Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo History and Past #2

Interesting, I also wonder where they were located? Maybe along the monorail route?

I don't know if the black bears were ever formally "exhibited" at the zoo; I believe they came in as cubs and left as cubs. For a short time, black bear cubs (not sure if they're the ones in the article) were house din what is now the raccoon exhibit.

Going back a few messages, the bareness of the gibbon exhibit is due to the fact that there were not just gibbons in there - also Malayan tapirs and Sarus cranes

1988 Koala visit:

I didn't get to see them then, my family used to only go once a year and I think that year we went in April/May.

What a great clip Meaghan!
In 1988, the visiting koalas were housed in the "Village Edge" pavilion (now Malayan Woods); their exhibit was basically where the clouded leopard exhibit is now. I seem to recall that it was painted light blue ...

Thanks for the head's up! I do remember bits and pieces of the Village Edge, I swear I remember seeing a owl butterfly perched on a bench.

I remember snakes and some exotic birds, unless they were in Indonesia. Malayan Woods was reopened in 1993. I remember how close the Clouded Leopards came, right up to the glass :)

Cool. Love it when some animals you don't normally see so close come up to the glass/fence. Last friday, the Bison in the domain were right up close to the fence. Closest I have ever seen them in 22 years haha.

I love that too! I have never seen the Prehensile Tailed Porcupines anywhere near as I did since they've been moved to their new exhibit.

The new Porcupine exhibit is amazing! They are very active! It was cool on Friday with the Bison I must agree. Any close encounters are neat!

You went on Friday too, Quartz?

Did you see the construction they were doing in the old Wisent Exhibit down in Eurasia? Saw some of those "blue rocks" ala the Polar Bear Exhibit being built. I heard somewhere that the Wisent Exhibit may turn into the new Grizzly Bear Exhibit.

Any pictures of your trip on friday everyone??:)

I'm going next week (i think) but would love to see some pics of everything this year:), any changes that are noticeable?

Zack

If it's the new bear enclosure they're, building, they are getting to work on the new Canadian area early then :) I didn't think they'd be working on that until after Eurasia, unless they're doing both at once.

I'm not sure. Maybe since the Wisent exhibit is across the pond and away from the public, they are just getting it out of the way construction wise. I do know for a fact that those rocks were not in the Wisent exhibit before so something is being newly built there.

I was there, I did notice the construction, the rocks that you are talking about were already there they have always surrounded the trees.

The zoo I think will not start construction there until detailed designs are done by the end of this year. I do think it will be later because they have Africa and the garden to finish. The penguins are also supposed to start soon.

The Grizzly Bear exhibit will be going where the old Wisest exhibit is.

I am not sure what they are doing there now but they are drilling for something, they may be putting in new pipelines or anything, but I do not think there is much relation to the Canadian Wilderness.

Cool. Sorry, the rocks that were there looked newer. And coupled with the fact that construction equipment was there, I must have read into it more.

Where are the Penguins coming from?

I am not sure if we have any penguins acquired yet, they are still designing the exhibit and if we are lucky the exhibit construction will start this year!
