Tree kangaroos in Europe

I've been to Krefeld this month and I only saw 3 Goodfellow's tree kangaroos, in both exihbiths. A young one and a pair.

1. Krefeld have 2.3 individuals after the export of Buna to Wissel Zoo in Epe.

2. The Krefeld Zoo still maintains 2 breeding pairs + pouch young (at the moment just 1, but keep fingers crossed for the new Melbourne/Krefeld pairing).

Here's a few more info...
Concerning Beauval, they have both Dendrolagus species found in european zoos (Goodfellow's and Matschie) and both bred.
They currently have two goodfellows pair (+ young) and 3 matschies (1.2) + young if not left for another park.
Concerning Walsrode, they have a pair of goodfellow's tree kangaroo, one comes from Frankfurt and one from Krefeld.
As far as Dendrolagus goodfellowi is concerned, there are some interrogations about the subspecies in european zoos.
What is sure is that Krefeld, Beauval and most parks holding Goodfellow's have the buergersi subspecie.
But Frankfurt (and one of the tree kangaroos from Walsrode) is said to have shawmayeri subspecie... Is it really true? Is this subspecie valid... that's the problem!

No, actually only one subspecies naming is valid (viz the Melbourne Zoo trees assignment). At the end of the day buergersi and shawmayeri are synonymus in taxonomic terms. So, no hybridisation at all!

I guess the Currumbin people actually pull the string in trees and perhaps they would be the best folks to start up an international studbook and WAZA assigned coop breeding programme (since the entire population is spread out over US, European and Aussie/Papuan collections).
 
I believe the US zoos are going out of the goodfellow's, exporting their animals to Europe and Australia, to concentrate on matschie`s. This certainly makes sense to me. If I remember right males are expected from US zoos in europe soon to form new breeding pairs with the young females in Dortmund and Epe.

Hi Jelle, there is already an international studbook for all Dendrolagus species - it is held jointly by the PNG Museum and Adelaide Zoo.

The program in Australaisa, and therefore, any exports out of Australasia is managed by the regional species coordinator.
 
Zoo Brisbane ?

0.1 Goodfellow's tree kangaroo "Loomy", ex Zoo Brisbane (on their website)
- sent on to Dortmund Zoo in November/December 2007.

I wonder which place they are referrring to here , as there is no "Zoo Brisbane" per se , although Jay and others would dearly wish there was .
It could be referring to
(1) Alma Park
(2) Lone Pine
(3) Australia Zoo
(4) Currimbin
(5) David Fleays park

though the last 3 options are not really in Brisbane
 
As far as I know, Fleay's and Currumbin are the only institutions close to Brisbane that have had tree-kangaroos, and Fleay's haven't had Goodfellow's.

I suspect they mean Currumbin Sanctuary.

Am I clear on this that the species of choice for ARAZPA is the Dendrolagus goodfellowi? What is the status of any Dendrolagus matschei in ARAZPA members?

Is only the Rainforest Habitat in PNG maintaining stocks of most other Dendrolagus species (save for the critically endangered Tenkile)?

The PNG Museum is the entity - National Museum - in Waigani, Port Morseby, is it not?


Actually the latter facility also exhibits some live native hornbills, parrots and ducks. Their Life and Land Gallery houses a nice preserved bird specimen collection including a wide range of birds' of paradise. Furthermore they maintain dioramas of every habitat type from mangroves to highland rainforest.
