Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo Developments 2018

They have the rhino calves but they will also be joined sometime next month by an even more popular gorilla infant and I have heard quite possibly wolf pups by the end of the month.

Hmm, I heard that one of the Gorillas was pregnant (Ngozi right?), but I thought that the birth would be far later in the year. Wolf pups are interesting, and I bet the return of Amur Tigers will cause a stir. By the way, when will the Tigers go on exhibit?

Someone else mentioned they had heard the tigers will go on exhibit July 1. I haven't heard of them arriving yet. So a July start makes sense. Victoria day is out that's for sure.

Ngozi is the only possibility. Josephine is too old while Johari is Charles' daughter so shes kept on birth control and Nneka is far too young. From all I've heard Ngozi is due sometime early next month and she's huge. She weighs far more than she did with Nassir and Nneka but ultrasounds are only showing one baby so maybe shes further along than expected or she's just let herself go.

The wolf is just a possibility. Breeding was observed and we are entering the birth window. With a new male it's far more hopeful than last year. Hopefully wolf pups arrive and survive.

I haven't heard of any other significant hopes for summer births. I think we can rule otters out as Talise and RJ were breeding recently. The new female lynx maybe... I don't know if she arrived and cleared quarantine and settled in in time for breeding. If camels Goober and Tilly were successful maybe a calf come fall but I've heard nothing. Zebras Jake and Tori were at it last fall but that would mean a fall or winter baby if successful. I don't think successful breeding was seen between the giraffes. And there has been no word on last summer's breeding between white rhinos Tom and Sabi.

At this point remote possibilities for the year are...
Tiger (I'd say slim to none)
Orang
Babirusa (probably none because they are currently holding 4 rhinos in three groups)
Clouded leopard (probably none because they weren't concerned about getting the girls mates)
Pygmy hippo
Red river hog (wont hold my breath)
Spoonbills
Scared Ibises
Giraffe pregnancy very real possibility, baby not so much.
Zebra
Cheetah (only if the cubs are dispersed)
White Rhino
Marabou Stork
Penguin
Lynx
Bison (only real guarantee)
Wolf
Flamingo
Saki
Golden Lion Tamarin
Common Marmoset
Tree Kangaroo
Wombat
Komodo Dragon (I've given up hope)
Camel
Sea Eagle (remote)

I would be happy through with some key transfers in for next years breeding possibilities. We need or could use some new blood or removal of blood.

According to the latest Wild for Life magazine published by the zoo, the official opening date for the Amurs is Saturday June 30. Sadly there is no mention of a members preview.

Maybe there wont be a members preview just because the pull of Amurs isn't as big considering we already have Sumatrans and they have only been gone 5 years.

Oh good my dyslexic ability to proof read and still see what I think I wrote instead of what I actually wrote strikes again! At least I'm entertaining! My guess is they will use the threat of not allowing them to keep their eggs and rear their offspring to keep them scared. Nothing scarier to an ibis than eggnappings!

Unless I'm missing something, it doesn't appear that different to me. Could you elaborate on the changes?

I’m confused as well.

Could it be that the website now says the Panda exhibit is closed?

Well, the Animals section certainly got a few additions and subtractions... the Indo-Malaya part finally has the carp featured (from the website I saw, they still have the fish from the original tank in it). The African Rainforest section finally has the Aldabra Tortoises featured, which I’m hyped for seeing. Something that made me rather curious was that the Americas section has the Blanding’s Turtle in it, which makes me wonder if they finally have an exhibit for them.

A few subtractions that gave me personally worried... the Malaysian Bonytongues, the Chinese gliding frogs and the crocodile lizard aren’t appearing in the Indo-Malaya section, which has me worried as those are some of my favourite animals from that pavilion. The African Rainforest pavilion doesn’t have any of the fish other then the Aba Aba and the cichlids, although judging from some of the pictures on the Media section of Zoochat, they haven’t gotten rid of them... removing the Electric Catfish makes sense since I haven’t seen that thing since forever... there’s plenty other removals, but that’s the ones that I remember of the top of my head.

It’s nice to see that they’re at least finally paying attention to the Animals section, so I’ll give them kudos for that.

Most of what I’m saying probably won’t seem new to you guys, but I haven’t been on the website in a long time, so...

They also apparently seem to have tokay geckos, but I haven’t seen those once...

I know this probably won't be related to "Developments", but... what's up with that one tank in the Indomalaya pavilion with water snails inside of it?

Which one is that? I don’t remember a Water Snail tank in the Indomalaya pavilion. Is it the exhibit with the shrimp, near the Hornbills and Tigers?

Attendance was good for the first three months of the year but April hurt.

The rest I personally found boring.

Aldabras - the first stage started about two months ago or more but of course there were long periods of inactivity. About two weeks ago a company called ROCKSCAPES OF CANADA was working there. They had a panel truck parked pointed to the door near the gorillas. One side door was open so that their name read "APES OF CANADA".

I will try to take a look Wednesday, but between Theo (first White Rhino born there in 27 years) and wolf cubs (first in about 20 years) . . . . . it won't be a priority.
