Toucans in North American Zoos

A quick but important note:

As per the 2022 Piciformes TAG Regional Collection Plan (AZA), the Dallas World Aquarium does hold blue-throated toucanet (Aulacorhynchus caeruleogularis). The document indicates DWA holds 8.6 of the species (14 in total).

The Dallas World Aquarium also holds spot-billed toucanet (Selenidera maculirostris) indicating 3.3 of the species (6 in total).

Other notes from the 2022 Piciformes TAG Regional Collection Plan (AZA):

As we know, the Dallas World Aquarium has the largest and most diverse collection of Piciformes in the AZA. The facility alone is home to 9 species in the Ramphastidae family (toucans, toucanets, and araçaris) that cannot be found anywhere else within the AZA. The RCP indicates an interesting note within the document, "One AZA accredited institution, The Dallas World Aquarium currently holds a disproportionate number of Aracaris (69%), Toucanets (86%), and Toucans (49%). The TAG will work closely with this critical member institution and respective SSP coordinators to encourage a level of program compliance that is beneficial to both the institution and the AZA populations" (page, 17).

Species exclusively held at DWA:
  • Ariel toucan Ramphastos ariel (5.4) (Recently described as a subspecies of channel-billed toucan and therefore Ramphastos vitellinus ariel)
  • Red-breasted toucan Ramphastos dicolorus (6.7)
  • Saffron toucanet Pteroglossus bailloni (8.8)
  • Fiery-billed araçari Pteroglossus frantzii (6.0)
  • Many-banded araçari Pteroglossus pluricinctus (12.4)
  • Black-throated toucanet Aulacorhynchus atrogularis (0.1)
  • Blue-throated toucanet Aulacorhynchus caeruleogularis (8.6)
  • Blue-banded toucanet Aulacorhynchus coeruleicinctis (4.1)
  • Spot-billed toucanet Selenidera maculirostris (3.3)
Species held at DWA and one other AZA institution:
  • Plate-billed mountain toucan Andigena laminostris (7.9) - San Diego Zoo
  • Chestnut-eared araçari Pteroglossus castanotis (17.10) - ?
  • Pale-mandibled araçari Pteroglossus erythropygius (13.9) - Milwaukee County Zoo
  • Lettered araçari Pteroglossus inscriptus (22.22) - Prospect Park Zoo
  • Collared araçari Pteroglossus torquatus (2.0) - Houston Zoo or Assiniboine Park?
*Note: Pteroglossus inscriptus have been identified as Humboldt's araçari on this thread. I have chosen to refer to them as Lettered araçari as the AZA RCP does not recognize subspecies.

I also think it is important to note that 96 AZA institutions did not respond to the RCP. This means that if these institutions hold any Piciformes, they were not included in the final species count. Most, if not all, of the institutions that did not respond do not hold any toucan/toucanet/araçari species to my knowledge.

All other species held within the AZA have been previously mentioned in this thread. I have no numbers on individuals and species held outside of the AZA.

Dallas World Aquarium holds northern emerald toucanet Aulacorhynchus prasinus.

The 2022 Piciformes TAG RCP did not indicate that the Dallas World Aquarium was the exclusive holder for northern emerald toucanet (Aulacorhynchus prasinus). However, only one female (0.1) is held within the AZA. I think this has to be an error within the document as, to my knowledge, DWA has been the only holder of this species (as indicated by this thread).

Northern-emerald-toucanet-2

I should also note, the "emerald toucanet" held by Emerald Forest Bird Gardens is a subspecies of the southern emerald toucanet (Aulacorhynchus albivitta cyanolaemus).

Information from AZA documents isn't public knowledge and really shouldn't be posted on zoochat like this. I know it's interesting, but you have to maintain a certain level of confidentiality with information that isn't accessible to the public.

I'm going to second Neil Chace here - while interesting information it isn't public, and listing out everything on the RCP isn't exactly in line with their privacy policy I expect.
