Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo Future Developments 2013

The current panda exhibit will probably be returned to amur tigers upon their departure. The indoor exhibits would work perfectly as a maternity type exhibit (year round!) and the outdoor exhibits look perfectly suitable. They also do very well in our climate.

I think the current plan for the orangutans is to not only revamp their indoor area and create an outdoor exhibit, but also to keep the current holding area. It was renovated quite nicely during the early 90's, and still holds up well.

I agree with this, there is a perfectly good wooded space that's right next to the orangs enclosure in the pavilion and the ramp walkway which makes the most sense for the orangs, plenty of space for a large, both vertically and land wise.

As for the panda/tiger enclosure it will likely remain the Siberian/Amur tigers once/if the panda's leave. Moving would not make much sense as they have more space in their current enclosure.

As for Americas/Canadian Wilderness, seeing as their doing a number of renovations in Americas it wouldn't make a lot of sense to do any sort of big change there. The Canadian Wilderness will be the first change we'll see after/if the pandas leave. With the pandas here attendance will rise and so will the zoo's profit (after you take out a huge chunk for bamboo) and there will be/should be a very large sum of cash for the Canada move.

Patience is all we can preach at the moment.

After reading about the new yaks that arrived at the zoo, it got me thinking. The old yak exhibit is now open again for the public to see. It is next to the panda area and currently has one reindeer in it. What are the plans for this exhibit when the new Eurasian Wilds area opens next year? Hopefully the zoo can acquire a new species to put in there.

Currently, they are on exhibit behind the drive through.

Ok after visiting the zoo I have a question about Australasia. Now I missed one section of it right after the aviary but it seems that the Komodo Dragon is about the only non Australian animal there. So why dont they work on moving them to Indomalaya thus freeing up their current home for well anything... but could be nice inside space for kangaroos and emus on a rotational basis. Or see if they can get some of the tasmanian devils the Australians are willing to part with. Oh or dingos. I'd like dingos. Ok Im not being realistic now but why dont they just move the dragons out and make it a strictly Australian pavilian? Theres that big pond area by the orangs which could be better used if they renovated the area. It would work and be a more realistic setting with realistic neighbours.

Although it may make more geographic sense (not by much, though) to have them in Indo-Malaya, there's probably just not enough reason to warrant spending so much money to create a new home for them across the zoo. Their current home serves them fairly well, and there are more pressing needs to spend money on.

Perhaps they will move them when they eventually redo the indo-malayan area eventually.
It was really just something that popped into my head so I thought I would ask.

Using "Wallace's Line" as the boundary between the zoogeographic regions, Komodo dragons are in the right pavilion! And besides the Komodo dragons, there are lots of other animals in the Australasia Pavilion that are not strictly Australian, including:

Matschie's tree kangaroo (New Guinea)
Victoria crowned pigeon (New Guinea and several Indonesian islands)
New Zealand shoveller (NZ)
Black tree monitor (Atu islands, off of New Guinea)
White-lipped python (New Guinea and surrounding islands)
(Emerald tree boa, but present for a different reason)
Prehensile-tailed skinks (Solomon islands)
Eyelash leaf frogs (Solomon islands)
Thorny devil (New Guinea)

Cool thanks for the correction Ungulate. I knew there were other animals that werent Australian it was just that the Komodo Dragons stuck out most to me.

Unglate do you have any other cool and interesting things you could share? I'm heading back to the zoo in two weeks with 6-11 year olds so anything you think they would find interesting or cool would be awesome.

Oh maybe you could also let us know what happened to last falls zebra foal Shakira since no one has seemed to spot her in a long time. Any idea? And since your our resident insider any babies arriving soon we all might be interested in? I love it when your on Ungulate and you can share your wealth of knowledge. Thanks again.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but that area of the zoo is called Australasia, as such it covers the tectonic plate of Oceania and allows for animals from the lower Asian Islands (New Guinea, Solomon islands etc.) to be exhibited.

