Awesome!Hope you have a good visit.I wonder whats new at Tundra Trek lately.Hey,you knwo how you said that if the cutbacks were made fuinal, the zoo would build the reindeer, musk oxen and caribou exhibits once they got the funds.Well,I was just wondering whenthat would posssibly be and Also.I seriously don't see why the zoo feels the urge to phase them out because of fence prices as they have a perfectly fine exhibit in Canadian Domain? The zoo would be a great place to breed musk oxen as the temperature is great and the paddock is huge.Did the zoo even ever have more than one or even breeed them?

Enjoy your visit! I'll be going in a few weeks, I think.

They did have a Musk Ox herd, not sure if they bred or not, though. I believe (though not certain) that the caribou once shared their exhibit. I agree it is a shame that they're being phased out. Darn cutbacks.

Speaking of exhibit sharing, I'd love to see more mixed species exhibits, just not sure which species :)

The caribou and musk ox will share the exhibit if everything goes well. I do not know when the other exhibits will be built all I know is that the cutbacks arenot final according to the volunteer in the Americans Pavilion. Anyways I am off to the zoo now.

Have fun!I think the woodland caribou actually lived near the bison fields but im not quite sure.I hope they do re-acquire them though

Hi all.
From what I understand, the Rangifer tarandus on exhibit in the Tundra Trek will be European reindeer (the ones on display in Eurasia right now). As you may remember from earlier this spring, the zoo has enough trouble maintaining one subspecies of reindeer, let alone doing so with another subspecies (in an exhibit right next door).

As for the musk ox, I think the plan may be to close the domain once the North Site has been redeveloped, or at least change it into more of a nature walk, rendering the current exhibit useless (or, if not, there are bison currently off exhibit that could use it as a home). At one point the zoo had a rather large herd of musk oxen (8+), and bred the species on many occasions (the current male was born at the zoo).

To my knowledge, musk oxen and caribou were never exhibited together at the zoo. (The caribou were initially only visible from the monorail, and for a time were on display in what is now the moose exhibit). During the (initial) design of the tundra, the musk ox / reindeer area had to be subdivided to ensure that the species could be separated should the mix not work out. (Musk oxen are not the nicest of animals ... or the easiest to keep ... the current male fatally gored at least one female). The fact that the most recent plans show only a single space strongly suggests that musk oxen are out (sorry!).

High maintenance of the Musk Ox -- I believe it! They just look like tough customers.

I like the idea of the old Canadian Domain being turned into a walking trail. It's so gorgeous there in the fall time.

Well, I don't want to keep you all waiting. the Tundra Trek how we know it is comming along greatly and I do think it can be opened as soon as late winter lets say March. The IS a polar bear house visable to guest know, its not complete but the foundation, walls, and doorways are all complete. I would say in about 2 weeks they will start the inside. The rockwork around the bridge area is complete acording to the plans in the Americas Pavilion. The rockwork everywhere else, and yes there is now rockwork everywhere looks to be about 70% done, the back of the bear exhibit has rockwork now. They are starting on the upper parameter wall now (this wall will hold the bears in, the lower parameter wall would keep the bears in if they were digging) There is leveling of the ground for the arctic wolf exhibit and the exhibits around it. The covered seating for the America's Restaurant looks to be complete. Are they going to change the name of this restaurant? Overall the tundra is comming alone nicely and it is close to about 55% done. Pictures will be uploaded in the gallery soon.

On a side note, when any of you go again visit the Canadian Domain, from what was said on the zoo mobile is that this area will be closed once the Tundra Opens.

Thats odd.I wonder wh ythey'd close it right now because of Tundra Trek as it has not much to do with it and the new Canadian Domain is years away

I can't believe he fatally gored one or more females!WHen was this as in 200 there were about three or four. Also, did anyone here know that Tonghua the siberian tiger actually killed his first mate Baba?Apparently, the zoo had introduced them, things were going well so the zoo let them spend the night together. The next morning they came in,they found her dead with bite marks all over her from Tonghua

Ungulate mentions it in Page 7 of this thread.

Tundra Trek's coming along really nicely! The wolf exhibit looks so much more spacious than the old ones. The polar bear exhibit looks great already and a far cry from their old exhibit; the rock work reminds me of the lion exhibit.

OO I see it now, sorry. And to everyone picctures are in the gallery now.

Although it is a long way for most visitors to walk I think that is a shame. I have always liked the Marsh and enjoyed the walk that goes around it now. We haven't been to the Zoo this year so I'm sure there must be a lot of changes.:)

Has anyone been to the zoo lately, although I was there a week ago I would like to know if anything has changed there.

I may be going this coming Saturday so If im there,i'll check

Well, I will teel you this. Today I wasn't in the mood to do anything so I called up a friend and decided to go to the zoo. Let alone I did not know it was Teacher Apprecitation day. Altough I did the whole zoo, I went and saw the Canadian Domain and the Tundra Trek is moving a lot faster, they already started the roofing of the polar bear house as well as made some additions to it, the arctic wolf exhibit has somewhat of a wall now. The fencing is no longer present at the Americas Restaurant it has been moved. I do think the restaurant is complete.

The tiger fact was something I found out on Zoo Diaries. Here's another fact about the tigers,When Tonghua and Tatiana had there first cub in 2000,she actually ended up accidently biting off its leg while biting its umbeclical cord in half! They ended up putting the cub to sleep. Her's another one,a few years back when the zoo had to give the kangaroo's injections, one of them scratched a keeper right in the cheek the day before his wedding!

While there be any additions to the Rainforest Pavilion as in animal wise?
