Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo Developments 2023

Per the website, it appears construction has also started on the renovations of the bathrooms at both samba's lodge and the top of the domain hill. A good time of year to get them done as well.

Dolf has released a first look at next year's 50th anniversary logo as well as some plans from the horticulture team for the flower beds

Let's get back on that last topic of preparations starting on the Conservation Campus. It'll be interesting to see how this progresses for the next 3-4 years. Having moved to being able to purchase tickets online will surely help keep the area clear of visitors.

Yeah the old entrance is quite good but now we are in 2023, they need to change the entrance.

Question, @kd20. When has the zoo spend any part of their budget on the monorail? I don't remember seeing that anywhere.

Also, I'm reserving judgement on the entrance entire it's built and complete. I agree that it will mess with the skyline, but seeing it in artistic renderings is different from seeing the finished product.

nah its gonna ruin the look of nature and if you look at the 2022 master plan you will see the monorail

According to Dolf's instagram story the zoo is testing using robots for on-site deliveries

Probably, but we'll see. Master plan mentions the monorail, but there's been no word on anything happening with the monorail. So, I'm betting none of the budget has been used on the monorail.

Lol it is funny how much joy that silly smiley face on the delivery robot brings me. I want the eyes to shift back and forth though. Dont ask why... honestly would just make me giggle more. Oh paint them to loo like different animals! You can have that idea for free Dolf! I can see it now. That cart instantly makes me think rhino and bison.

Ok beside the childish joy it brings me, its a smart idea. Save labour delivering things around the zoo. Keepers or the nutrition team wouldnt have to drive to get meals where they belong. Vets and keepers can talk and just have meds just be delivered. Mechanic is at a broken down vehicle and he can radio for parts and tools instead of having to go back and forth. Pretty practical if it works well.

I really love it too! Seeing these things zipping around the zoo with the big smiley faces would be an absolute blast, I think kids especially would get a kick out of them. Love that idea to paint them like animals, a tiger striped one would be super cool. Plus they're practical like you said and take a load off of the keepers. Might be a lot less need for the classic golf carts. The one thing is getting them down the Domain, not sure if they'd survive that trek.

It's crazy that we really are living in the future, never in my life did I think I'd see a robot at the TZ but the times are a-changing as they say

@hyena142 I think you could probably get them up and down the hill. Its a nightmare to walk and the zoo is careful about vehicles and weights but these are small. Well maybe the plan is for bigger versions later. Anyway they might be able to get ones with tracks too that would maybe handle the hill better? No clue but even then how much thought do we really need to put in the Domain? Soon enough barely any.

@TZFan That is true, in the future even if they keep using the Domain for other purposes like flex animals they probably wouldn't need many deliveries. I'm pretty sure they already have supplies down there anyways just because it's more convenient than going up and down the hill

i like the walking the i think its good excersie but they should bring back the monorail for some people who don't wanna walk to the canadian domain

we should get some better food options at our zoo as well because africa restaurant and carribou cafe have the same thing maybe bring back the mcdonalds

It would find better use if it could be made to clean up the garbage and discarded baby diapers in the parking lots after hours.

If the robots work out they might look at that. You are very right using robots to clean the garbage would be a good use of them I hadn't considered. Honestly once you get them its just a matter of them being designed to perform for various tasks.

First hand experience, the dirtiest animals in the zoo are the humans.
Canadian domain is easy to access by truck off hours. The liability issues associated with a robot operating during public hours would make them impractical, all it would take is one brake failure going down a hill and it would go the same way the monorail went.
