Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo Discussion thread 2023

@Uwshuhd1 as Zoo adventures said what's supposed to happen is Kiko from Toronto and Nabo from Calgary are gonna swap so Nabo can mix his killer genes with our highly ranked females Mstari and eventually Amani. The transfer is definitely late but it could happen any day now, if it's gonna be this year they'll probably want Nabo here soon so introductions with Mstari and potential breeding can be done over the winter.

If you guys checked out Hyak_II's post answering the exact same question on the Calgary thread he said its on hold indefinitely. Calgary is overly attached to Nabo and they dont want to let him go and supposedly Kiko has a foot problem and Toronto doesnt want to send him until he's better. So who knows. There is only so much Toronto and Calgary can do because neither of them own the males in question. If their owners tell them to do it they kinda have to listen. Toronto on the flip side owns both Mstari and Amani so they have more say in keeping them both here. Matu is probably owned by the same zoo as Kiko.

Because some of you are newer, ownership of animals born usually rotates between 2-3 zoos. First borns usually go to mom's owner. Second borns usually go to dad's owner. And they rotate back and forth. Now sometimes the zoo doesn't own mom or dad so they then drop into the third spot and get baby 3 as the breeding zoo. And the rotation is in threes then. However sometimes zoos work out different deals too based on gender. I know with the gorillas there was a complex deal based on gender when we sent Ngozi's mom Amanda to Woodland Park to breed with Vip who was owned by Milwaukee. Her first was a boy who's ownership went to Woodland Park (his father was Congo who was owned by Honolulu). Toronto in turn got the first born female which was Ngozi. Her younger sister Cayala is owned by Milwaukee because it was Vip's zoo's turn to own. And youngest sister Uzumma went to Woodland Park. If Ngozi had been male I think she would have gone to Milwaukee and we would have had to wait for the first female or third male. Calgary made some kind of terrible deal with Toronto when they needed to replenish their group. Under the reign of their silverback Kankinga we sent Natasha (died too young to breed), Tabitha, Julia, and Zuri. Tabitha gave birth to 3 babies and Toronto got ownership of all three, MBundi, Zwalani and a stillborn (Mbuni has 2 sons and a daughter all of whom belong to their moms zoo). Julia had 5 babies and Toronto again owned all 5, Ntondo, Nfoki, Jawara, Barika and a stillborn (Barika is the only one with offspring and her daughter Alika belongs to Toronto too). Zuri has 2 who both are Toronto's, a girl she failed to care for and died and Yewande (Yewande in turn had a baby that didnt make it and a son Okabe but I dont know who either belong to because it could be Toronto, Atlanta or Calgary for either one). Not a single baby born under Kakinga to a Toronto female belonged to them.

If you read TZ Fan forum,(Toronto zoo Births, Deaths and Transfers 2023) You will see that Kiko will go to Calgary and Matu to the Lincoln Children's Zoo. And there will be Nabo from Calgary

Is that the post from the first of 2023 back in January? Or is there a later one. If the January one yes I have seen it but nothing has happened yet and just wondered if it was still going to or was it going to move to next year or was it not going to happen now.

@TZFan Oh that's a bummer but I can relate if Calgary doesn't wanna let Nabo go. Hopefully a solution gets figured out or we track down another male who's genes are as good as Nabo's

Yes it is the same one. Next year maybe TZ Fan gonna make a new one

So, big annual zoo trip coming up next Saturday, super excited! You can all expect to see me post a full trip report after too, I loved doing that last year! To those of you who go way more often than me though, I want to ask some questions to optimize my plans in advance.

1. How's the Kids Zoo looking? Last couple years I've been there, it was pretty empty. Is it any different right now, or would I be better off skipping it this year and saving myself some time?
2. Are any animals currently off display that aren't mentioned on the TZ site?
3. Are any aviaries still empty or closed, and is the Australasia Pavilion still using an alternate walkthrough route?
4. Are the peacocks out and about?
5. I noticed the site said the greenhouse is closed for renovations and plants have been moved outside for viewing--does this include the corpse flower? I've been meaning to finally see that!

