Oh, maybe I misunderstood you. Planting it around wouldnt hurt but can cut bamboo be replanted? I am far from a plant expert... or even gardner.

From what I understand cut bamboo can't be properly planted to regrow, much less continue to survive. The plants need to be replanted from the root, meaning the bamboo root needs to be intact to regrow it.

I believe the bamboo we receive comes with no roots intact. That's because the supplier needs the root to grow their crop.

And now I have learned something new about bamboo. I was just happy it was being eaten and not going to waste that way.

Yeah, I never realized they can feed the unwanted bamboo to other animals. Never really thought what would happen to the leftovers.

Well they probably dont feed the other animals chewed on bamboo or anything questionable. But they get some nice free browse for the others. I say free because you have to feed the pandas anyway and if they didnt reuse it for the others it would just be composted. Its already paid for under the budget of another animal so its free to say the rhinos.

That makes a lot more sense and I'm glad the leftover browse doesn't go to waste! Thanks cyoher and TZFan!

There is now some kind of penguin encounter. Its on the keepers twitter but no details are included. Looks like they bring a penguin out of the exhibit to visit with guests. Something for you regular visitors too keep an eye out for.

I was used as a test dummy for this encounter. On my Zookeeper for a Day, the keepers brought out some of the penguins for me to touch and play with to see if they would behave well around people. I guess they thought it was a success. I know I had a great time doing it and I'm sure many others will too!

That's pretty cool. So you actually got to pet the penguins? Not sure how well the penguins would take being bombarded by large crowds of people. Then again, I'm sure the Keepers will keep everything in check. They'd be the ones that can read how well the Penguins are adjusting to the situation.

Right you did mention that. Im slipping. What exactly did you have to do with them? Might get more of an idea from you.

The keepers brought me into a small room in the penguin house and brought in two of last year's babies. At first they had to get comfortable enough to let me touch them and once they got used to me, it looked like they were having a great time. In addition to petting them, the keepers brought out pelican feathers, which they liked to play with.

I'm not sure how they would do with large crowds, but I was in a small room with me, three keepers and the two penguins and they seemed fine. Things might be different when it's less keepers and more people they've never seen before.

Interesting you were training them for touching. That would be awesome! I would love to pet a penguin. I remember one of them bit you. I would even take that. Great story to have. The time I got bit by a penguin.

Ya I could see them thinking the wiggling things on the end of our hands are yummy little fishies. I would still rather get bitten by one of them then the goose who bit me as a kid. At least penguins are cute.

Yeah, those goose are nothing but territorially jerks. I saw them bullying the flamingos during one of my last visits.
