Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo Future Developments 2013

Adams7, the mouflon will be moved to the renovated oryx exhibit, which is close to the prezwalski horse exhibit.

If the yaks are moving to one of the drive through exhibits, what is going in the old yak exhibit. I know that on one of the plans someone posted on zoochat, sika deer were going where the yaks are. Is this still true or have the plans changed.
Also, is there still a plan for a pheasant aviary in Eurasia, or has it been cancelled? I really hope it hasn't because the zoo needs more bird species.

No idea about what would replace the yaks, but they are in the reindeer exhibit and have been the past summer. However, the pheasant aviary is apart of the Memorial Garden which will not be completely completed when Eurasia opens.

Question for everyone:

How do you feel about the way the Panda Exhibit is being treated, with the what appears to be limited entry and how the whole thing is fenced off. It seems way out of the zoo and it feels weird. What's your opinion?

It seems weird that you have to wait in line but its probably the most effective way to give everyone a fair chance at first. Crowd control will be important at first and with the arrival of a cub when everyone will want to be there and get a great look. Other zoos do something like it with their pandas. Might even have limited people around for the benefit of the pandas themselves. They might want to lock down the area during breeding to give them privacy and quiet to feel comfortable. The National Zoo closed the panda house last fall when their panda cub died until the mother was back back to herl old self. Likewise when a new cub is out on exhibit for the first time they can slowly introduce it to its adoring public, like they do at San Diego Zoo. We just have to get used to the wait. Getting to see a panda and possibly one day a cub will be well worth any wait or inconvience. Hopefully all that extra stuff will go when the Amur tigers return and we can enjoy full access to the whole zoo again and maybe see a return of the stingrays or some other cool seasonal exhibit.

The only thing I feel towards the zoo is that I believe they are targeting way to many people then they will actually see. To address the fenced off stuff, this is to control the abundance of people the zoo will see. Essentially a queue line that will lead into the orientation centre then into the exhibit. With that being said, one does not HAVE to wait in the line, if there is a busy day then yes one will but not on slower days, the queue will be opened up. Similar to queues at an amusement park. The queue will no longer be used after the pandas leave to access Eurasia.

Conservation Connection Centre

Does anyone know what the 'Conservation Connection Centre' is used for? I've never seen it open to the general public - save for during events.

It is primarily used for the zooschool classroom, and other zoo camp events throughout the summer, as well as another area where volunteers can go to do certain projects.

The zoo has also announced it will be changing the name of the Collections Magazine, and it was members to submit a name to help (see zoos website)

Thank you.

Was at the Zoo Saturday, here are the updates:

--There was some confusion of whether or not the African Otter was permanently off display. He is on display and his signage as returned.
--Baby Eyelash Vipers are on display in America's
--Panda construction continuing. I was able to see that a climbing structure has been built inside the outdoor exhibit.
--Nile Soft Shelled Turtle was off exhibit, exhibit was cleared out, looks like they are changing it up a bit

The Zoo announced today (via this Harlem Shake video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R2hHLYQM278&feature=player_embedded) that the giant pandas will be arriving in Toronto on March 25. They have a minimum 30 day quarantine + they need time to get settled in the exhibit, so I am guessing that the exhibit will be opening the May long weekend (or maybe the weekend before).

The Zoo also updated their panda section on the website and added a section on the black and white gala.

Fed Ex has also released a video about transporting the pandas from China to Canada:

Where are Er Shun and Da Mao being quarantined? At the animal health center or is the giant panda holding completed?

A rats I just found the articles and raced online to be first and you all beat me. So cool that they are almost here. Cant wait to see them in person.

Like Quartz92, I also think they will be quarntined in the health centre. Even if the panda holding is complete when they arrive, there is a lot of construction still taking place around the exhibit that would be disruptful as the pandas settle in.
