Toronto Zoo New Animals, Departures and Deaths #2

Thought I'd start a new thread as the old one's getting a bit big. Continue, dears :)
 
As from my understanding the lions are all to be phased out before they bring in a new group, the plan for that is because they want breeding to occur. However, plans change all the time.
 
Also forgot to add that a new zebra, Jake who is 4 years old is on display where Shaka is normally, Shaka has been moved to the Savanna Paddock to breed.
 
My guess is that after Shani has her next foal with Shaka, Jake will become her new mate, as that will be Shaka and Shani's 4th foal together and it will most likely be time to switch things up a bit to add some genetic diversity

The younger boys are neutered, correct? So would it be possible to introduce new lions after Rowdy's eventual passing?

I was so sad to hear about Nokanda's passing. She was one of my favourites.
 
@Zoogoer I agree with you some more genes as Shaka is well represented.

@tiada, one of the boys is the other is not (to my knowledge, I may be wrong), which means a female could be brought in, but it is planned to phase out the existing group first.
 
I think both are castrated, but Lindy grew somewhat of a mane

Does anybody have any history about the Sumatran tigers?

ISIS list Toronto as holding 0:1 which I think is Brytne?

I am looking for the following information-

Does anybody know the exact date of Brytne, Indah and Kali's birthdate?
What happened to Rengat?
Which zoo's in Japan now have Indah and Kali?
I read previously Harimau Kayu (born 13/12/10 at SDSP) was due to arrive at Toronto?

Thankyou if you can answer my questions.

I would think this is Brytne, and they just haven't updated Harimau Kayu into the info, as he is at T.O. now and there is no news of Brytne passing away or being moved

Indah and Kali (Which was Brytne's second litter) were born (I think) on July 6, 2006. I'm not quite sure what zoo's they have been shipped to, but they are at different zoos in Japan from each other. Brytne was born sometime in 1998 at the Memphis Zoo

Rengat passed away last year, he was quite elderly and was ill for awhile
 
the Toronto Star is reporting that polar bear Aurora gave birth to three premature cubs and that she killed one of them. Here's hoping the other two survive.
 
So sad to hear that one of them was killed. I also hope the other two survive!
 
This is sad news but I am confident that the Toronto Zoo staff will do everything possible to take care of the two surviving cubs. I am hoping all goes well.

I am assuming that both female polar bears were pregnant at some point because it was only a number of months ago that the other female had rejected and killed her cubs as well. It's unfortunate that both litters had been rejected by their mothers. That male is quite prolific at getting both females pregnant.
 
As sad as it is to hear about the cub being killed, born premature and everything, it is amazing news to hear that the zoo is having so much success, with getting the bears pregnant, hopefully the cubs will survive and then can be on show for a while, i would imagine two polar bear cubs come winter time would be great for park attendance, and would help with some extra money for the eurasia area!
 
I dont think it was ever confirmed that Nikita (the first of the two polar bear females to give birth, earlier this year) attacking her cubs was the cause of death, but who knows

The connection i've realized is that Inukshuk (our male polar bear, and the father of these cubs) has had litters with atleast 2 (maybe even all the females if Nikita did indeed attack and kill her cubs) female polar bears that have attacked and killed their litter (The first instance was at St Felicien, where the mother of the cubs "Aisaqvak" attacked, killed and ATE her cubs)

Aisaqvak and Inukshuk bred again, and she very successfully raised her second litter, and I'm sure our male does not carry an "eat your baby" syndrome or anything of the sort, just a strange coincidence. I'm even sure that if Aurora was again given the chance to breed, she may be a better mother that time around
 
Should we assume no news is good news and the third cub is still alive and hopefully doing well?
