I was just wondering whether anyone had a list of the species exhibited at the Natural History Museum at Tring.
I am visiting the Museum sometime late December to early January in order to record all the species there for the purpose of seeing some of the rare specimens on display at the museum, some of which cannot be found anywhere else (thinking the jaglion, leopard x puma and some of the rare duikers.).

You're obviously well-aware of many of the noteworthy specimens on display such as the lion x jaguar hybrid, the leopard × puma hybrid and the quagga (which is probably the one from the Knowsley Menagerie).

I cannot really add much to the extensive list provided by Mo Hassan but a few other interesting exhibits are:
• pygmy hog
• melanistic serval
• albino leopard
• albino American black bear
• Komodo dragon (I think one of the two London Zoo had in the 1930s)

Walter Rothschild was obsessed with cassowaries and collected more than sixty mounted specimens for his museum (in addition to keeping live cassowaries in Tring Park). Unfortunately, only a few of his mounted cassowaries are currently exhibited in the Tring Museum but they still make an impressive display.

Although they don't interest me nearly as much as the wild animals, there is also a large collection of domestic dogs on display, including the once famous greyhound "Mick the Miller".

I wish Northern cassowaries were more commonly found in zoos - I find them very nice-looking animals, much more so than their Southern counterparts, or any other species of cassowary for that matter.

It is quite hard to get to from London isn't it? It is a 40 minute train from Euston and then a longish walk/but from there. You also have to get to Euston, which, for me, because I live in the South-East, is quite difficult.

Yes, it's about a forty minute train journey from Euston station to Tring. Then it is at least a thirty minute walk to the museum (probably forty minutes unless you're a fast walker). There is a bus service from a stop near the station to the museum but the bus runs so infrequently that it's probably quicker to walk. There is also a taxi office outside the station but, again, unless you book a taxi in advance, you'll probably have such a long wait for a taxi, it will be quicker to walk.

I believe he was also similarly obsessed with Giant Tortoises- I know he kept a lot in Tring Park. They obviously only have room for a few of the sixty cassowaries in the galleries, but its still more than average. Last time I went I noticed they had dimmed the lighting in some areas, principally the marsupials and smaller placental mammals to try and prevent further fading to the taxidermies.

Some of the dogs in the dog display are quite moth-eaten- I think they all stem from the early 20th century, and its interesting to see how much the modern counterparts of some of the breeds have changed in appearance, from selective breeding, over the intervening decades.

The primate collection is a good one also though no individual specimen springs to mind.

Yes Rothshild was obsessed with giant tortoises too. He paid for the construction of London Zoo's Tortoise House (which we remember as the Hummingbird House).

Rather like the cassowaries, most of his giant tortoises are off-exhibit for obvious reasons.

But I wish room could be found to display all sixty plus cassowaries; what a fantastic sight that would be.
 
There are some very interesting taxidermy specimens at tring indeed and I definitely think it is a must see for anyone with an interest in zoology / biology and the history of Science. The overall atmosphere of the place is decidedly old school , eccentric and charming and upon entering it feels very much like you have stepped back in time or been caught in a time warp.

When I visited this summer I was very impressed by some of the examples of rarer species such as the flatheaded cat, marbled cat, birds of paradise, indri , mountain gorilla , probocsis monkey, Sumatran rhino, leopard seal, saiga antelope, tarsier and several of the more obscure mouse lemur species. I know it is unlikely that I will ever see any of these either in the wild or in captivity so it was really quite a treat to see these specimens.

The extinct species on display at the museum also stick in my mind and I remember seeing some very poignant specimens of lesser bilby , thylacine, passenger pigeon ,quagga and the great auk. Not to mention there are numerous examples of hybrids like the "jaglion" , "pumapard" , "prizzly bear" and "Zebroid" foal and some unusual albino specimens like an African leopard and a musk deer.

Totally agree , a very interesting exhibit indeed. I believe at least some of the dog breeds on display have gone extinct fairly recently too. I remember seeing a taxidermy specimen of a hairless breed of dog called an "Abyssynian sand terrier" which strongly resembled some of the Precolombian breeds of Mexico (Xoloitzcuintli) and Peru (Inca hairless).

After my visit I was intrigued and tried looking for information on that particular breed but didn't find much on it except that it was believed by many to be extinct.

There is a reference of a specimen of the extinct laughing owl (Apparently it was kept by Rothschild as a pet for a number of years ) on page 28 of this digitized 1889 guide book to the museum on the biodiversity heritage library site.

I believe that the laughing owl specimen you refer to is now in the American Museum of Natural History in New York.

Sadly, Lord Rothschild sold the bulk of his ornithological collection to the American Museum of Natural History; he was being blackmailed so he needed to raise money to pay his blackmailer. (Rothschild refused to sell his beloved cassowaries though and all sixty plus of them remained at Tring.)

Thanks for this Tim ! , much appreciated , I was wondering why I hadn't seen it while I was there. Looks like I missed it at both Tring by a century and at New York almost a decade ago. :(

I'll definitely check out the link , very interesting species and history.
 
Walter Rothschild bought George the mandrill from Paris for £124 in 1906. London Zoo looked after George, who met Theodore Roosevelt. George died in 1916 and added to the Museum.

Always interesting to know the story behind the specimens there. There are quite a few others at Tring which seem enigmas and must have fascinating backstories (indri, mountain gorilla, flat headed cat, lesser bilby, thylacine etc).

I feel like the museum should maybe highlight some of these more as the Natural History Museum in London often does with their collections but I get the impression that the museum at Tring often plays second fiddle in that regard.
