'Trendy' species in european zoos and zoo collections!

Squirrel Monkeys in walk-through exhibits are definitly trendy - London and Blackpool have done it, and I expect others will follow their lead.

I think Woburn Safari Park were the first UK zoo to do it. Likewise with their walkthrough rainbow lorikeet house which others have copied.

Didn't Chester have Fur Seals or Patagonian Sealions at some stage? I was surprised on my visit last year to see just a couple of Californian sealions on show. I'm sure I've seen Fur Seals there previously....

I've only ever known sealions at Chester. When I did my research last year I found no records of fur seals or Patagonian Sealions.

Last time I looked at ISIS Chester had only 1.1 sealions. Does anyone know what is going on?

Butterfly house seem to be quite trendy in the UK. London have their 'bouncy castle' butterfly house, Chester are building one, and so are Colchester I believe.

It must be my imagination playing tricks. Actually I'm surprised Chester haven't upgraded to keeping one of the more unusual fur seal species- the big ones e.g. from Patagonia are very impressive.

I have a feeling a decision will be made fairly soon regarding the sealions, i doubt Chester will want to keep 1.1 for much longer.

I believe Chessington have a Squirrel monkey/people contact area- wasn't one stolen by someone?

I think one of the first places to have a 'walkin' squirrel monkey area was Apenheul in Holland- theirs are free range if I remember correctly, but there is a 'base' area where you can go in and they jump all over you- with nicely urine-impregnated hands and feet....

Sealions were kept in the old polar bear pool for a while. Could this be why you thought you had seen another species perhaps?

Quite right they were kept in the old Polar Bear enclosure,but do you know which U.K collection they came from and where they went to after they left Chester???

The pair housed in the polar bear pool in 1984 came from Brighton Aquarium. I don't know where they went to, though I have a vague memory of Whipsnade, can't say for sure though. I'll see if I have any info on them.

Nope, never saw them in there. Its just some weird idea I've got which I shall now dispense with....

I think they went to the Cornish Seal Sanctuary as they recieved a pair of Californians in which the male was going blind just like the one that was kept in the Polar bear enclosure.
