Truth or lack of knowledge?

To add to this list: Chester, Bristol and a few more whose name escapes me!

The snail was truly a collaboration of zoos and seems to go well
I believe that the other zoo`s only got them after London had started to breed them, and not before.

I thought ZSL got them after Jersey did.

If zoos try to replicate this, then they will have to cut out a lot of other exhibits. Let's take Denver Zoo for instance. They built a very expensive predator ridge for Lions, Spotted Hyenas, and Wild Dogs. Well, I know that it is important to have education in zoos, but why not make the whole exhibit for the endangered dogs that have only bred once and don't breed usually in zoos. I still like seeing the lions and Hyenas, but I think there should be a balance that I can't put my finger on. Does someone else have any comments or input?

Most zoos long ago recognized that displaying animals for education and entertainment (two of their missions) was usually a different situation then breeding endangered species (the mission of some, but not all zoos). So some zoos have separate breeding or conservation facilities (Bronx at least in the past, Audubon, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati to name a few). These adjuncts benefit from the zoo's resources including funds, equipment and staff expertise. They are usually not public so that they can concentrate on doing the job of breeding rather than accommodating families, etc.

But to use your example, if Predator Ridge was only dogs attendance would not have gotten a boost nor continued to grow. Zoo leaders try to strike a balance between their sometimes conflicting missions. Many cities want their own zoo. Few want merely a breeding farm. So there is a funding stream to consider. The issue you are struggling with isn't an easy one. You're not missing anything

Thank you. I know there has to be a balance but at times it just bothers me.

Sure can't blame you for that.

These decisions really are difficult. I know zoo staff also debate it. There are no easy answers I think. Maybe no right answers either.
