InsideToronto Article: Councillor proposes zoo replace real elephants with interactive displays

Really?

Does this sound like something a zoo would have?

I do not agree with this, if the zoo was to get rid of the elephants then I would put 15 million towards other developments not an interactive display!

The Councillor needs his head examined by a shrink (LOL)! Elephants versus interactive displays (perhaps he should site these in his own garden or backyard)!!!

For the record: the councillor is only worried about his budget, he does not serve nor placate the interests of the zoo. A price tag of mio 15$ is indeed large, however ... if it where any other public building we would have no qualms in citing sums like mio. 60-80$, now would we?

The Toronto Zoo has had - in the past - a successful breeding programme for African elephant. Why throw away all that experience (this to some animal welfarist in favour of travelling in droves to Africa and Asia to see them on safari and as non eco-touristic ..., goodness forbid if they all did go on a safari) and have to look for a viable elephant BREEDING facility within AZA able to accomodate several elderly elephants. Besides from an essentially animal welfare point of view to break up the herd and send it elsewhere does not serve ANY animal welfare concerns (at least not those which are scientific and argumentative based).

Given the current clime and various other priorities and renovation plans, I do concur that perhaps other buildings and exhibits take precedence. This is however not to say that TZ should not endeavour to import and rejuvenate its herd for breeding purposes!! (which I think in light of the goals of the African Elephant SSP is imperative).

I rest my 5 cents here ... then

Here is an update,
- Te arctic foxes moved into their exhibit in the Tundra!
- Consevation Carosel is under construction
- There is some clearing being done between the Americas Pavilion and the Caribou Cafe, there will be Native works of art and plants to make a garden area to support the Turtle Island Conservation project.

Can you elaborate on the Turtle Island Conservation Project. Sounds quite interesting and intricate?

I am so going to have to go to the zoo soon to check out those foxes :) Glad to hear we're getting more garden areas! Here's what I found about Turtle Island Conservation Project which sounds very good IMO:

I don't have any other information on it then what I said. Sorry.

The African Pavilion is also coming along good as well you can see that the walls are up but still very barren and unrecognizable.

Hey Guys;

Just a question. Going to the zoo tommorow and my friend told me that the Scholfield Memorial Garden was under construction. Is this true? Are there any exhibits that are closed during this construction?

Just wondering if anyone knows.

Thanks guys, Happy Easter.

Yes, the memorial has broken ground however when I was there last it had not affected any exhibits and I do not think it will!

I think (but could be wrong), the gardens are being put in an area where there currently isn't anything/needed sprucing up.

Yea you are right Meaghan! O and JMAN, I might see you there tomorrow cause I am going as well!

You are right about that as well Meaghan just in front of it actually! I looks good so far!

That's great! I'm looking really forward to seeing it and I wonder if they're going to keep to the Korean theme. I love taking pictures of flowers/plants as much as I do with animals -- at least they're cooperative ;)

Hey everyone,

Just got back from the zoo and it was crazy busy, lol. The memorial gardens are starting to happen, there is a statue of Dr. Scholfield already up. Southside of the African Pavillion is coming along good; looks like there is a large fake tree being constructed in the middle similar to the one in the Gorilla Rainforest plus some rockwork being done. Lastly, not sure if this has already been mentioned, the new male South African Ostrich is own display and very VERY vocal.

Oh, terrific! Maybe the fake tree is for the Mandrill's. I've got to check out the new Ostrich male next time I'm there. Those birds have character!

Any pictures of the construction by chance anyone?:)
Does anyone even have an concept art for what they are redoing?

This is actually the continuation of a post in the history thread, but it seems more appropriate here:

The construction going on in both the wisent and drom paddocks is (eventually) going to be incorporated into the new north site developments. In both spots, they're drilling down to put in geothermal systems. Once they're drilled (500 feet down, perhaps?), they'll put the pipes down and then cap them. That way, once construction starts, that part of the project is done. Both sites will eventually have interpretive centres on them.
