Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo Developments 2022

As nice as the donation is, it's a shame that they couldn't save the money for the Orangutan Exhibit as they haven't even hit the goal yet. But still a nice action.

The new lemur vestibule has been completed. It has me wondering whether it's purely for keeper use of if it could be used for wild encounters so guests can get up close with the lemurs.

From Dolf's instagram story:

The lemur vestibule is one of the great mysteries right now at the zoo. I really want to know what it is for. If it's for keepers only why would Dolf post a photo of it? It really wouldn't be a point of interest for guest. Why does it need to be totally enclosed if it is a keepers space? The keepers got along just fine without it being enclosed for over a decade. There doesnt seem to be any dressings in there right now so it's not looking like the lemurs are to hang out in there. Ugh come on Dolf and tell us what it's for please.

For what I can gather this looks like something for keepers and/or Wild Encounters like @Kalvin mentioned. I don't think we should see this affecting regular visitors in anyway. This also leads me to thinking that Dolf posted this just to show the completion of just 1 of the few few projects they have going on.

If the funds were for conservation projects they may not, legally, be available to move to a construction project. Funds are often restricted in these ways.

@cypher, would be nice if it was for Wild Encounters where a lemur or two could be brought out to interact with guests. If that is its purpose we likely wont see it being used by guests sadly any time soon. Oh they joy of covid.

Any news regarding the naked mole rats? I hope they're still there and visitable, I want to be able to say goodbye to them on my next visit... :c

@AJ the TZ Guy I was there the day before the shutdown and they were still in the chameleon nursery. There have been no updates or clues as to their future. Stay tuned!

GOH Rhino Ashakiran is undergoing a number of medical tests to try and diagnose the cause of her recent persisting lethargy. Blood, skin, fecal, and urine analyses have failed to find the cause of her lethargy.

The veterinary team, along with specialists from the University of Guelph, will be anaesthetizing Asha to perform a gastroscopy and transrectal ultrasound today to try and identify the problem.

Knocking down a large animal like a rhino is tricky and can be really stressful, so I hope Asha makes out okay and they can find what the problem is. And I doubt they would move her to the WHC for the procedure but that would be a sight to see!

Poor Asha. I hope they figure out what is wrong and can help her. She is super valuable to the SSP population and if she was lost it would be a big blow. I like when they tell us what's going on but also scary when they clearly are preparing you for the worst as well as the best.

No way she's going to the WHC. They were very clear during their Facebook lives from there the largest animals they can handle in there are the Amur tigers. The rhinos, hippos, giraffes, grizzlies and polar bears are all too big. Likely some of larger hoofstock too.

Sounds good to me, that pool is older than dirt and needs a few touch ups. They did a great job on the indoor penguin redos so I'm excited to see what they can do with the outdoors.

Wow kinda surprised they are going all in on a replacement pool. Kinda thought that was gonna be an eyesore for well forever. Please take down the seating! Lets make it beautiful. I dont even have to ask for much. I would love big windows for under water viewing. That's all I ask.

I thought the penguin pool was nice, but if we can have an even better one, that's wonderful. :'3 I just hope it doesn't take too long to build, I was really sad on my last visit when I learned I couldn't see the penguins. :c

I wonder if the new pool has anything to do with the concerns from the zoo regarding the recent string of penguin deaths. I know that is why they sped up the indoor renovations, so I wonder if there were concerns with the pool and their well-being?

@Jefferson, possibly it does have something to do with it. Could be the filteration is an issue. Always was a problem for the seals. But in some of the photos you can see there is damage to the pool itself. It did get a bit of a refurb for the penguins when it opened about 10 years ago but it probably for the most part is still the 1974 pool.

From YT videos you can definitely see that when the seals were there the shape of the pool definitely did not change at all, still the same boring drab concrete tank of water. So a redo would be nice.

@Kifaru Bwana, they did do an update after the procedure on their Facebook page. She did well with everything and they strongly suspect something gastrointestinal but they are waiting on some tests to confirm a diagnosis and firm up a treatment plan.

If it is that an intestinal blockage or colic. That is really bad news for any herbivore and requires immediate intervention. I do hope it is not that.
