Does anyone know the age of the new additions?

Also has anyone heard if any new animals for the African rainforest pavilion have been secured yet and in quarintine?
 
about the 2 new emus that are in the walkabout: I know from speaking to the keeper in there on an earlier visit that the two previous ones were old and off exhibit and enjoying retirement somewhere behind the scenes at the zoo. It sounded like they might have arthritis or something...

The 2 new fellows were in quarantine at the time (start of summer) but were out and about when I went back at the end of the summer. The new guys seem little more agressive/curious as they were walking and hanging out on the walkabout path.
 
I was there one day a couple of months ago and the walkabout was closed because one of the new emus was sitting infront of the gate and not budging. The keepers were trying to get him/her to move with food but it was no use. lol.
 
Just got my Collections Magazine and it has a section that is dedicated to the new species and exhibits that will be in the New Renovated African Pavillion, They are as follow:

Fully New Exhibits for:
Mandrill, Red River Hog, Pygmy Hippo, Sacred Ibis, Meerkat, Nile Monitor, Veiled Chameleon, and ABA ABA fish

New Species:
--Royal Python- Large exhibit that will have 1 male and five females within it at all times
--Gaboon Viper- Seems there will only be one, probably the one confiscated from the Toronto Apartment that was running loose this January and the zoo adopted it
--Jackson's Chameleon
-- Veiled Chameleon Nursery- "Come and Watch our Baby Chameleons growing and changing"
--Madagascar Fishes- "Several species"

Also:
Nile Soft Shelled Turtle will be on exhibit full time, not behind the scenes as per usual
According to another source, a shorebird exhibit that will include Egyptian Geese, African Spoonbill, Touraco etc.

Also, the Magazine says that the zoo has officially aquired 5 South African Blackfoot Penguins and they are at the zoo behind the scenes currently. The new exhibit will have temperate pools and a year round holding room for them to be on exhibit in the colder months.
 
That sounds awesome:) Can't wait to see the new side of the pavillion once it is finally opened. Any dates been set for that yet??

Also if we have penguins already when is the exhibit expected to have work done to it? IS rosie even gone yet?
 
I think the African Black Footed Penguins are from the Erie Zoo. I read it in their summer newsletter and didn't even realize they'd be a new addition to Toronto's Zoo as I forgot they don't have any on display.
 
It says the exhibit will be open in 2011. I've heard the exhibit will be similar, just with a new indoor holding that is accessible to the public.

And yes, Rosi is gone now. She was moved to the Louisville Zoo in July of this year after 24 years at the zoo.
 
Okay awesome:).....with the amount of money they are putting into the exhibit i sure hope it looks better than what it did with the seals in it:)......i'd love to see a big population of penguins in there, especially with the underwater viewing.

I'm super excited for penguins!!

I just don't understand why the Zoo isn't advertising it to non-members. I checked the website and there is nothing to tell of the new exhibit coming.
 
Just thought i'd let everyone know that our female sumatran tiger "cubs" Kali and Indah have both departed for zoo's in Japan!

Also, we are due to recieve a new male sumatran tiger (born in 2008 at SDWAP) named Harimau Kayu, he will be paired for breeding with our current female Brytne
 
Great news indeed! I saw the transport cages set up in the enclosure to get them acclimatized to them, I imagine.

He is one very handsome fellow!

Any idea which Japanese zoos received Sumatrans from Toronto?