The area is Australasia. Just with so many Asian sections in the zoo it could be streamlined. Eurasia is basically Asia. Indo-Malaya is Asian animals as well. The Komodo and some of the others would just look better in Indo-Malaya where the focus is more so on the rainforest creatures. Plus the islands they are on are in Indonesia so the move would make sense. With so many cool animals in Australia all the spaces in the pavilion that are taken up by non Australian/New Zeland/Papau New Guinea/ and islands to the east, its a shame more of them couldnt be displayed. Why not try and get some kiwis? Dingos? other species of kangaroo? I could go crazy and say Koalas or devils but I know thats really far fetched. I'd even be happy if the great barrier reef was ripped out and edge of the night returned or anything else put in. Not that the reef doesnt fit. It would be perfect if they had done a good job and put in a great aquarium instead of just slapping in some boring ones. Something more along the lines of the Lake Malawi Exhibit. Big floor to ceiling bright tanks with tons of fish. It would have been cooler too with one or two little shark species or rays. It would be awesome if a second building had been added to the zoo dedicated solely to the fish of the great barrier reef, rays, sharks, fish, even a sea turtle or two or reef area penguins which would be very rare.

This has led me to a question I have. Can anyone please tell me what animal goes outside the Australasian pavllion in the pen that runs behind the tree kangaroo and free flight aviary? I think I remember some type of crane lived there when I was a kid but I dont know now... not that I made an effort to look. Is anything in there?

Komodos evolved in Australia. Much more appropriate there than closer to Asia.

Oh cool I didnt know they evolved there. I thought they would have once been more wide spread throughout the Indonesian Islands and their rainforest habitat. Learn something new every day. Thanks for that little lesson.

I'll be headed back to the zoo Friday. Is there anything in particular I can try to find out about or take a photo of for people? My personal goal is got get photos of the lemur trio. And while at the penguin exhibit I'll make an effort to count chicks. And as we have all tried to do I'll see if I can find the zebra foal or ask a keeper if I find one nearby.

I was at the zoo on the weekend and there are now 5 lemur babies, with the last female giving birth to twins within the last 2 weeks. The older 3 are quite active and the younger 2 are still hanging on tight to mom. Hopefully you can time your visit right this time and they will be active.

From what I heard from a keeper, there are 5 penguin chicks- 1 from december who has been named Scooby and 4 from the second clutch, 1 who has been nicknamed Penelope (for the time being, as they are still unsure of gender). Penelope and Scooby spend some time on exhibit and some time in the house with 2 other chicks. The youngest chick is behind-the-scenes and is not visible to the public yet. At least 2 of last year's chicks have gone through their molt and now have the black and white plummage.

I don't think the zebra foal is around anymore. I haven't seen it on any of my recent trips.

If you take the zoomobile, there is a baby yak that is sometimes visible in the drive-thru paddock. It is not in the paddock that the zoomobile drives thru, but in a separate exhibit at the back of the yak exhibit (look along the chain link fence).

5 Lemurs well Im one happy camper. I will be so upset if I miss out on seeing them again. Thanks for the details. The short people I will be travelling with will be so excited to see every single baby possible.

Truly excellent news!! Thanks for sharing!

After a disappointing day at the Riverview Park and Zoo today I cant wait to go to Toronto tomorrow and recharge my zoo batteries.

Ok I dont really think I have much to report. By the time we drove all the way there through miserable construction delays we arrived with just over 4 hours to tour before be had to be back at the bus. Had to hit the zoo with tactical percision with 4 hot, whinny kids trying to hold me back. Ha, still saw most of the zoo despite them.

We took off as soon as we got in at nearly 11 am and booted it straight to the panda center. Skipped it yet again... no time for looking when your on a mission. The wait time was 30 minutes they claimed but the line was moving really fast and we were at the pandas in under 10 minutes. Pretty sweet when Da Mao is outside. We had no one really standing in our way once we got in to see Er Shun so we had good quality photo time. As we were heading out to see Da Mao I heard people saying he was coming in so I spun the kids around and they got to him up close and personal as he went after some apples right at the window. They were in heaven and frankly so was I since peoples rudeness and ignorance kind of impeded my fun the first time.

On to Australasia... I have a question about the victoria crowned pigeon, Crash. Is he missing a wing? I'll post and upclose pic I have of him but it appeared hes missing his right wing or most of the feathers on it. If so does anyone know what happened? I didnt notice it when I was last there but I wasnt as close to him and his left was turned a little more towards me. Saw a Komodo in the water. That was cool. Never seen them use the pool before. Im sure its common and heck it was boiling in that very crowded building. But still no wombats. That was a little disappointing but the kids didnt notice becauce none of them knew what a wombat was in the first place.

