Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo New Animals, Departures and Deaths 2012

A sumatran tiger (I'm guessing a new female) will be arriving/has arrived from the Fort Worth Zoo in Texas. By the sounds of where I found this info, it looks as if this was a LA Zoo born animal
 
A new tiger is good news. Hope things go better this time and we get some cubs to join the pandas as the big draws next year. Do we know what her name is? How old she is? Has she had cubs before? So exciting to have a new member to the zoos family.

Are you sure you don't mean Fort Wayne in Indiana? They have a female of breeding age who started life in Los Angeles... She's called Kemala if that helps

Sure Fort Worth don't keep Sumatrans anymore?? :confused:

Reading that, I think it's a typo. Names are similar enough for them to be confused and the only reason that the transfer would be noted in Los Angeles is if it concerned an Tiger of there ownership (and Kemala does falls under that catagory)

The lady in question was born at LA Zoo on 3rd June 2007 and moved to Fort Wayne in May 2009. Has been with a male there, but has yet to breed (possibly why a transfer to Toronto has been suggested)

Your absolutley right it could be a typo or mistake. We'll probably just have to wait until someone has a chance to talk to a keeper to figure it out for sure. I'm just happy Harimau Kayu is being given a second chance to become a father. For both tigers sake I hope all goes well. I'd hate to see another tiger die and at two deaths i doubt we would risk a third tiger on Hairmau Kayu so we would be stuck without cubs for 15+ years while we wait him out or get San Diego to take him back. Hopefully a little time to mature will help him be more sucessful with our new girl.
 
I wasn't 100% positive on the information I had heard and was waiting to see if the Zoo would release any information about the deaths. But since they haven't, I was able to confirm some of the deaths during my visit today.

The most shocking death would be Stripes, the male Masai giraffe, who died at the end of September. Other notable deaths in recent months include: a penguin, a cheetah, and an older female baboon. A still unconfirmed death is the baby pygmy hippo, but I don't think anyone at the zoo is going to talk publicly about it.

Shaka (Grevy's Zebra) was not on exhibit today. Not sure if he has been moved off exhibit again or possibly transferred elsewhere as the zoo has a new breeding male.
 
Oh poor Stripes. I do hope the mating he and Twiga were doing earlier this year according to someone was successful. Wonder if and when we will replace him. I would guess sooner rather than later considering Ginetta is getting up there in age. I dont think they would want a solitary giraffe.

Its too bad about the penguin since they are entering breeding season soon. The other deaths are sad too.

I was worried about the hippo calf. Poor little thing had such a rough life. They are so cute she would have been a huge draw if she could have stayed with Abou. Maybe we will be luckier next time.

Any news about the zebra foal. Did we get a boy or a girl? Is it doing well?
 
I think Shaka is still at the zoo, most likely in the main holding area of the savannah hoofstock yards (the main zebra area) as his usual exhibit (the old topi/wildebeast yard) doesn't have an appropriate holding area for the winter.
 
Just got my magazine say new African lion is this true I thought the boys were fixed. Also I wonder if the penguin that died was the one that spit up a penny.
 
I'm not entirely sure what you mean by new african lion is true... but i do get the fixed part so let me take as stab at what i think your asking or saying. Lindi and Jerroh are both fixed and have been for a long time. If by new african lion is true you mean we have an inact male capable of siring cubs we do. It would be Fintan our you male white lion. He, Lemon and Makali were brought in from South Africa with the intention on breeding to in theory increase the genetic diversity of white lions in North American (though based on what I know about white lions I seriously doubt they are that genetically diverse to begin with as an entire species). So in answer to what i think your question is, yes we do have an intact male African Lion who just happens to be white and new.

I dont know anything about the penguin but if people are throwing coins in the penguins pool again they absolutely deserve to be shot. Didn't the zoo get rid of our last batch of penguins who lived in the African Pavillion at least partly because people where being that stupid. I guess if the zoo wants to keep people from killing the zoos animals they need to go through everyones pockets before admittence or a less annoying thing might be for them to build wishing wells all over the place (probably close to any water exhibit) and let people go make their wishes there so our precious animals can live. Gives the zoo some always useful cash and protects the animals on exhibit... win win.

Greendottie since you get the magazine and i sadly live way too far away to make being a zoo member worthwhile... did it mention what killed poor old Stripes? I loved that giraffe... well all the giraffes... And did it have any reference to the pygmy hippo calf and her fate?

The african lion that arrived is one of the 3 white lions that went on display in May. It's possible that 2 of the 3 arrived during the period reported on in the last Collections magazine and the third arrived later.

The penguin death is completely unrelated to swallowing coins. Keepers have said though, that coins have not yet become a major issue (although its possible that the penguins are swallowing some, but not regurgitating them).

No mention of Stripes, as he died after the cut-off date. The zoo did acknowledge the birth of the pygmy hippo in the list of births, but no other details.

There was a new holding built for this exhibit and the ostrich during the summer. It looks like a concrete bunker.
 
Both the Ostriches and Shaka can over winter in the new house built by their exhibit.
 
Does anyone know when we are supposed to get our two new wombats from Brookfield Zoo? I'd like our new babies to arrive before the explosion of panda mania so they can get the attention they deserve. I mean with only 10 in North America and 3 due to be at our zoo we deserve to celebrate their arrival. There are more pandas, 15 (4 at San Diego, 2 at the Smithsonian, 2 in Memphis, 4 in Atlanta and 3 in Mexico), in North America than wombats. Hope they are here soon before their arrival becomes a big nothing.

Wow i thought there were more wombats than this. shocker!!! I love my wombats :)
When i was at San Diego in june i saw 2 Southern Hairy-nosed Wombats. How many does brookfield zoo have?Memphis zoo exhibits southern hairy-nosed wombats as well. How many do they have? Rio Grande zoo in New Mexico exhibits Common Wombats. Is this the only zoo that has them?
 
We have the three (someone in the Brookfield forum said they think they left long ago). Brookfield has 4 including and incredibly cute joey. so that accounts for 7 hairy nosed wombats. If you say there are 2 in san diego that must mean Memphis has one. That takes us to 10. I didnt mean all kinds of wombats just the hairy nosed variety. Could be plenty more of other kinds. Maybe i should have been more clear. Our new two were under a year old when I first heard about them awhile back so hopefully they are still somewhat little and we can watch them grow and have joeys of their own in the next couple of years. I've always been a big fan of them two. I grew up watching Hamlet dig and lumber around his exhibit so it might be a little bitter sweet if they kind of retire the old guy but cant beat a joey.
 
The wombats are at the zoo and may already be on exhibit. According to one article I read, the female's name is Millie.
 
Thanks Adams7. I wish the zoo would have used them as part of their summer of cuteness. People would have loved voting on their names, much more than the babarusa that few casual zoo goers would know about. Millie sounds like the prefect name for a little wombat. Wonder what the little males is?
