Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo Discussion thread 2024

During a zoomobile ride the staff called the Indian rhino habitat the “old greater one-horn rhino habitat” and said that the babirusa are in there now, which makes me wonder if Vishnu has been moved. The TZ website says he is not currently on exhibit.
When I visited last week, they said that Bucky the babirusa currently lives in the indian rhino exhibit. I think that the zoo want to keep bucky over there. Maybe Vishnu is behind scenes?

Yes, one of the ostriches is with the kudu this summer and I think has been introduced to the some of other birds that have been with the kudu in the past (i.e some of the ground hornbills and I think the marabou storks).

Also I believe one of the male zebras is staying with the Watusi, I don't think on exhibit yet, but you can sometimes see from the zoomobile, when you drive by the holding.

Seems like lots of new birds species, between the pheasants and the new additions in the Australasia pavilion. Nice to see for sure. I am not really sure where the zoo is at with bird flu precautions. It seems some are out this year (i.e. all the savanna birds, ostriches and macaws, but I think some are still not out (i.e. flamingos in the old spider monkey). I imagine if there was an outbreak near by the zoo we may see this shift and some of the animals go back inside. Fingers crossed we can avoid this!

The male Zebra is Obi. I am not sure where Jake and Poe are.

@BovidBabe
Thanks for sharing the news, is Teeka female? That is my guess based on name, but I have been surprised the past.

@Akula
I know they had some of the zebra in the old wildebeest enclosure last summer, not sure if they are there again this year?

@Zoo adventures
I think Vishnu is behind the scenes, I haven't heard anything otherwise, but perhaps they have found a home and he will be moving sooner rather than later. One thing I will note is the map on the zoo's website has completely removed the rhino icon and replaced it with the babirusa. Time will tell, but the phase outs seem to be real :(

@milkandcookies
I think that is a new holding for the wildebeest, although with no wildebeest I wonder what the plan will be, that being said, it could likely be used for a variety of hoofstock.

Interesting to hear they are planning to breed the otters. Will see what comes of that. My thought would be that they would plan to move the otters to the front and then perhaps renovate that part of the America's Pavilion.

Vishnu is still there - at least he was on Jun 27th when I was last there. Yes all the outside signage was removed (including the big rhino outside the barn) and Bucky the Babirusa was in the paddock, but the barn was open and you could see Vishnu enjoying a shower through the back door. I assume they use those other smaller paddocks behind the barn to give him outside time.

Teeka is a female. She was rescued as an orphan cub In December of 2014 (so she is almost 10, not 14! Spotty math on my part!). She was found on a construction site in Calgary. According to a Winnipeg Free Press article, she was planned to be a part of a SSP. I know there was an older cougar by the name of Max, but I don't believe Teeka produced any offspring. If someone knows otherwise, let me know!

Visited the zoo today and noticed some signage on the Crested Seriema/former Komodo exhibit confirming the Seriema will be temporary and they plan to have a new Komodo in the exhibit by the end of 2024.

Not sure if its super newsworthy since it's not much of a surprise, but its good to have confirmation and a time-frame for what they want to do w/ the Komodo space. The signage didn't say anything about where they plan to get one from, unsurprisingly.

Does anyone know of any videos or other media that goes over and assesses Toronto's various habitats? Like a review of the exhibits design or theming. (Most I've seen is Geekism's.)

@nya~ @BovidBabe
A new Cougar and Komodo dragon on the way? Hype!

Great update. Thank you!

Few updates from a recent visit:
  • Was told by a keeper that the snow leopard cubs are doing well. Keepers have given them nicknames based on the shape of the spots on their backs: one is “T” for their T-shaped spots, and the other is “Monster” because they have spots in the shape of the monster energy logo. Keeper said they hope to have them out by late August-early September, but we might have to wait until October.
  • I caught a camel keeper talk. Zip and Suria have been separated from the rest of the herd for breeding, so hopefully we’ll get a new camel baby next summer. Also apparently Carrie is owned by African Lion Safari because that’s where Zip is from, and in the next few years she’ll be sent there to be used in their breeding program.
  • The Indian rhino house has a sign on it about Vishnu’s whereabouts:
    • “Don’t see a rhino? For optimal well-being, Vishnu has access to a behind-the-scenes outdoor habitat and can choose to go in and out as he likes. If you don’t see him now, he is probably hanging out in his backyard.”
  • I also caught an orangutan keeper talk but it was very difficult to hear. I think she said Kembali will be moving sometime in the near future. Ramai is recovering well from her health center visit, drinking smoothies and spending time with Jingga. The dentist removed 6 teeth, and the fertility specialist removed a polyp (I assume from her uterus) which they said was preventing her from reproducing.
  • I overheard the gorilla keeper chatting with another guest (didn’t have time to ask them any questions myself). She said TZ doesn’t have a set time for when they will move Sadiki and Nassir, they are waiting until they can find two zoos that need males so that neither of the boys has to be housed alone. Also all of Charles’ upper teeth have been removed to prevent infection.

Interesting, this is the first I had heard about orangutan kembali (0.1) moving. I suppose if there is a place he could go on a breading recommendation that would be a good thing.

I imagine finding a place for both the gorilla boys to go at the same time would be hard. My understanding is that the AZA is looking for most breeding facilities to also be able to hold a bachelor troop as well. I am sure it would be easier with only one group, but maybe not realistic.

Actually, moving two young, male gorillas together would be easier than moving them separately. Typically, gorillas in bachelor groups integrate easier if they've been together since a young age. That's why you often see bachelor groups form between multiple individuals that were born within a few years of each other at breeding powerhouse zoos. That said, Sadiki is genetically valuable and of the age where he could potentially become a silverback at a new zoo, so that could be a possibility that complicates potentially moving them together.

Of course, given that only three zoos in Canada house gorillas, the possibility of needing to move to a United States zoo would also push back the timeline due to permitting requirements.

Does Sadiki's 'gorilla' genetic status override his health concerns? He's had pneumonia several times I believe there were plans to vaccinate him for it but don't know if that ended up happening.

Hopefully Sakura (0.1 red panda) does well. The zoo has had some unfortunate luck with the Red Pandas after the death of the kit last year. Hopefully this isn't anything major and she bounces back quickly and her kits do ok!

It could be entirely accidental - but after noticing the greater one-horned rhinos disappeared from the physical copy of the zoo map (and replaced by the babirusa) I had a couple weeks ago, I was checking out how they were representing the new Indo-Africa boardwalk and notice the rhinos are back.

Probably doesn't mean anything considering what they've said about Vishnu's (greater one-horned rhino) medical condition and his access to the back paddock, but was a hopeful observation.

@Zooer Glad I am not the only one that notices and reads far too much into these little changes.

I agree, I don't imagine it changes anything, but I can dream that there is a plan to keep the rhinos, right?
