Turtle Back Zoo Turtle Back Zoo News

Wow! I probably should’ve mentioned that this is my home zoo that I work at. Recently, four Occelated Turkey have replaced the Gray Foxes near the otter exhibit.

Additionally, 3 Pink-Backed Pelicans now share the exhibit with the Penguins (no monkeys or sharks, as of yet.)

Another Bontebok has come to the zoo, a female to pair with the male, and a new Giraffe has arrived to replace Hodari, while the zoo also now is holding a baby Reticulated Giraffe for another zoo.

The female Lions and male have been in the exhibit with each other for the past three weeks, and the male is sometimes warded off by the females scratching and roaring.

The Reptile House now houses a pit of White-Cheeked Turacos.

Lastly, the Flamingo Exhibit opens August 29th and will be exhibiting several Flamingos and some Hyacinth Macaws. Lucky for me that the zoo doesn’t stop renovation, always something interesting to see.

I didn't know they have bontebok! I really need to get around to visiting. Thanks for the update.

@DragonDust101 , I had a keeper at the zoo tell me that Gus, the tamandua can actually be seen on exhibit in an ambassador exhibit in the Wild Jersey section of the zoo. Can you confirm if this is true? I am going on Saturday and would love to be able to spot him.

I did see three cages for ambassador animals, but only one was occupied with an owkl. A sign said they rotated throughout the day, but I only stayed during the morning so I must have missed Gus. I hope to post photos from the zoo this week showing off the newer exhibits. The lion and hyena have an interesting design concept. It reminded me of the Asian ruins theme you often see, but for Africa. The facade for the lion holding building is a grand home and there are flower pots throughout the exhibit. The hyenas had columns and flower pots in their exhibit. It was almost like the animals were intruding on man's land, emphasizing how little land they have left in the 'wild'. Both were spacious for each animal and the two species can rotate between the two spaces. I saw pictures of the old outdoor penguin exhibit and I'm a little surprised they moved them indoors. Although I believe the former exhibit wasn't in the African section of the zoo. The indoor exhibit reminded me of the indoor hippo exhibit at Adventure Aquarium. There was also a dark exhibit in the building for a bushbaby. The flamingo exhibit was fine, with bright color painted facade building fronts around it. I am not sure when the Andean condor exhibit was built, but it looked modern and gave lots of space for its inhabitant.

Oof, that exhibit is way too small for the ocellated turkeys.

At first the opponents did give some (semi)valid complaints of how the money could have been used for other community uses, but then they went into the usual "trapped in small enclosures" bull that has been said like three million times.

it's true but don't get your hopes up. Each time I visit him before I work there, he was always asleep.

Thanks for the tip. I didn't see him at all when I went last fall. Maybe next time.

Does the zoo no longer have bontebok? The species has disappeared from their website.