Sorry if any of these were answered elsewhere and I just didn't see. <:3

Have a good time! It should be a good weekend for it.

1. Kids Zoo - the same (or maybe even a little more empty with moving the guinea pigs, and the Turkey Vulture moved to the domain etc.)
2. Animals off display - the list on the website looks up to date
3. Aviaries are "re-opened" but are no longer open air. They've put up netting so that the birds are safe, but you can now walk through all of the typical paths. Australasia is back to it's normal path
4. Peacocks have moved to the newly refreshed/re-opened outdoor Australiasia aviary that they completed this summer
5. Greenhouse - that I don't know!

Best of luck at the orangutan habitat - I hope you see one of them out and exploring! If not - I would double back at the end of your day for a second shot at it. It's worth it.

1. Aw jeez :c Well, I guess at least I can save myself 20-30 minutes. Where did they move the guinea pigs to though?
2. Good to know :3 Now I wonder though whether or not to do Eurasia this year--I'd love to see the camels again, but I wonder if I should bother with the whole walk or just see the animals at the start of each end of it instead.
3. I hope they'll be able to make them open-air again sometime... Is the netting hard to take photos through?
4. Aw, they're not walking around anymore? That was one of the classic highlights of the zoo... ;w; Australasia seems like an odd place to put them too, since peacocks originate from India and became distributed through continental Eurasia.
5. Hope I can find out quick then <:3

And thank you for the advice and good luck wish! ^o^ I really hope nothing goes wrong too, I'm right at the end of recovering from a very poorly timed cold... <:3

To answer 2 through 4, I did the red pandas in Eurasia (not my personal choice but my family didn’t want to do it), aviaries aren’t all netting, some are metal caging, overall easy if you line up your camera lens right, and I agree that the peafowl should definitely be wandering again but I get that it’s for the safety of the birds.

@AJ the TZ Guy I think the guinea pigs died out? Or they moved to outreach. Either way they aren't on display any more. In any case I'd say unless you really wanna see pet store rabbits I'd advise skipping the Kids Zoo

For Eurasia I'd still say it's worth it even if the snow leopard exhibit is still under construction, you'll regret not having seen baby camel Carrie while she's still little if you miss her.

The peacocks are in the Australasia aviary because of avian flu concerns, they can't be free-roaming right now or else disaster could strike. Hopefully we'll get back to free-roaming someday

Oh jeez, I forgot about Carrie! Thank you for reminding me, I'm glad I checked here before leaving for the trip! :'3

I'm thinking maybe with the extra time from skipping Kids Zoo this year, I'll head to Indo-Malaya first, then turn back to the Welcome Plaza, get my annual poutine and proceed on my normal "Australasia first" route, making a second Indo-Malaya stop at the end if I didn't get a good view of the orangutans outside before. :3

At least one of the zebra males was in the ostrich exhibit today, not sure who

My guess is its Jake. Obi and Poe are hopefully being readied for shipment to St. Louis Zoo WildCare Park before the snow hits but they might not be ready to receive the boys yet. They are to be the stallions of a new herd so I doubt the zoo would split them up in order to keep them very friendly with one another. Jake is the most logical choice.

I'm guessing it's Jake too since I only saw the one, zebras tend to stick together. Here's hoping the boys get shipped out this year and we can hope for foals again starting next year

Well we wont get a foal next year unless someone knows they have been breeding Jake and Tori this year. They can breed again but I dont think the zoo will until the boys go and our new female Maizy arrives from Edmonton. If the boys were to leave this fall then I would guess Maizy would arrive for the spring and once the girls are integrated then breeding would start.

So my trip went mostly pretty terrible for a number of reasons, the only bad zoo day I've ever had, and I'm not even sure I want to write up a trip report anymore... I at least saw Carrie though, I'm pretty sure, and one of the orangutans outside on the first try, so there's a couple positives ;w;/

I visited the zoo yesterday and had one of my best visits in the last couple years unfortunately no Orangutans were using the new outdoor space but the new renovations to the Australasian outdoor aviary looked quite nice
