It would be a great addition, and if they plan to keep him, and build a new exhibit on the table land, the addition of more, and possible breeding. It may be that the zoo is used for a temporary home, then he will be moved to another facility, or even relocated to northern Ontario.
 
I am going to the zoo tomorrow and will take pictures of the Tundra and post them for people to see. Is there any inside information that anyone has heard about?
 
I went to the zoo again today! This has been the first visit in spring! It was great, I was extreamly happy to see white rhino, and river hippos! Lots of animals were outside a great day to go. As for the Tundra, well a lot of progress, I think the reindeer exhibit is half finished in terms on leveling the exhibit, and might be a raised exhibit. Close to the one they have now. The arctic wolf exhibit is almost completely finished by the means of looks. The polar bear exhibit is taking shape aswell. I think I have figured out where the waterfall is going to be. The snowy owl aviary is nearing completion. I can see animals move into the exhibits in May at the earliest.
On the bad side I don't think Chrisse (Tree Kangaroo) is pregnant, because the public can veiw her again. The coral tank was covered, I really hope it is nothing bad because it was amazing. In the African Pavilion they are doing some renos... the thacht roofing over the Malawi tank to the gorillas is gone! I wonder what is happening there?

Thanks for the update! Planning on visiting next week, if possible. The tundra seems to be coming along nicely; once it's done, is the woodlands area going to be done or is it the Eurasian? I'll miss the Amur Tigers, Snow Leopards, Dholes, etc when their exhibit closes for reno but it'll be worth it to see them in a new home.

Maybe it was a false pregnancy for Chrissie? Sad in any case, I hear there has to be at least 5-6 births a year, but at least her son already contributed to two! Hope nothing's wrong with the coral tank; maybe just regular tank maintenance.

I think its Eurasia next. I dont think the Amur Tigers, Snow Leopards or Dholes will be off exhibit, cause they are building Eurasia where the reindeer and camel exhibit are. I am hoping nothing is wrong with the coral tank too!. Hopefully you visit next week, it was amazing to see all the animals out again!

The platfrom is for the arctic wolves. I think it might be an enrichment item.

Great article Meaghan. I'm excited that they mentioned Wolverines. I was wondering if they were still trying to work them in.

I'm kinda sorry I didn't go Sunday, I had thought about it. sounds like it was a good one. I bet the River Hippos aren't out today.
 
I really wish the zoo had room for more hippos, that reminds me anyone know of any new animals comming to the zoo? Ungulate, have you heard any information on the Elephant expansion or is the zoo just focusing on the North Site Redevelopment Project?
 
I hope wolverines make it to the zoo, I still can't scope out where the arctic foxes are going... The last couple of times I have been at the zoo I wasn't able to see the red pandas on exhibit. Hopefully they can get more and start up a breeding program at the zoo.
 
According to ISIS, there is only one male red panda at the zoo, and the Akron zoo is sending a male. Unless, they are bringing a female to the zoo.

Most of the new developments are on hold, thanks to the economy. We're going to be getting some minor improvements this year (finishing out hippo chute and resurfacing the hippos' indoor pools), but the elephant expansion keeps getting pushed back. The push right now is definitely the to get the Tundra finished ... they have recently been working on the rockwork some more: it is currently a shade of blue! (Hopefully just a primer!) I am fairly certain that the wolverines have been cut from the plans. The Arctic foxes have already arrived at the zoo; they may be getting partial access to one of the bear exhibits (not sure though).

I think the Africa pavilion reno is going to happen this coming winter. The current construction in the building is to install brackets on the roof to allow the glass to be replaced. The thatch over Lake Malawi had to be removed because they are welding overtop, and falling sparks pose a major fire risk.

With red pandas, we actually have two new females; our last male "Ferrous" passed away late last year. Hopefully we will be able to repeat our past breeding success when the new male arrives.

Other news ... Jack the Amur tiger and Subira the gorilla have both moved to the Granby Zoo in Quebec. The baby sable is a male, and Savannah is being a much better mother to him than to her firstborn.
