The Toronto Zoo without Musk-oxen? Unbelievable!!!

What is the reason for that phasing-out? I allways thought that the Musk-oxen not only fit perfectly in the clima of Toronto but also breed there. Was I completely wrong?
 
We used to have a lot of Musk-Ox back in the day. They had a huge exhibit along the Monorail route. The Monorail track is still visible in the front of the old exhibit. I'm not sure what exactly the story is about our final Musk-Ox, but he had a tainted past and was not to be bred as I understand. Maybe someone else on here knows the exact story....???
 
Our last musk-ox was born at the zoo, was about 16 years old and neutered. Before he was neutered, he gored and killed atleast two females that he was supposed to breed with

The Redside Dace has most likely died seeing as I have not seen it in a very long time as well.

Regarding the sacred ibis and pygmy hippo exhibits they have not been enlarged they are actually the same size, a remodelling of both exhibit did wonders to the appearance of size.
 
One new thing about the pygmy hippo exhibit, is that it opens into the Red River Hog exhibit. During the summer when the Hogs are out-doors the Hippos will have the use of both exhibits.
 
Ah, Thanks Quartz. The Ibis exhibit has a few more views and it just looked bigger to me. I guess I never realized how big their exhibit was until now. Good to here that the Pygmy's will have access to both exhibits in the summer.
 
The tigers are the cover story for the current Collections mag.

Indah is at Ueno Zoological Gardens and Kali is at Nagoya Higashiyama Zoo.

I'd look into seeing if you can donate or otherwise get a copy of it if you want to know more about the tigers but it sounds like things went well and that the zoo will be getting a new mate for Brytne from San Diego Zoo soon.
 
went to the zoo today, lots of fun, lemurs were only staying in one area but playing together. didn't see Charlies the gorilla, maybe off exhibit; and seen a bite of penguin construction. lots of rock in the exhibit.
 
I have a question...does anyone know the Arctic Foxes' names?
They were very active today, and we were talking to a keeper who gave us a tip on how to tell them apart: the female has one toe on her front right paw that sticks straight up. It broke a while ago and healed straight up, it's very easy to spot. Unfortunately he couldn't remember their names since he'd just started working in the area. So does anyone here know the names?

Was at the Zoo yesterday, only a few updates:

- Royal Python's are now on display in the new south-side of the African pavilion
- The bald eagle, Mikishi, is once again in the entrance exhibit
- Penguin construction is coming along. Most of the visible parts are tarped over though
 
Was at the zoo on March Break Friday:
The snow gesse were in the wolf holding
The Perswalski are in the old Winset enclosure, looked like only the males though, the females were in the usual
Three the anenome/octopus tanks were filled and had multiple air stones going
Redside Dance tank's lights was out
All the seahorses were pregnant
Little pied cormarants had a nest and I think I saw a egg
Ring-tailed Lemurs were huddled up together on a ledge in the back of their enclouser
 
Did anyone see that report where Barker said that Toronto Zoo partons were surveyed and like 91 percent would still go even if the zoo did not have elephants and then a sentence later he claimed the only reason we keep them is because our attendance would drop drastically if the elephants left? The guy totally contradicts his facts on a daily basis. The report was in the Toronto Star not to long ago. I agree that he needs to leave Toronto zoo alone
 
I agree; he needs to put his efforts into conservation, not harassing the zoo. Also there's tons of roadside zoos across the province, as well as a proposed (and illegal) disgusting coyote cull (slaughter) contest. Why's he turning a blind eye to these issues?
 
Bob Barker needs to put his efforts towards playing Plinko or something.As far as putting his money into global conservation such as the rainforest he certainly would if the PRICE WAS RIGHT! All kidding aside we are tired of these celebrities getting after zoos,wasn't Barker involved in that whole thing with Billy in LA.The decision on elephants in Toronto needs to be made based on what is best for everyone involved and should not be influenced by someone with nothing better to do.A good example of a zoo which was in financial trouble and had a difficult decision on their elephants is Detroit.Overall it has worked out well for them moving their elephants out and converting it into a rhino yard.The Toronto Zoo is one our favorites and they have our support on this no matter what they decide to do with the elephants.

I agree that if Barker wants to complain and be an activist about something he should be focussing on the roadside zoos instead of Toronto. If he made the effort to drive 30 minutes east of Toronto Zoo and I don't know, make a stop in Bowmanville and visit their zoo, his agravations against Toronto's elephant exhibit may change!
