Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo Future Developments 2014

Stupid kid. Its actions like that which could convince the zoo not to reopen the walkabout. I hope the parents were furious with the child.

I dont know how often the zoo's red pandas are together but red panda pairs can often be kept together even during cub rearing. Depends on the male and females dynamics but they often can stay together. He takes no part in cub rearing. But they are peaceful. Other times zoos pull the male just prior to births and reintroduce him once the cubs mature. So its possible the zoo's could be together most of the time. However its also possible they have some other management strategy.

Interesting they moved the watusi before the barn is ready. Where would they keep them once the barn is torn down? It will be getting cold soon so leaving them out over night could be a bad idea. From what I hear the commentator was just making stuff up about them or is misinformed. It's an adult female, her male calf which was born after the zoo purchased her, and a sub adult female. There is no adult bull yet. But a calf and sub adult explains the small size you noted. More watusi are due to arrive in the spring or when the barn is ready.

Im the one who said male Przewalski Phoenix is castrated. Give me some time to double check.

I'm also a little surprised that the Watusi are already in the old giraffe house. People will only be able to see them for a little longer before they have to go inside for the winter, and I also thought there were going to be a lot of renovations done to the barn. Are the llamas still in the main exhibit? I saw them there yesterday.

Yeah, Llamas are still in the exhibit. The Watusi don't have access to the exhibit yet.

Thanks for the reply. I wouldn't be surprised if the llamas remain in the exhibit until spring since they can deal with cold weather.

I also went today and noticed a few more things,

1) there are 5 visible eggs at the ostrich exhibit, one of the females was really defensive and saw that one of the eggs appeared to have a crack in it.

2) only the male hyenas were out today (when i saw at least)

3) during the gorilla talk there was a little fight between Ngozi (with Nassir on her back) and Josephine, Charles broke that up right away. It was more vocal then physical even though the keeper said Ngozi got a good bite down on Jo

4) the cranes are back inside with the lemurs

5) we got to go inside the new snow leopard exhibit and they explained a few things to us, like how to water bowl is motion censored.

6) today members were supposed to be able to go into the cheetah house but unfortunately we weren't allowed because of breeding purposes.

I noticed the Ostrich eggs yesterday as well.

Also, all 3 Hyenas were out, at least in the early morning. Echo still seems wary of Pinduli.

Since I didn't have school today, I decided to visit the zoo with one of my friends. For the first time in over a year, I got to see the entire zoo in one day and it was amazing! I took tons of great pictures with my camera that my friend fixed that I will post either today or tomorrow.

Here are some things that I noticed:
- the 2 tree kangaroos were on exhibit together and it looked like the male was trying to mate with the female.
- there was one kookaburra in the free flight section in Australasia and one in its own exhibit. I don't know why they aren't together.
- I saw a blue grey tanager in the walk through section next to the alligator exhibit, so I think the birds that were replaced by the aracaris have moved there.
- I only saw 2 blue and gold macaws in the Mayan Temple, but I always thought there were more (including a green winged macaw).
- the Watusi were slightly visible from the walk to the Canadian Domain.
- at the penguin keeper talk I learned that there are some penguins behind the scenes sitting on eggs but they don't know if they are fertile or not.
- the gibbons were extremely vocal today and I could hear them all the way from the Indian rhino exhibit!
- a ring necked pheasant is now in one of the forest exhibits in the Kid's Zoo.

Funny, I went to the zoo today as well. I also went just about everywhere. We probably ran into each other without knowing it.

I saw only Harrington in the Tree Kangaroo exhibit. That was pretty much first thing in the morning. So Nokopo probably came out later.

I also noticed the missing Macaws. A Blue and Yellow Macaw and a Green Winged Macaw were missing.

The Watusi were also pretty vocal. You could hear them “mooing” at the Lions from the Giraffe house.

