Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo Present Happenings 2011

I for one would be disappointed to see the elephants go. They are certainly one of my favourite animals to visit.

I do not begrudge Bob Barker for standing up for what he believes in, but I would prefer to see Barker trying to find ways to help the TZ and other zoos in northern climates fundraise so they can afford to build more suitable/appropriate living conditions.

I also have to say I was pretty disappointed with the elephant keeper I saw on Friday. With 4-5 news crews there to film the elephant demonstration and hear his chat, you can imagine my disappointment when the first words out of his mouth were "it's a little chilly out here today"! I mean seriously!! It didn't take a genius to figure out why the news crews were there and he only gave them further ammunition to support Barker's contention that it's too cold in Toronto for elephants. Again, the TZ is it's own worst enemy.

Sigh ...

I don't know where I should post this, but does anyone happen to have any pictures of the recently refurbished (south side) pavilion or the construction progress of the penguin exhibit, would be greatly appreciated thanks! I apologize in advance if this isn't the correct place to post my question here.

I have some photos but they are not great quality as I took them on my phone. Nothing really to update for the penguins, you cannot see much from a public path. The exhibit will be opening on May 21st.

Gone to the Toronto zoo yesterday, and tried to take a sneak peak inside of the new penguin exhibit. But no luck. :(
workers saw me..lol
The only thing i saw from the walk way was that they were freshening up the seating area at the side of the exhibit. looks really good and new.
and also i seems to me that they extend to viewing area so people can see the penguins on the ground. BUT NOT 100% SURE
Finally some of the workers were digging in front of the exhibit by the main walkway, don't know what they were doing but it seems to me they where doing some foundation or doing some plumbing.

Over all its looks really really good from where i was, and i really do thing that it will by finish by may 21 :D

I was at the zoo today and the grizzly bears were very active and I'm not sure if they two bears are siblings are not but there was attempts of mating.

Our male grizzly bear is neutered, so even if they are siblings (which I don't think they are) they wouldn't get to far with mating

Was at the zoo tonight for a VIP event to open the penguin and leemur exhibits. The zoo definitely knows how to throw a great celebration! The penguin exhibit is huge and the underwater viewing area is absolutely wonderful! The penguins were interacting with us at the windows ... very cool!!

The leemurs were playful and racing around tonight ... lots of fun!

Hope everyone can get out to the zoo soon to enjoy the penguins and the leemurs. Truly a great time for the zoo!

A glimpse of the penguin exhibit (underwater). It just looks like they placed rocks at the bottom of the pool. :|

Went to the zoo today and I chose the worst day to go, one being that it is the long weekend and the opening of the penguin exhibit to the public, therefore there zoo is loaded with people and it was so hot. I will post the pix tmrw!

What are the names of the two Siberian tigers at the zoo and are they are a breeding pair?

I can't remember the name of the male, at the moment. He's younger and just recently came from another zoo. The female is Tatiana. She is not expected to be bred again since she's getting up there in age and also had lots of troubles with her hips in recent years as well as a surgery on her hips.

I would take a wild guess and assume that Toronto Zoo would bring in a younger female to breed with the young male. There was some talk about re-doing their enclosure, so maybe that is necessary first. I really don't know, but I hope they do put together a breeding pair once again.

The new male's name is Vitali, and he is from Calgary Zoo

There is an animal moving/shipping container now in the snow leopard enclosure. I am assuming that they have finally found a home for the young female from the 2009 litter. Hopefully this means Tiga and Kota will be back together within a few months. Those two cats get along so well. Although I have heard talk that Kota may be going back to Winnipeg soon and may not be breeding the snow leopards again because of difficulty finding homes for the cubs.

If that is the case with Kota, I hope they bring her(?) back for the new Eurasia section. Snow leopards are suppose to be in the plan.

Are any of the lions at the zoo capable of breeding with other lions (via new lions from other zoos)? Or does the zoo plan to have any lions come in?

the 2 younger lions are both neutered males, brothers... the dad and mom are getting older and I don't think will be breeding again.
We'd have to get a whole bunch new lions in and at the moment I just don't see that happening as they have to keep the two groups apart and even separated by an empty enclosure if not the kids try and take on the dad.

@bluebager, correction to your statement, they need to keep the kids and dad separate by one PEN in the house. The four lions, Nokanda & Rowdy (Parents), and their two sons Jeroh and Lindy (sp?). Nokanda has been fixed, so breeding is not an option for the lions.

@Tiffanyanddave, as far as I know the two siberian tigers will be put together for breeding soon.

Thanks bluebadger! I was also curious if the two pygmy hippos planned for breeding and if the group of lemurs are a breeding group? Are the komodo dragons planned for breeding or is there only one left at the zoo? And does the zoo currently only have our female tree kangaroo?

If I do remember reading from the forums, has the new male Sumatran tiger and female tapir settled into the zoo? Or are they still in quarantine?

I hope that you are right. That would be wonderful. :)

I know that the SSP gave approval to breed Tatiana but all of the Eurasia keepers were against breeding her because of her degrading hip condition. I suppose only time will tell.
