Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo Future Developments 2014

Well, it looks like the public WILL be able to look inside the health center. According to the zoo's webpage: "enable public viewing of care provided by our world renowned staff".

Here's the link: Wildlife Health Centre

Thanks for sharing this. I can't wait for the new health centre to open. I wonder if it will be built in the same location as the current one or someone closer to where the public goes.

That's pretty interesting.

I'm also wondering, where that facility will be built.
Question, the current facility is off limits area the zoomobile goes through right?
I was always checking my camera gear instead of listening to the dude on the mic.

THe current facilities are located behind tundra trek.

I wish they would have offered more info on the page. How better to get people excited and opening their wallets then giving them more of an idea what the new facility will look like and how it will be an improvement over the old facility. Brilliant idea though using Remy as their spokesanimal. Hes likely the best possible money maker they have right now... the little orphan who the health center had to rescue. I cant wait until the business section starts to post job contracts. Then we will get our first real look at what to expect. Cant wait.

The health centre is currently part of a large complex that also includes offices and all of the zoo's research facilities. I wonder if the new health centre will remain attached to the offices or will get its own building either in that area or somewhere completely different.

Hopefully when it is built, there will be public viewing into where they care for the babies in addition to where the surgeries happen. I know a lot of people would love to see babies like Remy being cared for the health care staff.

I would guess the zoo will build the most important facilities from scratch. Its not like they can afford to knock down anything until a new facility is complete or nearly so. They cant have the animals go without vet services, quarantine, ect. There is the space there to build the facility.

Your right they should have a nursery window! How to get donations? Put a box outside a window with cute babies who our funds to survive. Its cool how we will be able to watch medical procedures too but the babies would be so much cooler. Yes Im obsessed.

In other news... The zoos posted their member mag online now. Its at the bottom of the home page. Nice that they dont make you log in to see it. Theres a photo of Mstari, Remy and our new friend baby boy zebra.

Thanks for sharing the link! Great to see the zoo is going more online. Surely this will save them the money of mailing it.

Also great news about the babies and the health centre. Thanks to everyone for sharing the news.

Is it just me or is the zoo getting better at promoting itself? Pages for Remy and the baby gorilla, a new interactive winter map, more postings on facebook, the new material has good photos, releasing more postive information ect. It feels like the zoo is trying to improve its image and win over guests. I hope more good things will come.

It's definitely not just you! The TZ has really begun to step up its game. They even have the keepers tweeting. I think there are likely lots of reasons for this new love of technology and timely announcements. I for one am hopeful the competition from Ripley's will inspire them to even greater lengths.

Oh good I was afraid I was just being overly hopeful. The zoo could use the good press and frankily no one is just going to give it to them, they need to toot their own horn. After years of so much bashing and that rotten period of time where all the zoo did was release news on animal deaths, wrongly making it look like a death trap for animals, they need to rework their image. Wont be hard to do with such a successful year of big births and their finally embracing technology and good pr.

Here's yet another article about the good work the zoo is doing in conservation. A fish keeper from the zoo travelled to Madagascar to search for cichlids who were thought to be extinct in the wild. He along with others from Britain found a small population which are now being bred in an aquaculture facility. They have helped to save the species for another 100 years at least. They also found small populations of 3 other very endangered fish.

This is about the species for which ZSL London Zoo's Aquarium had 2 males on display, alas without any females to set up a conservation breeding program. I would hope that before long some adult females may end up at ZSL's Aquarium to set up an ex situ conservation breeding project. ZSL IS really doing a lot in terms of fish conservation both at home and in situ.

The great thing is the article said they are successfully breeding in their new home so with any luck they will get enough to start sending out some. 18 isnt a lot of animals but when it comes to fish who can lay hundreds of eggs it could equal a lot of fish soon. Without predators, probably seperated from their parents who might eat them, getting plenty of food and space, they should hopefully will have the best shot at survival. Its great what has been done here.

I was bored this evening and went back to the original posts from when the canadian forum first opened on the site. For anyone interested in learning about the history or who wants to see photos of the zoo from way back should check them out too. Its all really interesting to read and some of the photos are amazing to look back at.

Tomorrow is a very exciting day for me because I finally get to have my volunteer interview at the zoo! While I'm there, I plan on trying to get some pictures of the new gorilla baby. Also the zoo posted on their Facebook that tomorrow they'll be doing a special octopus enrichment which I would like to go to. If there's anything else I should check out, tell me.

The score is 0 for 1. Asha hasnt been pregnant since the still birth of her male calf several years ago. Unless shes currently pregnant and the zoo isnt saying anything until the calf is born and made it a couple of days. They are more likely to be guarded with that info after the first time. Its been more than 2 years since the stillbirth so a calf could be on the way, even due sometime soon but I really dont think we will know until after the birth.

Here are some updates from today's visit to the zoo:

- the lake Malawi tank has reopened. Fish are slowly being reintroduced.
- a second white blotched stingray has been added.
- new signage has been created for all of the new species in the Americas marine tanks.
- there were two wombats on exhibit. One (I think it was Arthur) was in with the wallabies. The other was separated in the smaller part of the exhibit.

Also I got to see the baby gorilla but I didn't get any good pictures.

Hey, I was at the zoo today as well. Went mainly because I was itching to take some pictures.

Maybe we passed each other! I bet you got much better photos than me. I don't know if I have any pictures worth posting today.