Tundra Trek was a bit disappointing. There were no arctic wolves or foxes to be had. But the bears were once again in fine form. As I was telling the kids about the bears a mother complimented me on my knowledge and thought I was a keeper... I was wearing a zoo hat and shirt from my last trip. Pretty funny but I owe a large amount of the credit to all of you so good job everyone. Inukshuk was paired with Aurora who is supposedly his best bud. Nikita was off in the other pen. They are trying to breed Nikita this year not so much Aurora. Hopefully she will be more successful as a mother than her sister. Maybe next fall Husdon will have a cousin or 3. Time wise I couldnt stay for the whole talk which sucks but at least I got that info. Oh Inukshuk apparently is rather small for an adult male. Hes about 9 ft tall and other males are 11-12ft tall. Good thing hes at the zoo where he wont have to fight bigger males to mate.

Skipped the Americas and Mayan temple. There was a lot of whinning about going on the zoomobile because at 1 hour in they were tired. Whimps. Happy to say more of the Przewalskis were on exhibit. I counted 6. They said up to 5 yaks may go on exhibit together but only one as visible... barely, just barely. Cant say I blame it. The sun was really pounding down but it wasnt hot, just warm. No calf yet again. Babies hated me today. Oh and they are going to try the Bactrians in with the Zoomobile later in the summer.

We continued on to the african stop. I vetoed the Canadian domain. No hyenas were out. Couldnt find the white lions nor could we afford wait the 15 minutes for the keeper. The penguins were just finishing their feedings so the crowds were light but no one was swimming. Saw all four bigger babies. No one with down anymore. Except maybe the youngest baby still in back.

Jake was out with one of the girls and he seemed excited at one point. Unfortunately one of the kids notice his enthusiasum so we had to keep moving because I didnt want to be forced to offer a lesson on the birds and the bees.

I actually saw a cheetah move. Thats big.

The baboons who I was concerned about with all that feminine swelling seemed fine. No one was swollen.

Saw Tony out in the rhino yard. Your tips about his horn size helped. His second horn was significantly larger than Tom who I saw last time.

Perky and Petal were out again.

But the whole warthog family were not.

And then to add insult to injury the lemurs were all balled up again. I missed 9 babies total today! So ticked off at my luck. Might go back in July so I will hit the lemurs first... well go their direction first I can wait on pandas.

Charles, Ngozi and Nassir were inside in the day room. The sign said there rotating the gorillas every 20 minutes for individual feeding. Outside there was no sign of Josephine, Johari or Sadiki.

In the orang exhibit Im a little unsure of who was out. There were 4 out. But Im guessing Jingga was out with Sekali because one of the babies was significantly smaller than the other baby. But last time Kembali didnt so much bigger than Jingga. Im wondering if it was Puppe and Budi out with them. Is Budi quite a bit bigger than Jingga?

Merriweather was out and visable but not looking so hot. Her fur was kinda wild looking.

Oh question about the babirusa. Im positive I didnt see Bucky, because a male is very distinctive. But I saw one outside and one inside. Have they seperated Olive and Muna. I mean they are rougly the same size now anyway. Or could it have anything to do with the limping I saw 2 weeks ago? Now if I hadnt gone to talk to the Rhino keeper first I could have asked them but i didnt.

And the rhino keepers I forced the kids to talk to with bribery of a sweet treat for a decent question, seemed less then knowlegdable. They didnt know where Vishnu was from or how long he had been there or anything about Asha. THey couldnt answer how old they were without checking with each other. Im not asking them to be a fountain of knowledge but one would expect they would know some of the very basics for their charges. I mean heck they must get asked these questions all the time. Maybe they were kind of new but then have them learn from a more knowledgable person. Worst keeper talk I have ever been to.

Then time was up... well shopping was a necessity but fun stuff was over. Oh and I never saw a peacock... weird.

Photos will come tomorrow.

The four orangutans that you saw were probably Sekali with her son Kembali, and Ramai with her daughter Jingga.

The size difference could have to do with age and gender, Jingga is the 2007 baby whilst Kembali and Budi were from 2006.

Ramai and Puppe are incompatible, and Sekali is very bonded to Ramai (as Ramai raised her)... so the social groupings are pretty well always the same.

The keepers are working on trying to get Budi, Jingga, and Kembali together for separate playdates, but the mothers are less than happy about the idea of their "babies" being separated from them.
