That is terribly sad news to hear, Hopefully he takes a turn for the better:)
Hopefully i will get to see him in my next visit in a couple of weeks.

Any new updates anyone? Has anyone been able to see what the pavillion looks like lately? I image they must be getting closer and closer to the finishline now? The last picture i saw was a couple weeks old now and it looked like it was comming along very well.

I went yesterday and have some pictures. Also like to add that both Samanthas death and the death of Rengat both groups hard, nethier group has any enerjy to bohter with zoo geust and barley responds to thier keepers. On a happier note there was a new sable antelope, probly born around may or june.

Sad to hear that the groups arn't dealing well. However it is great to hear about the baby being out. :) Can't wait to see the pictues:) please upload them soon.

Animalman - i was just wondering are you a zoo employee? a volunteer?

Does this mean that no breeding prospects exist for the Sumatran tigers at Toronto for the foreseeable future?

Glad to hear the young pair of Indian rhinos is unexpectedly precocious in dealing with incumbent offspring .... (fingers crossed for late 2011)!!! :D

It means the zoo is looking for another Sumatran Male. It might take a while to find a match for thier female, not to mention that they still have last years cubs. So no breeding will take place till they can send thosse two to other zoos.

It would be nice to get another set of cubs:) but.....HOLD UP! i'm not remebering species correctly at all lol, is the sumatran tigers the one near the indomalyan pavillion? or are they the ones in eurasia? this might seem silly, as i'm pretty sure that it's siberean tigers in eurasia, but i do want to make sure.
Either way, now that we only will in time have a female, perhaps now would be a good time to improve the exhibit? Maybe enlarge? Change the viewing? anything for it? (i'm not sure if anything is planned or not? in anytime frame)

Sumatrans live near the indo malayan pavillion and Siberians in Eurasia. Change is planned for the Siberians soon.

okay i thought so!!!:)
I think that area of the zoo could use a renovation as well:)
What are the plans for the siberians? I know they are suppose to have a small renovation done, but is that it?

If im not mistaken its thier house and a part of thier enclosure. It will be done with Eurasia in 2011. If they get the money.

Hmmm, sounds interesting enough......i sure do wish i could see some concept art of the future projects for the zoo, eurasia has gone through the design process already right?

Interesting development for the tigers! Such a shame they are depresed, but not surprised. I shake my head at people who think animals have no souls and are incapable of emotion :(

At the Zoo today, few updates:

--The front exhibit that formely held Mikishi the Bald Eagle and the Concave Casque Hornbill is now holding two Himalayan Monal Pheasants and the exhibit looks a little different
--Crocodile Lizard now on display with the Crocodile Newts in Indo-Malaya
--some Birds from the south side of the African Pavillion are on display in the Gorilla Avairy such as two Hammerkop
--Juvenile Black Widows were on display in the Black Widow Exhibit, Egg sack was there too
--Reindeer were not on display in Tundra Trek, but were weirdly on display with the Yaks in Eurasia. Not sure why??
--Many exhibits were being rearanged/reshaped and the animals were off display. Exhibits that look to have changes are Caracal Lynx, Alligator Snapping Turtle, Northern Painted Turtle, and Spiny Soft Shelled Turtle. Also the Green House display outside the Indo Malayan pavillion beside the Peking Robins no longer has any plants in it.

Hmm interesting developments, i'll be sure to check those things out and update on tuesday to see if they are still that way, or what they are doing.

I was most wondering about the Alligator Snapping Turtle exhibit. Usually the exhibits that are off display have a "Temporaily Off Display for Exhibit Maitenance or Weather conditions" but all that was in Maximus' exhibit was "Sorry, Exhibit being Remodelled". I'm not sure what that means but I do hope Maximus is alright.

I really like this Turtle fellow. I wish I knew how old he was. I hope he's okay and that he's back on exhibit soon. He does move a little slow but I have seen him pretty active the last few visits. I think the zoo is getting more turtles and hopefully expanding the turtle exhibits to accommodate more friends.

Ya, there are new turtles in the Indo-Malayan pavillion turtle exhibits. Including some smaller tanks and the burmese tortoise exhibit has a few more tortoises then usually and it looks refurbished. I'm not sure how old Maximus is, but I remember reading somewhere that he is one of the largest Alligator Snappers in North American capativity, but don't quote me.

Good news / bad news about Maximus the alligator snapping turtle: he is doing well, but has moved to Florida, where he has a larger outdoor pool and perhaps some friends. The exhibit will be refurbished for another turtle species.

I'll miss Maxiumus, but glad to hear he's moving to bigger quarters with possible buddies :) I love turtles and I'm going to make a note of it to check out the newbies in the Indo pavilion.
