Yeah, I know. But I don't think he was an elephant zookeeper in 1974. ;-) And this website (which I believe gets it's information from the Elephant studbook) contradicts him. I wasn't saying that he was wrong, just pointing out that there's a differing opinion out there, from another 'expert source' (which in this case could be "more" expert, depending on if he has his information based on word of mouth, or from reading the zoo records).

According to that website Tara arrived 1974-07-30 which would be July 30, 1974. The zoo opened on August 15, 1974 which means she was infact at the zoo 1 month prior to opening.

I have also just found out that there is an elephant from the Toronto Blood-line that is not housed at the TZ. Jo (Juanita) was housed at the TZ originally and eventually sent out to Columbus. I wonder has she had any offspring?

Hmm... so July is the 7th month now is it? When did THAT happen?

Gee, you think I'd know that, being that my birthday's in July and so I constantly write that on forms and stuff... yeah, I'm an idiot. I'll just crawl back into my lurky shadows and try to quietly finish my website...

haha, Maelwys everyone makes mistakes. I was just thinking I hope I wasn`t the idiot who would try to correct you and then you tell me the seventh month is August!

Yes Quartz, there is another toronto bloodline outside out Toronto

Juanita (She is sually known as Jo) was tranferred from Toronto Zoo in 1984 and lived in man different facilities (including a circus) before arriving at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo in 1997 with another female named Moshi

All three of Cleveland's elephants were moved to Columbus Zoo in Fall 2008due to construction of there new home "African Elephant Crossing"

They are due to return to Cleveland shortly before the opening of African Elephant Crossing in 2011

And as for calves, she has never had any and it is unlikely she will ever have one due to her age (43)

Teeheehee @ Maelwys!

Juanita/Jo/JoJo and Tumpe were the only two elephants to leave the Toronto herd. Jo arrived with Patsy and Iringa, and she bears some resemblance to Iringa, so they may be related. She has never had a calf.

Chinese leopards: yes, they did breed at Toronto! At least ten cubs were born in several different litters - the last birth was in 1987.

We had proghorns? I agree with you to Meaghan, well with time those plans which are currently drawn on paper will become life size! With that is is possible to see such species again.

And wow those pics really stand out maybe its because everything is so.....new!

Yep. This is true :)

The newness of the pictures really shocked me, too! I must say, the America's pavilion's bird of prey enclosure/beaver area looks better now with grown in vegetation.

Awesome findings, Meaghan!
Re Americas: you'll notice that behind the eagle (where the otters and beavers are now) there are four separate enclosures (instead of the current two). The otters used to be in the very far enclosure (where the beaver lodge is currently) and had an indoor exhibit/holding where the native marsh exhibit is now. The rest of the exhibits held a variety of waterfowl (including swans and wood ducks) ... I don't remember beavers, but it appears they may have been exhibited too.

Happy Birthday Toronto Zoo!!!!!!!

Great pictures Meaghan, great blasts from the past

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TORONTO ZOO!!!!! I think it looks better now to!

Good finds Meaghan!

I wonder If maybe the yak also are a phase out species?

Heres just a bit of trivia,

At one point, the yaks lived in the off exhibit camel exhibit which was on view

The scimitar horned oryx lived in the current yak exhibit but were moved when the new yard and barn (the current one) was built for them

The yaks moved into the old oryx habitat and that is how they got that exhibit (They used to to share it with elds deer or sika deer, maybe both)

I think the yaks are being phased out to. I wonder if all these animals (I mean ones from years ago) left the zoo in hopes of possibly returning once constructions finishes on the older regions of the zoo?

And great pics Meaghan! Again way to go!
