoo's original bull was Patrick who now lives at a private zoo in Florida, he was born at the Bronx zoo on Saint Patricks day, he sired three calfs at Toronto two male and one female which as far as I know is Nikki

The Toronto Zoo received two sibling rhinos from Mysore: Vinu in 1976 and Indira in 1979. Patrick (then at Bronx) and Vinu were swapped in 1989/90, and Patrick became the Toronto Zoo's first BREEDING bull. Nikki's parents are Patrick and Indira.

The semen donor for Nikki's fetus appears to be Vinu, who is Indira's brother/Nikki's uncle. (Rhino expecting again | cincinnati.com | Cincinnati.Com)

I the donor was "Himal" (A male from The Wilds) the last time around, so I wonder if maybe they could have used hima again. Im just scared that this will cause some sort of bad effect to the gene pool

Then again, I think Himal is very well represented and maybe they wanted to see if this could give Vinu more of a chance

Any higher profile pregnancies right now that are suspected/confirmed?

Im guessing Twigga the giraffe is probably pregnant by now, as well as Flower the gaur (hey, it rhymes :P) as well as some of our P. horses

I don't think the guars are expecting because they have surplus. It is also winter and they are all in their stalls indoors.

Chrisse the tree kangaroo is expected to be pregnant and is due this week lets see if this will be a success.

As well the baby gorilla will be named on Wednesday!

Very good choice Charles :D, I really think that name fits

Just so were all clear, the pronounciation is nazz - ear (I know for a while, I thought Ngozi''s name was pronounced ne - go - zee when its actually en - go - zee)

As for future births anyways aside from all the bad happenings lately, Twiga (giraffe) is pregnant!