At the Cheetah talk the Keeper mentioned that they plan on having all 4 girls out at the same time. Right now they are in pairs. Cleo and Akeelah. I believe Tika and I think Mahala were off exhibit getting to know each other.

White Lions are remaining off exhibit to reduce stress while they try to mate Makali and Fintan. Keepers are optimistic in cubs this earlier on, but they know it’s a long shot since they’re still pretty young.

Learned that Lindy is more dominate over Jerroh despite Jerroh being bigger. Lindy definitely has more attitude.

I'm sure we walked by each other because I was also there for the Cheetah Keeper Talk. I forgot to mention the news about the female cheetahs so thanks for posting that.

I saw the tree kangaroos together at around 10:00-10:15 so it was pretty close to the zoo's opening.

I also heard the Watusi and they were extremely loud!

I hope the zoo is successful with breeding the white lions. It would be great to see lion cubs!

There's also hope for Cheetah breeding.

Also, I noticed that the front viewing for the Clouded Leopard is open. The only boarding is the side by the RatSnakes.

Glad you both had such nice visits.

One question. You said all four cheetah females would be together. There are 5 females. Akeelah, Cleo, Tika, Mahala and Emma. Well technically 6 with Jamoccha but shes still on end of life care in the health center. So are you sure its Mahala and maybe not Emma?

I'm not sure whether it's Mahala or Emma. That's the one thing I didn't get clarified. I'll try finding out during future visits.

Good for the zoo being able to get the donation. I don't exactly know what they are planning on doing with the software... other then it has something to do with education. Wonder what the board meeting next month will reveal about it because a donation that big is likely to be talked about. But any kind of $2 million donation will go to great use even if purpose isn't immediately clear. Just too bad it wasn't cash for the orangs.

Went to the zoo today. Figured I’d check out the Bird Barn showing.

The Bird Barn was interesting to see. They had 2 Abyssinian Ground Hornbill, a Turkey Vulture and 2 what looked like Ravens. I’m not too sure what they were exactly. Those were all indoors. Outside you were able to see a Bald Eagle and one of the Eagle Owls that’ll be going in Eurasia.

Clouded Leopard exhibit is now on full display with no boarded up windows. From what I understand the last boards were taken down today.

Thanks for the updates. I've seen the bird barn a few times from the outside but I haven't actually been in it.

Also the news about the clouded leopard exhibit being fully open is great. Hopefully I'll have better luck seeing them now.

Went to the zoo today. Worse thing about it was the group of school kids that happen to be everywhere I was. Had to tell them multiple time to stop cussing around little kids and parents. Parents were clearly uncomfortable, and didn’t want to say anything. Aside from that, here’s what I noticed.

Noticed a Heron living in the grassy Polar Bear yard. This is the third time I’ve seen it hanging out in that yard, with the Polar Bears resting in the same yard.

At the Cheetah talk, the Keeper mentioned that the girls are still rotating to breed with the males. Cleo is currently with 2 males, and everything seems to be going well between them. She also mentioned that Emma being a proven breeder has been pair with the same male as some of her litters, since they’re successful with each other. After breeding is done they are hoping to have all females in with each other on exhibit. Tika, Cleo, Akeelah, Emma, and Mahala. They all seem comfortable with each other, but having them altogether is still untested.

As it gets colder some animals have been taken off exhibit. Animals I noticed off exhibit are the Macaws, Hippos, Kudu and birds in their exhibit, and Warthogs (Norm included). If it warms up, some of these animals may be put back on exhibit, but if the weather continues to get colder the Giraffes, Rhinos, and Zebras will be taken off exhibit.

So today the celebration for Humphrey's birthday started, I didn't get to see it during my visit, but I did learn the Aurora is currently denning. She's showing all the signs of being pregnant, so the Keepers are really hoping to see cubs in the near future.

In other news, I managed to see both Beavers swimming in their exhibit.

Passage the Mayan Temple Ruins is closed off. Assuming it'll remain closed until spring.
