I was just doing a little bit of checking on Philadelphia Zoo's website, and it appears that our adolesent female snow leopard "Maya" (from Tiga and Kota's 2007 litter) is now at Philadelphia Zoo (As of December 9, 2009)
 
Yes that is correct she left our zoo very early in December. I think it was the 8th?
 
Yes, that sounds plausible :)

They have two males there (Amga and Gala) so she could have cubs there within the next few years
 
Just like to post that our Fishing Eagle died as well as a zebra, name starts with a "S"? Woozle (hyena) is doing well with the treatment!
 
The zebra is most likely Sudi, as I think she was older

Was the Fishing eagle slated to be exhibited in the revamped fur seal exhibit?
 
No it is not Sudi, I am sure it was a longer name.

Yes, the zoo does plan on putting an aviary beside the seal exhibit, the fish eagle that died was not slated to go there. She was a retired zoo animal.

I also have to say (just remembered) Bitsiki (polar bear) in Cochrane was put down.
 
Aw, I'm sorry to hear about the ones that have left us :(

I am glad to hear how Woozle doing. Being as he is an older animal I was especially concerned about how he was doing (I'm guessing it's a benign tumor).
 
No I am sure it is longer, it is possible Shani is a short form for her actually name. There is also 1.1 Capybara coming in March.
 
Yes, Bisitek had been on the decline for quite awhile :(

The zebra your probably thinking of was Blue Jay, the first grevy's zebra ever born at TZ in 1977 (The day the Toronto Blue Jays played there first game :) )
 
No, the zebras name started with an S I am 100% sure of it.
 
R.I.P Tonghua :(

I was hoping Tatiana and Tonghua would breed again this year (They were atleast planned to breed) so does anyone know if they had been put together yet (Maybe Tatiana could be pregnant by now?)

Just a little more background on Tonghua, he ended up attacking/killing his first mate (Baba) and was first put together with Tatiana in 2000 (She was pregnant by the end of the week :P )

Tatiana had a single, premature cub later that spring... and when she went to bite the umbelical cord, she ended up biting off its leg (It was later euthanized)

She was put together with Tonghua again in 2001, and she had two cubs later that spring (Toma and Bachuta)

She and Tonghua didn't breed for several years after that (Any one know why this hiatus beetween litters occured) but then Tatiana (Tatiana was born at Calgary Zoo in 1996) had Coco and Jack in 2007
 
It was recommended by the SSP to breed Tatiana again. However, the zookeepers at the Toronto Zoo went against the wishes of the SSP and for good reason. She was having a hard time walking, lots of pain in her hips and so on. The Toronto Zoo brought in a Specialist 4-5 months ago and did some x-rays and other tests on her. They ended up doing a surgery to cut the nerves that go to her hips, from my understanding. That way she would be less likely to feel pain and be more comfortable.
 
Very smart move, Toronto Zoo! I noticed that in my past visits that she had been walking around more, as opposed to her just wanting to lie down all the time.
 
There was also some talk about putting her on some experimental anti-inflammatory meds which they honestly had no idea whether they would work for a tiger or not. However, I don't know whether they started that or if the surgery was enough.

But absolutely, I'm also happy with the Toronto Zoo's decision which is for the best of Tatiana.

Catching up on all of the threads that I've been neglectful in reading!

The zebra that died in January was Keshia (sorry Quartz! doesn't begin with S); she was 29 years old and had been diagnosed with a metabolic disease.

I believe the hiatus in breeding the Amur tigers was because of the SSP; Tonghua was very high ranking (his mother was wild-caught), but Tatiana was not a very good match (high mean kinship with the population). As the other tigers in the population reproduced, Tatiana's "stock" rose and so we got the green light for Jack and Coco. They had not been put together for breeding yet this year, but Tatiana's leg problems turned out to be hip dysplasia, a potentially genetic disorder which would make breeding her unfavourable. (Hip dysplasia is common in some dog breeds)

And some exciting (if far-away) news: we have finally gotten another recommendation from the babirusa SSP, and if things go according to plan they should be arriving some time next year.
 
OO well I was close there was an S in it!

I am so very happy that the Babirusa are coming, I know one is from the Bronx and one is supposed to arrive in March?
