Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo Future Developments 2012

Never thought about what would go to the current ride area... excellent question. They were looking to do a zip line or tree top walking experience earlier in the year (check the business opportunities section back sometime in the spring I think). Perhaps that area is being considered for either of these attractions. I dont know if the zoo decided to go ahead with either thing though so could be any number of options.

I don't think there is enough space to put a zip line, and I don't think there are enough trees for a tree top walk. That's why I'm guessing that the zoo will put a smaller ride or attraction in that area. I wish the zoo would put an animal exhibit there, but I'm guessing that won't happen.

Your right about the space. I meant it might be a base for either thing or a staging area. But who knows what they will come up with as they continue to update and modernize the zoo. Could be land left alone for awhile until they come up with the funds for something. There was also an opportunity for a photo op profit sharing scheme. I lacked the interest in that business to read any farther than the title so that could be the replacement for the camel rides. Maybe move a zoomobile stop. Who knows but it is fun thinking of the possiblities.

Oops... that could have really wrecked our breeding plans unless they goofed on Ji Li too. The article says we will still get Er Shun, instead of Ji Li and a new male Da Mao. So that prompts a question for me... Why arent we getting Ji Li? Why Er Shun over Ji Li? I dont care what pandas we get so long as they arrive but Im an inquistitive person.

There could be a number of reasons, but highly possible ones are logistics or better genetic pairing (if breeding does end up happening).

Just a side note, this actually gave me a bit of deja vu back to when we received our "komodo dragon breeding pair" in 1997. While "Loka" (the female) and "Draco" (the "male") were supposed to make up the breeding pair, it was eventually discovered that "Draco" was actually "Draca"! This is what led us to having two females and then the acquisition of "Doni" (a confirmed male!) in 2001.

In one of the articles I read it said the new male is "age appropriate" for Er Shun. I'm not 100% sure what this means, but I think Er Shun is a better match for the new panda than Ji Li.

I was at the TZ today. I thought it might be busier with parents looking to keep their kids occupied, but no, it was super quiet.

I was more than a little disappointed with the penguin exhibit. I've seen it several times, but this was the first in the winter. They were not in their outside exhibit and instead in their indoor exhibit basically inside crates. I get that they are trying to breed/nest but having now seen several penguin exhibits in the US, the indoor exhibit highlights how truly terrible the TZ outdoor and indoor exhibit is. The indoor water looked dirty because of the greenish hue, the exhibit looked nothing like any of their natural habitats and basically is just a concrete building with a stagnate pool. So very disappointing.
