Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo - Developments 2016

Don't see anything about it on the zoo website, but on the news this morning, they mentioned that the zoo would like to inform people playing Pokemon Go, to stay on the designated pathways. There are no reports of any wrong doing yet, but I'm sure you've all heard the stories. Better safe than sorry. Also, apparently the Panda exhibit is a Pokemon stop in the game.

I am one sad camper... they cancelled the July 22 board meeting. Nothing new to discover from the board now until the end of September. I was kind of hoping we would get a sneak peak at the master plan that way or at least learn its release date. Well that was a disappointing trip to the website for me.

Mentioned this a while ago, but the zoo has some new commercials promoting the newborns at the zoo. Here's the one for the Pandas that they finally uploaded to their Youtube page.

I've only seen this one and one for Nandu the Rhino calf.

The zoo also updated the website to showcase the newborns, although the videos aren't on the site as of yet.

Well that sucks. I was looking forward to what would be brought up in this meeting, especially any talk on the new master plan.

I wonder if the meeting will be rescheduled sometime before the September meeting. Let's hope so.

There isn't any mention of it. The board meeting doesn't mean we wont get the master plan but its already half way through July and the last projection I had seen for a completion date was June/July. I would think the board needs to approve it first though. We could be waiting awhile longer.

Good catch. That video is the one I've been seeing the most the last couple days.

I don't have TV so all of them are new to me. Someone in the PR team is really getting things right.

They got a new PR director about two years back who really wants to catch the zoo up, but the PR department is small as I understand it. But they've been doing a lot better the last few years.

Oh they most definitely are doing a great job in that department. They are really shifting the focus and keeping the zoo in the minds of people. I love how the zoo is finally promoting their conservation success stories. It's great to showcase the behind the scenes work that is having a real world impact. Baby pandas are cute and all but they are just part of a much larger story.

Was at the zoo yesterday and found out a couple interesting tidbits during the keeper talks.
For the white lions, they currently have Makali on birth control and the keeper stated there would be a meeting in the future to look at all their options in that regard and if it was desirable for her to breed again at any point.
At the cheetahs, the keeper mentioned that one of the cheetahs, I believe it was Cleo, had been artificially inseminated. As of yet they have noticed any indication that it was successful, but there is still a chance for cubs.

I remember going to a lion keeper talk and someone asked if the boys would be staying at the zoo. The Keeper said said the only way he sees all the boys staying, and remaining intact (not neutered), is if both Tawny Lions (Lindy and Jerroh) pass away sometime soon. That way the boys can be separated as a bachelor group. Chances of the happening are very low.

According to that Keeper, the last thing they want to do is neuter them. They rather find them new homes at other zoos.

Took them a while to promote the play structure. I first saw it on exhibit on June 30.

I got to head to the zoo today. Nothing earth shattering but two things of note.

First the zebra foal is not yet out. I was optimistic but knew it was a long shot. I did try hard to see if I could see it or Tori in the rear holding... I couldn't. A new goal for the next visit I guess.

Second there was a sign for the segways outside of the splash pad. It said this weekend and I think next weekend you could ride them from 2-5 pm for $8. Now this contradicts what was posted on the website but maybe its just a chance to ride them. A stupid little obstacle course was set up in the old camel ride area between the pandas and kangaroos. I wasn't sure if it was for a camp or maybe the segways. Anyway I just thought I would put the info out there.

segways

Last weekend, the old camel ride area was being used as a course for segways. I believe today as well. This is in addition to the sunset tours that were advertised. I went on the sunset tour last weekend...worth it! A lot of fun.

LDTZ thanks for the clarification. Since you were on the sunset tour would you mind giving us all a run down of it. I know the website gives a general idea but its always nice to hear reviews.
