Despite the abundant amount of snow, I decided to take a trip to the zoo. My brother and I only ran into 1 other person that wasn’t a Keeper. So needless to say, it was a quiet day.

LOL I think starting December 15th you also will see two twin sisters walking ( Lol Us, Megakillerwhales) since we will be at the zoo every day until January 4th lol here, and we can be pretty loud especially when we are by Hyenas ( our favorite animal ) LOL

The Giraffe House was officially opened today. The press release mentions graphics and interpretives in the viewing area, including life-sized replicas of the neck vertebrae, but no pictures are included.

In other news, the zoo is running a 12 days of Christmas countdown on their Facebook page, with discounts, prizes, videos, and special announcements. The giveaways seem to be quite popular with thousands of people liking/sharing the posts.

Found an article that says antelope and ostriches are joining the giraffes. Boy I hope this article is right.

Nice article. Interesting to hear about Ostriches being added to the exhibit. We already knew about the antelope, as that can be the Eland. Either way, I'm liking this news.

I'm also guessing moving the Ostriches would free up room for the Wildebeest that there were talks about. If I remember correctly, the plan was 3 Wildebeest that would go in either Norm's (Warthog) exhibit or with the Ostriches. The plan was still being discussed at time.

That was exactly what I was thinking Cypher. The ostrich barn is too small. Unless construction happened I couldnt see it housing 3 ostriches, a warthog, possibly a male zebra and then adding 3 wildebeests plus young. It would make much more sense to move the ostriches in with the giraffes. They could go with the zebras but their house might be a little full with the 3 sable antelopes, and potentially 5 zebras (Jake, Tori, eventually the calgary female and then foals for each mare). The kudu exhibit would be another option but it may be too hilly for ostriches. The giraffe exhibit probably is the best option plus. Tons of room inside and out plus exhibit mates which always get along. Most zoos have giraffes and ostriches together, often with eland. We will just have to wait and see what happens but Im excited about that possibility.

I'll try seeing if I can find out more information during future visits. Having Wildebeest would be pretty nice.

My only concern is access to seeing them. Most people that don't plan on heading down to the Canadian Domain won't venture into that area without having to. And the viewing shack in usually overlooked and pretty confined. I'm wondering if anything will be done about that, although they don't have much options.

I really hope this news is true. Seeing the giraffes, ostriches and eland together would be amazing and if moving the ostriches makes room for wildebeest, I'll be even happier.

I read through every article I could find on the giraffe house opening and its the only one that specifically mentions the ostriches and antelope. We all know about the eland. The ostriches would be a great change that makes a ton of sense. The article also was the only one to mention a new male arriving in the spring and females to follow later on. It also had more details. I think the author decided not to just go with the press release and asked some questions. Fingers crossed that its good journalism and not false hope.

Sorry, I may have missed the part about the Eland. Whats going on with them? I had no idea the zoo had any.

They dont have the eland yet. A herd is supposed to arrive in the spring.

Went to the zoo today. Figured I visit a couple more time before year-end. Anyways, here’s what I noticed.

Marsupials in the Australasia Pavilion has access to the outdoors. Somewhat surprising.

Aurora is still a no show in the Polar Bear exhibit. A Keeper said everyone is waiting for something to happen, as she’s still denning.

In the Americas Pavilion the Giant Centipede is back on display next to the Giant Bird-Eating Spider.

3 Penguin chick are now on display.

White Rhinoceros Tony was out, which was a bit of a surprise.

In the African Pavilion the fish section with Freshwater Puffer is covered from the public. Large tarps cover the fish tanks. I’m assuming its maintenance.
