Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo Developments 2022

Hopefully we hear something more about Asha this week. However the zoo doesn't always do a great job of updating things. Sometimes they are great. Other times you are kinda left hanging like when they told us gorilla, Charlie, had a hand tremor. They did testing and then said nothing after saying she had been tested.

Do you feel like you’re being mocked when you get to the bottom of Dolf’s agenda item and it says:

ATTACHMENTS
Attachment 1 - Toronto Zoo 2020 Master Plan

@cypher I think you’ve said you’ve attended the board meetings in the past. How long do they usually run? I saw a start time - but not meeting slots for each agenda item.

@cypher this is so exciting! This time next week I imagine we’ll all be going through various stages of joy and/or grief (hoping for a lot more joy!).

@Zooer I’ve been attending pretty regularly over the last year, and the public portion of the meetings usually run for no more than 90 minutes, though it can vary depending on the agenda. Let’s hope we get a long one this time!

A happy countdown to all!!

@Zooer, yes, that Attachment in the agenda was the kicker for me. There was no attachment to be found. So the wait is on. Also, I've never taken part of the board meeting, but I'm hoping to for this one. Thanks for the info on the length of these things @animalman0341

@Zooer, I havent attended a meeting but I would say whatever other ones have been attended probably wont give you a good idea of this meeting because of the master plan specifically. I do know when I attended the webinar on the master plan they said an hour and it ran a fair bit longer. I would assume the real master plan will run for the majority of the meeting and its likely a much longer one.

Guys lets make sure when the master plan is finally available we get all of the discussion over to the Master Plan thread so down the line if we are looking back all the reactions and info is in one spot. I assume it will be something we look back to a fair bit as new projects pop up to compare original concept to actual plans.

I agree with @TZFan. When the Master Plan is finally revealed, all discussion about it should be posted in the Master Plan thread. It just makes things more organized with that thread being a one stop shop everything Master Plan related.

This is something of interested. The zoo has put out an RFP for a "Site Wide Interpretive Communications Master Plan".

To take a quote for the RFP the of this Master Plan is to "define a cohesive Zoo wide storyline identifying specific themes and messages for each Zoo Region and it’s exhibits including personal and non-personal interpretive offerings, as well as pre/post visit experience, online presence, and our voice in the community. The plan will also identify methods of message delivery, target audiences for delivery, and measurements of success."

This Interpretive Communications Master Plan is to work in tandem with the 2020-2025 Strategic Plan, Master Plan, Technology Master Plan, Animal Lives with Purpose Plan. This is the first of its kind for the zoo.

Interesting find @cypher. It's an idea that really sounds like it will bring together all elements of the zoo and focus on guests to a much higher degree then ever before.

This can be something that can really drive home the zoo's conservation message among more of its animal collection, rather than just the larger more population animals. Even amping up education is a possibility under this idea.

It's good the zoo is looking to boost its profile amongst guests and really tout is amazing stories. Go for it zoo! Can't wait to see what you do with it, especially if its anything like the zoo stepping up its social media profile over the last 2 years.

Just seeing that the zoo is looking into something like this shows that they are putting serious effort into moving forward. Too many years of a lull has hurt the zoo in terms of spreading its wings and improve itself. This can help people build those fond memories during their visit.

Very true. After the nightmare of the elephants no one did anything of value to refocus guests and remind them of the fantastic things the zoo does every day. The turn on social media has been good but more can and should be done. Cant wait to see them bring new focus to the zoo. Go team go.

That was a pretty interesting read and the first time I can remember a report really focusing on it. Its been mention in passing other times but this really is cool because they looked at how it broke down and how they have grown and been embraced more. I want to see the report in 6 months as people loose some interest without the Facebook lives. I loved those and just once a week doesnt feel like enough. Teachers would tune in daily so the numbers werent really reflective of the true number watching.

I thought you'd like that one. It's definitely a interesting read, as we never saw these stats before. It just goes to show that embracing social media was the smart thing to do, which we all knew already. Imagine if they embraced this fully before Covid?

Or if they had embraced it and utilized it wisely during the elephant nightmare to defend their keepers. Not saying it would have changed the outcome. The phase out predated the nightmare but it could have been used to get the zoos story out there without the media painting the zoo as the bad guy. In smart hands it could have been used to protect the zoo's reputation.

The zoo has officially reopened! Some important stuff to take note of, non-members once again have to book a time to visit, so if you're not a member make sure you do that before you go. You'll also require an enhanced vaccine certificate with a QR code in addition to your photo ID to be allowed to enter the zoo. The indoor spaces will be operating at 50% capacity and with required masks. Masks will also be required in covered viewing areas and in places where you can get close to high-risk animals. Stay safe out there guys!
