Awesome, where will they be stayign until construction is finished

I think most construction is done Zoogoer, I will confirm maybe a little later this week cause I may be going to the zoo!

Excellent News!

Its possible, but I don't know if the building can hold polar bears, well if they can hold a gorilla I guess why not?

The zoo could have just rushed the holding yard as it is mainly chain link fence to hold Inukshuk, but they would have to have another yard done to hold Nikita and Aroura.

Thanks for the info! Ungulate when is moving day, for the rest of the animals? Do you know how the zoo plans on moving the wolves, probably by crating them? I don't know why but I get realy into the transportation of animals!

Good question. I was also curious as to when and how they will move the wolves. I would guess they would move them a week or so before the opening date to get them used to their exhibit and so on. I am totally looking forward to the members only nights. I'll be there both nights, probably.

Im going both nights, I know the reindeer will be walked over, the outreach reindeer only not the herd. The herd will be moved in the fall.

I don't know when the rest of the animals are moving, but they will probably wait until all of the heavy machinery is gone. The wolves will probably be sedated when they are moved - it will give the vets a chance to give them a thorough exam. Crate training such skittish animals would take a LONG time.

Inukshuk the polar bear has arrived ... and is being temporarily (?) housed in the quarantine unit as there were some last-minute problems with the bear holding. The arrival of the two females has been postponed until everything is ship-shape.

I was just wondering if there has been any recent news on aquiring animals.
What is the status on the two female white rhinos from South Africa?
Is there a date for the polar bear girls to arrive?
Any new animals arrive this year? (What happened to the Babirusa?)

Any recent animal deaths or departures?

Well, isn't Inukshuk the male? and they are suppose to breed. I don't know if Inukshuk is a male or a female, sorry. But I believe there are planning to breed, because there is a maternity yard built and where is the tapir from Bronx? a mate for Tanuk.

Inuksuk is a male and Nakita and Aurora are female. Inuksuk is at the zoo already. There is hope for them to breed because all three bears are from the wild. I can say that I don't think both sister's will stay at the zoo for more then 2 years if the SSP steps in. The mate for Tanuk is not going to arrive the zoo figures they don't have enough space to house a second tapir nor an offspring.

That's a pity about the Tanuk, I was really hoping for a mate and a baby. :( The tapir enclosure really needs to be renovated to hold three or more tapirs. :(

That's a shame. :( I was really hoping Tanuck would be getting a mate. After all the other projects at the zoo are completed, the tapir/indian rhino house and exhibits should be next on the list. The tapir exhibit is too small and just looks liked it was rushed when it was first made.

The zoo has some more ambitious plans instead of the Indian Rhino Pavilion. Here is the list of the zoos plans.
North Zoo Redevelopment Project:
-Phase One: Tundra Trek. (Polar Bear, Reindeer, Arctic Wolf, Snowy owl, Wolverine and Arctic Fox)This project is scheduled to open on August 1, 2009. With a new state of the art Polar bear exhibit and information to help the public better understand the effects of climate change.
-Phase Two: Eurasia (Panda Bears & Golden Monkeys were thought about in the Eurasian plan)To begin in 2010/2011.
-Phase Three: Mixed Wood/Boreal Forests (Moose, Wood Bison, Grizzly Bears, Vancouver Island Marmots)To begin in 2011/2012.
-Phase Four: Tropical Americas (The conversion of the Americas Pavilion to Tropical Americas)To begin in 2014/2015.
-Dr. Scholfield Memorial/Asian Gardens: to be started in late 2009, early 2010.
-Toronto Zoo is currently (Feb 2008) starting the initial design phases for an expanded elephant complex, including a large indoor space where the herd can be together and on display year-round, and an expanded outdoor paddock. To begin in 2015. There is going to be a feasibility study to determine whether it would be worth the money to expand the elephant habitat and quadruple the space of the current exhibit, according to an elephant keeper.
-The South Side of the African Pavilion is to be renovated in winter 2009/2010.
-Giraffe House Refurbishment to begin in 2010
-Animal Health Centre to begin in 2012
-Education centre to begin in 2014/2015
-Orangutan Complex to begin in 2013/2014
-Penguin Exhibit to begin in 2014 to 2018

Not sure if this has been mentioned here yet or not, but the two snow leopard cubs from the 2007 litter will be going soon. One is going to Edmonton, Alberta and the other was supposed to go to Australia. The Australia plan has been scrapped though so I'm not sure where that one is going now. One of the current cubs will be going to Australia though once it is old enough.

To be honest with you, I didn't even know they still had the two snow leopard cubs from the 2007 litter until a zookeeper told me just the other day.

A lot to be done. It seems in most of my time the zoo's been busy with a lot of construction/refurbishments. The south side of the Africa Pavillion is the area where the mandrills are right? And would the river hippos have to be moved if the elephant exhibit was expanded?
