I had a short visit to flamingo land yesterday was only able to quickly look round the zoo but it was quite a pleasent visit.

There have been a few new features since my last last visit such as the new arial walk way which has replaced the bird walk ,the walk way gives views of the flamingoes ,the now mixed south american exibit with brazilian tapir ,alpaca, capybara, mara, agouti and rhea, distant views of the lechwe paddock and also of the new kangaroo and wallaby paddock and the emu paddock. But it was puzzaling that the kangaroos and wallabys were not mixed with the emu, but both of them having large paddocks.

Unfortunately the condors are to far away to some of the birds have not been relocated in the zoo yet, the penguins have left but are due back next year in a brand new exibit.

The african area was quite impressive there is one large paddock with hybrid giraffe, zebra and ostrich. Next to them is a lake with three common hippos which as usual where hard to spot. There is also two white rhino oposite the mixed african paddock which i think are bulls but the park does not give much information on the animals in the zoo and there are no keeper talks etc.
They also have a new second group of pure Rosthchilds giraffe in a seperate smaller paddock, they are about two years of age with the male coming from woburn ,they are hoping to breed from them. though they are near some rides and noise.
The lion enclosure is impressive as it is very large i think about two acres, which has a rockface in and varoius logs but could do with something else, there is also a large indoor enclosure aswell as the seperate dens.
It was hard to spot the lions and i only saw a glimpse of them, plus they are surrounded by a water ride.

As well as the species stated above other species that stand out are Chimps, bactrian camel, amur tiger, scimatar horned oryx, white crowned mangabeys and eurasian lynx.

I also went to the bird display which was extreamly good, it is in a large purpose built arena with a rock efect.
The display included ground hornbill, african pied crow, macaws, harris hawk, barn owlsand a african hooded vulture though they have many more birds behind the scenes such as various other parrot species ,turkey vultures, eagle owl, red legged seriema, kookaburras, trumperter hornbill, doves ,toucans and turacos.

The sea lion show was also very good and also educational , they have four male sea lions in what used to be the old dolphin pool.

The zoo is not that big but having some intersting species, they have many common species as it is a theme park aswell but many of the updated enclosures are alot better than what the park used to be like.

Nice review, just out of interest do you have any pics of the hippo lake? Thanks :)

Sorry did not get any pics of the hippo lake, hope to go again this year so will do. You can see it in the distance in some of my photos, the water is brown so you can only see the hippos when there out its quite a large size but with no grass and they have worn away the banks.

Any recent news from Flamingo Land? How many giraffe's do they currently hold?

Can you just visit the animals or does the entry fee include the rides?

The entry fee includes both the rides and zoo, it's about £21 pounds now i think, they used to open just the zoo during the winter but not always depending on what renovations they are doing.

I`m not so sure that they do house a pure and a hybrid group of Giraffes, because when I visited last month some of the Giraffes in what they were claiming to be Baringo`s looked very wonky to me,will try and check this out and get back to you.

Was there this week for a conference. Was only able to have a very quick walk round but the baby giraffe looked fit & healthy :)

Which male white rhinos are at Flamingoland (origins also if possible)?

They have 2:0 at present. 1:0 was born in 2004 or 2005 at Marwell and the other is also around the same age although he came from Whipsnade. They both arrived in 2007 after the previous two departed for Sweden and Africa Alive, They were both born at and came from Marwell in 2002.

Hi,

I believe that the rhinos are call Shaka and Kashka. Flamingo Land have now opened their new penguin pool. It is huge, with a large rocky nest area. Will post some pictures in their gallery soon.
