TV Series you are into

is Primeval the UK series about dinosaurs coming forward in time, and it had the little blonde girl from S Club 7? That series sucked majorly, and the CGI was crap.

I have never seen Primeval. Can I start with this new series and be ok?

I think you would probably be able to get by without seeing the original series, although you may not understand some of the sub-plots if you haven't seen it.

Also, is the CGI really poor and at the usual crappy TV standard?

I personally quite like the CGI in this new series; the original series didn't have anywhere near as much detail on their creatures and also made the mistake of either making the animals more dramatic than they really were (I personally like them to be at least the right size) or making them grind to a halt whenever a main character appears.

Yes to both.

That series sucked majorly, and the CGI was crap.

How many series of it did you watch (I'm going to assume just the first)? I'll admit the first series was pretty over-cautious and suffered for it while the final two series were pretty naff, but the second series particularly I found quite good.

Regarding the CGI, I just recalled that the animation was all done by Impossible Pictures, the same company who animated Walking With Dinosaurs/Beasts/Monsters- did you find the CGI in those poor too, just out of interest?

I believe Impossible Pictures made a mini-series I quite enjoyed when I was younger called Prehistoric Park with Nigel Marven. I own the series so maybe I should rewatch to refresh the story in my head. I thought the topic was pretty neat and wished they'd continue it.

I own the video tape version of Walking with Dinosaurs and plan on buying the DVD version as our tape player is broken. Even in the choppy form the video tape provided I loved the program. Never seen Monsters or Beasts but I want to desperately.

The Walking with series were awesome, especially Beasts, which was incredibly well done. I have them all on DVD, and have watched them with my little brothers recently.

Prehistoric Park was a neat series (which I also have on DVD), although not as impressive as Walking with, nor as interesting as Primeval. The acting, and especially the dialogue, was disappointing. And I'm not sure that keeping a mammoth with elephants is a good idea. But the premise was brilliant.

I never had too much of a problem with the CG on Primeval, it was just a TV show. I remember thinking the dodos were a bit ridiculous, but most other things were pretty good.

@nanoboy, Primeval isn't just dinosaurs, the "anomalies" open into various times, so you have pre-dinosaur creatures, dinosaurs, beasts, medieval knights trying to kill dinosaurs, dodos, and even creatures from the future.

So what genre is it? Family-oriented action like 'Terra Nova'? Soap opera-horror like '666 Park Avenue'? Downright scary adventure like 'The River'? Weird sci-fi like 'Fringe'?

Primeval would be "family-oriented action", and isn't (very) scary, dark or weird sci-fi-y. Its rated M in NZ, and would probably be a bit scary for pre-teens.

I agree the dialouge and some of the acting was disapointing. I find it interesting that whenever Nigel gets chased by an animal, the camera goes back and forth between Nigel and the beast and the animal is always farther back dispite how much faster it would have been. Bob made me and my little bro laugh.:D Some of the practices like the mammoth and elephant herd and the triceratops tractor might have been a stretch (I can see the tractor thing more than the mammephant herd. All and all, it was a very nice show and it taught me a lot of Extinct animals and introduced me to the coolest pre-dino animal I know of- the Arthropeurla (or maybe the "Swamp Monster").
I saw a preview for Primeval and it looks good. My problem is I can't find it online.

only a few episodes of the first series. I honestly couldn't handle more than that.

I thought the CGI in Walking With Etc was great (although I didn't like the dinosaur series particularly, it was a bit silly), and I'm shocked it was done by the same company. I loved Walking With Beasts!

I thought Prehistoric Park was utter rubbish. But then I don't like Nigel Marvin.

Oh, and in the interests of full disclosure, I liked the S Club 7 tv series :D

I have all five series of the original Primeval, and I didn't mind the CGI because I grew up with Dr Who (the original) so I'm used to cheap effects from the UK.

Like Zooboy, I found the huge turnover of characters annoying, and in the later two series there were some ridiculous subplots. And one of the lead kids (Connor) who started out as a dinosaur geek quickly became a computer/technology whizzkid. I loved the premise, but they took the series in the wrong direction.

And the dodos were ridiculous. Cheap attempt at humour.

Smash
Raising hope
Hot in Cleveland
I can watch alphas
True blood is getting to dark.
Most David Attenborough even if I feel Ive seen them so often I had written the script.

I can't stand programs that spend 20 minutes telling you what they have already told you and 10 telling you something new, Or over dramatising things. (Fish Tank Kings etc)

My brother likes the newer Dr. Who. Did you find the change of characters in Dr. Who annoying as well? It's my understanding that when the characters get old they just have The Doctor die and become reborn. Don't know if I posted it but my brother is trying to get me to watch it.
By the way, Exterminate!!

I'll watch The Simpsons (even though its glory days are over), Family Guy, Big Bang Theory, Two and a Half Men (only reruns with Charlie Sheen, as Ashton Kutcher just isn't meant for it), Survivorman, Man V.S. Wild, and occasionally some programs on Discovery, History, Military, or when actually related to animals, Animal Planet. I'll also occasionally watch South Park and My Wife and Kids (Damon Wayans makes the show). I haven't been watching that much T.V. lately, especially not a lot of Animal Planet since most of its shows now are just either hillbillies reaching into the water and pulling out catfish, or some idiots going out into the woods at night and looking for a hairy ape.

The change in characters ot the change in actors? Usually, when the actor playing the doctor wants to move on, the Doctor regenerates (but they might do it differently in the newer series).

What I don't like about the newer series is the chnage in format - each story is a 45 minute episode, as opposed to 4 or more parts. It's also a lot darker, and some of the attempts at humour are cringe-worthy (in my opinion).

When the return of Dr Who (i.e. with Christopher Eccleston) was announced I thought I wouldn't like the change from four-parters to one-hour [or 45 minute] episodes but it actually works really well. I think it was the right thing to do for today's audiences. And because the modern thing in tv now is to have massive looping arcs in every series imaginable, it sort of works out as multiple hour-long episodes rather than individual ones, if you see what I mean. On the other hand that is sort of annoying if you miss any and can't figure out what the devil is supposed to be going on!!

The original series had big looping arcs too: The Key to Time, The trilogy in E-space, Trial of a TimeLord.

I think the original classic for looping arcs was the X-Files.

Anyone here ever heard of an old show called Animal-X: Natural Mystery Unit? I found some episodes on YouTube and the series makes me laugh. It's kind of like Monster Quest but badly done and obviously fake. I found it while looking for Thylacine videos. Bill Kerr is in it.

Homeland: season finale was a ripper!
