I have uploaded 8 new photos of the Tundra Trek from yesterday as I promised. If you have any questions just ask.

According to the Cities Budget released today, the Tundra Trek will be completed this year along with the mandrill and other south side of the african pavilion exhibits. The zoo is slated to get giant pandas in 2014 - 2017 and Penquins in 2016 - 2018. The elephant exhibit is planned for 2015. (40 million) The Animal Heath Centre to be constructed in 2012. Orangutan inddor/outddor exhibit in 2013. I found this really interesting that most of these projects didn't move much. I thought the zoos construction would slow down completely to my surprise that did not happen. Another feature will be a themed ride in the Eurasian section once complete.

Maybe not a development, but certaintly future! Ungulate I have heard that the Toronto Zoo is looking to bring in 3 rhinos within the year, two females from South Africa and 1 male from the US, is this true, and is there any other animals that are/plan comming to the zoo this year? Are they going to try to get another malayan tapir for Tanuck?

I have heard talk of bringing in three white rhinos, although the locations and timeline on this are quite vague. However, rest assured that things are in the works, as only Shaboola is left.

Regarding the tapir, there has been talk for several years now about bringing a female up from the Bronx Zoo. However, there are currently concerns about our ability to manage two individuals if they do not get along (especially in winter), and even more so if they end up breeding.

I guess it makes sense in terms of space! Have you heard of any new animal species comming in? There have been numorous "quotes" shall I say, about the zoo expanding there collection.

Quartz92, according to the Spring 2009 Collections magazine for members, we got some Tree Shrews in :) I am assuming they will be exhibited in the Indonesian pavilion. If I recall they were also a species the zoo had in the past (in the Australasia pavilion when it was an Eurasia pavilion). Snow geese are another and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that wolverines will also still be included in the tundra display.

OO very very cool, I am assuming that the Spring Collections Issue is out! Haven't yet got it. Thanks very much Meaghan for the earlier notice! I am trying to get some friends together for a trip on Saturday, I will let you know if I see them!

You're very welcome! Definately very cool. With there being a number of empty exhibits in Indonesia (where I'm thinking they'll be), I think they'll definately be a wonderful addition. Fairly rare too in North American zoos, I believe.

There will also be a restaurant overlooking the new wolf exhibit.

Tree shrews should be interesting, the look cool. The wold idea is another good one as well

I believe the wolf viewing is primarily a re-vamping of the former Polar Patio.
I've not heard where the tree shrews are going yet, but I can't see them anywhere else but Indo.

Maybe in one of the tank up by the tiger viewing

I was just thinking this! The TZ designers have already shown how nicely a refurbished aquarium can accommodate other species (the invertebrates in the refurbished Australasian tanks come to mind). I think they're roughly the size of my pet rats but I'll have to look it up, so they wouldn't take up too much space :)

It would be very exciting to see a baby rhino at the zoo, I think the zoo has had white rhino births before I am not sure? Does anyone know what animals have been born in 2009 (the first 2009 birth)?
