Summer 2011
Shaka with the females; bred with Shani resulting in pregnancy
Jake on his own in the exhibit by the ostriches

Jake with the females; plans to breed Tori and Jake
Shaka in outdoor holding/exhibit by the ostriches
 
Ok so I have a question thanks to all this talk about whos the father of Shani's baby, and it has nothing to do with zebras. I've never really considered it until now but I havent read anything about our ostriches really. How many do we have? Who are they? Do we ever breed our ostriches? If not does any one know why? Personally I think it would be cool to see them running around with a bunch of chicks.
 
Currently we have Ms Ellie (F), and Orville (M) who together have not reared any chicks. However, a few years ago chicks were raised by Ms Ellie and another male, I cant recall his name, I believe it was Frank or Fred, something generic like that I believe. I would assume the current pair has bred before but I don't think the keepers interfere with the eggs and let them raise them on their own as there is no demand for ostriches in zoos. With that being said there have been many times before where the nests have flooded killing the eggs due to rain, etc.
 
Malayan Bony Tongue is now in the Mekong Barb exhibit, bony tongue exhibit has been boarded up. Casque Hornbill moved back into the Hornbill Aviary, Red Billed Magpie has been put in his old exhibit (old Prevost Squirrel Exhibit).
 
Is the African Dwarf crocodile being moved? There was a crate in its exhibit.

Also, the giant panda holding building looks like it is up now, there is some walls.
 
The crate in the Dwarf crocodile exhibit has been in there for quite sometime....being there so much; I'd say its probably been in there for over a year.

Nope. The crates are there so that the crocodiles can move between the exhibit and the holding. There is one for each crocodile and the small one is always open so that the female can get away from the male when needed
 
At the Cheetah keeper talk today, a keeper mentioned that the zoo plans to install a mechanical lure track in the cheetah exhibit next year
 
The track would be cool. A great draw for the zoo to show off the cheetah's legendary speed.

An excellent idea! It is a huge success at the San Diego Zoo, so hopefully it will have equal success here.
 
Things are just getting worse between the zoo and PAWS over the elephants. Now PAWS is threatening legal action over that report the zoo made on the transfer and their continued worries about TB there in Septemeber. This isnt making the situation any better. PAWS is just ticked Toronto doesnt want to release our girls without being certain its the best option for them (unlike city council which just wanted to be rid of the expense of the girls and the activists). I cant say whether the zoo or PAWS is in the wrong but any idiot can see this fight isnt whats best for the girls. While I agree that Toronto might not be the best environment for our girls given our winters and exhibit we currently have, I think its time to pull the plug on this deal. Clearly they have reached an impass and its time to rethink things especially now that city council seems to be backing down a little. And the zoo definitely needs to end the bad press before things get any worse. All PAWS and the zoo have achieved in all their fighting is to make both facilities look terrible and failed to do what is truely in the girls best interest which is to get them out of Toronot before winter. End the deal now and and find them a wonderful new home in an AZA approved facility be it another zoo or the new elephant center in Florida. At least if we find them a nice new home this whole mess can be put behind us and we can look ahead to the future where hopefully city council wont be able to screw everything up (I know wishful thinking). The distraction of the pandas cant come soon enough.

Given that the elephants are "owned" by Toronto Zoo / Mun. I really do not see any legal precedent for PAWS entering into slapping a lawsuit on them. I find it increasingly ridiculous on their part and UNDERLINES that the major questions raised over husbandry, management and vet health at the PAWS elephant facility are at best deemed NOT STATE OF THE ART. Hence, pull the plug on any deal with them.

Why do the slap lawsuits: because that is what they - PAWS - are good at, entering into legal debates where there are no issues. I really do not think the interests of animal welfare are well served in a courtroom since most judges and attorneys and other legal people do not have ANY MEANING
FUL EXPERTISE on the subject of animal welfare, animal management and the like. Same goes for PAWS for that matter.

It really bugs me that they always seem to come on top of things because they just shout more than those that have a rationale / or even-handed treatment of the subject matter in hand.

Advice/Wish: sent the elephants at TZ to a AZA accredited facility with a plan to hold a non-breeding group of elephants for display and awareness purposes (something PAWS as an off exhibit site is also not good at, nor do they ever have any meaningful impact financially on in situ conservation activities).
 
Absolutely right Kifaru Bwana. This mess absolutly needs to be ended. I dont even care if the girls go to that sanctuary in Tennesse. Anywhere seems a better option at this point then PAWS and more drama. I can just see once they move to PAWS one or more of them will die under suspicious circumstances and suddenly it will be the zoos fault for sending them there. Well to be fair they die anywhere it will be considered the zoos fault. I cant stand the zoo's constant bashers. No matter what they do activists and the press seem bent on bashing them. It all makes me so sad for all those working at the zoo doing their best for all of the animals and their species survival.
 
In the new collection mag, they show a picture of the Panda Exhibit plans. If you look to the top left, you can see a part of the plans for another new exhibit which will have Sika Deer where the old Yak exhibit was.
 
Edited because I misread the question, haha! I have a map of the zoo upstairs I'll check and edit again in a moment.

Edit: There isn't anything right now aside from the pool as far as I can tell.
 
If one remember's back, sika deer lived in this same exhibit until the early 2000's (2002?)
