Thats great news :D ! This is the second time in TZ history that twin moose birthes have occured, last time was in 2001 :)

BTW, what happened with last year's calf?

Just soem info on babies

Twin moose calves are boy and girl, born May 17

A wood bison calf was born May 22, sex unknown

Another male sable antelope calf was born on June 10 to Savannah and Puff Daddy

Two more common marmosets were born on May 30

Baby zebra born a few days ago and a snowy owl chick was born but a couple days later died...

Sad about the snowy owl, would have been good to have even more:)
Is the zebra off exhibit? I know sometimes animals like that will go on exhibit right away, is that the case with this one?

Zack

R.i.p baby snowy owl

Im guessing the zebra was Shani and Shaka, boy or girl?

He was born a couple days ago so probably not on exhibit, and I am not sure about the sex.

Although not happening at Toronto Zoo directly, I have just learned that one of our dhole pups from 2006 that went to SDWAP recently sired pups of his own :)

The newest baby zebra is now listed in the Cute Alert section of the zoo's website

The foal is a female named Tori, born to Shaka and Shani on July 26, 2010

Does anyone happen to know if Kali has left yet for another zoo?

Yesterday at the zoo, the polar bear exhibit was the place to be because Inukshuk and Nikita were seen mating for 45 minutes. Hopefully that means polar bear cubs!!!!!

Also our Indian Rhino is pregnant, so by fall 2011 there will be a little pink calf running around in the exhibit!!!!

Very good news ! Im surprised Asha is pregnant? She and Vishnu are not fully matured yet as far as age?

Actually, I think both rhinos are mature as of last year... I have seen them on exhibit together a couple times.

I'm so very excited! Won't a baby rhino be a real treat for our zoo! I got to feed a baby rhino at the San Diego Wild Park and it was one of my most memorable animal experiences!

Thanks for letting us know!

This is partially true. The female Asha was - as per reproductive activity in the wild - indeed sexually fully mature (at 5). The male is a year older (at 6) and generally bulls do not reproduce before they are 8-10 years old. So, Vishnu is a little precocious. Happily this may mean he will become a very good breeder, being successful so young ...

At the zoo the other day, there was a new baby Emerald Tree Boa in the Australasia Pavillion. He/She was being held in a smaller tank inside the current exhibit. You could tell if was juvenile because it was yellow with black spots, not the usual green with white stripes.

Oh, I forgot to mention that! It was really neat to see one of those as a baby on exhibit!

Great to hear:)
I suppose for some species, it is around that time of year now, hopefully the zoo will have a nice group of young animals over the winter times for next year, especially with all of the new exhibits the animals will be getting over the upcoming times.

Vishnu, the male Indian rhino is one of my favorites at the zoo. The last time I went to the zoo on Labour day one rhino was out on exhibit but the other was in the back, hidden exhibit and was making a big fuss on the metal door trying to get into the main outdoor rhino exhibit to see it's mate. Obviously the doors and everything was setup in such a way so that they can't break out but I was quite puzzled as to why the keepers had to keep the two of them separate if they wanted to be together so much. I can only imagine it's to make sure that they aren't too rough and that they don't endanger the pregnancy.

I was also kind of sad as the keeper never showed up and it was suppose to be the last day they showed up before the change of the schedule to weekends only for the season. I also had gone on the first day of the summer schedule without seeing the keeper that time either.
I know that when I got a chance to talk to the keeper a couple years ago, they mentioned having to watch the Rhinos over night while they got it on, in case of aggressive behavior and it sounded like it didn't work out for Vishnu around 2 years ago.

Anyone know how I would be able to figure out who's the male and who's the female? Especially when one of them is almost completely hidden in the back? I'm guessing that Vishnu was the one off exhibit as he was doing quite a bit to try and get past that door. trying to jump/climb up it as much as a rhino can do such a thing...
