I don't really have any tips specific to that camera other then the one tip I already gave you about pressing the lens right to the glass.

However, I found a page of tips a while back relating to zoo photography which is put together by a guy that is just amazing at taking photos of zoo animals. Link: deviantART: Sooper-Deviant's Journal: Zoo & Aquarium Photography

10 acres?!? Thats bigger than the Detroit Zoo's Arctic Ring of Life!

@tiffanyanddave They must have uploaded it today cause I have been checking everyday to see if there has been info posted about the Tundra.

@Zoogoer I really think this exhibit will be one of a kind! It may not have a walk through tunnel but will definatly be one of the best Arctic exhibits around!

The PDF version of the map has great detail too!

After having a good look at the map I have noticed that what I thaught was going to be the Arctic fox exhibit is part of the Arctic wolf holding and that the Arctic fox exhibit is something completely separate!

Looking at the PDF document of the Tundra Trek, the arctic foxes have a small exhibit, unless the arctic foxes have access to the large arctic wolf exhibit when the wolves are off exhibit. The arctic fox holding is connected with the Arctic wolf yard, so I would assume so.

From the map, the exhibit looks small but do remember for this size of species, it will do a good job

As for access to the arctic wolf exhibit, I don't think it would happen because the zoo would have to tunnel proof the arctic wolf exhibit as well to prevent an escape

There is a possibliity to breed all species going in the Tundra, now that space is avaliable for all species they all have a chance to produce some offspring! Which includes polar bears, arctic wolves and foxes, snowy owl, reindeer and snow geese, FYI!

Yup, heads up to all who plan on going to the zoo within the next year, attendance will sky rocket with the addition of polar bears again. I can tell you that crowds of people will be lined up to see a polar bear cubs or a litter of arctic wolves/foxes.

When the polar bears left the zoos attendance plumited, which is the reason for the addition of Dinosaurs Alive!, and Stingray Bay.

I for one am extreamly excited to see those amazing creatures back on the Toronto Zoo soil!

I am thinking by the end of August I will post an extensive collection of photos from my 2009 visits to the zoo. So I will have most animals in pictures and it will give me a while to have pictures from throughout the zoo!

Just thinking about how were are going to have this competition! Do you guys think we should have it for a period of like 2 weeks or just for the member nights? How should we post the pictures, should they be animals only?

- In my opinion I think it should be for 2 weeks giving Toronto Zoo fans to take pictures.
- They way I think we should post pictures is in the gallery and title them "Tundra Trek -Photo Competition - Polar Bear" or if its a picture of an Arctic fox "Tundra Trek Photo Competition - Arctic Fox" along those lines.
- I think it should be only animals!
- I also think when the deadline hits is that we should start a new fourm and have a poll for all photos submitted, but should we have it one picture per person and have the best photo out of the pictures taken by that person in the poll? I think it should be one photo per person and then posted in a poll, then we can have a voting period on ZooChat!

If its an okay idea, would people mind if I took charge of the competition?

Any opinions?

Quartz92,

I am all for you being in charge of the competition, that's totally fine with me. I like your idea for the naming scheme of the photos. I think they should be posted in the gallery as you suggested, but with direct links to them posted in a thread that will be used for the competition.

I'm not sure about whether it should be the members only nights or 2 weeks. My concern would be that there might be an overwhelming amount of photos if it's open for 2 weeks. We'll see what others think about this and decide as the time gets closer, I think.

I think it should be animals only as well. However, maybe there could be one winner for best polar bear photo, one winner for best arctic wolf photo, etc.

The winner for best photo per animal is exactly what I was thinking of. Im still border line on time length too but what are other opinions?

Just a few updates I found out about yesterday:

- The polar bear exhibit was designed to hold 7 polar bears. However, the zookeepers are fighting to keep the maximum at 5 polar bears so that it isn't overcrowded. Hopefully we will see some babies within the next couple of years.

- The snowy owl laid an egg a few weeks ago and probably will not be able to be moved to the new exhibit in time for the opening of Tundra Trek. It will be pretty interesting to see a baby snowy owl.

- Off-topic: The Toronto Zoo is trying to artificially inseminate the camels. Apparently the Chinese were successful at it, but not willing to share their secrets as to how they did it.

In the news articles published the zoo said the Polar Bear exhibit was designed to house up to 6 bears, I wonder where the 7 holding is, on all the maps there are only six holding chambers?

I'm not really sure, I haven't even looked at the maps all that well. I'm just going by what the keeper was saying.

Regardless, I am really looking forward to the end of this month. We've waited so long and now it is just around the corner. We will probably go both nights.

By the way, I've moved recently and lost my Collections magazine. Do you know where we are to enter for the Tundra Trek on the members only nights? (If I remember correctly, I believe it was near the Americas restaurant.)
