Taronga Western Plains Zoo TWPZ Updates

Personally I feel this birth is more important than that if the elephant calves. Bakhita was the first female born at the zoo and is now responsible for the first second generation birth with a very healthy girl!

Apart from the baby Black rhino born at Dubbo there are three new Giraffe calfs plus the four Cheetah cubs of which the two females are king Cheetahs a mini baby boom

As well as P Horse Foals, Zebra Foal, Bison Calf, Another Giraffe due any day now .

Cheetah Cubs are on display. as are all of the above except the rhino, shouldn't be too long. But mum and bub are very important animals and the pregnancy was taken very seriously so mum hasn't been on display for over 14 months. They want to make sure everything is perfect before they move them to the display yards.

Baby does look healthy from photos I've seen. Seems pretty energetic to.

i think i missed teh zebra foal and looking forward to yet another giraffe.

She has been on display for a while and is one of my favourites at the zoo. I was there just after the zoo opened on the weekend and I'm sure she was playing with me - She was hiding behind a rock and every time I went to walk away she would pop her head up a little, then If i turned around she would drop back down. I then walked off to the gibbons and when I came back she was on the highest point of her exhibit looking at me.

In other news the black rhino exhibit is having work done. No rhino on display but there is a bus that takes people out to the breeding complex to see mum and bub, max of 150 people per day
The Hippo lake has been drained and new fences are being put in.

TWPZ receive an extra $1m from the state government.

:)

I had a quick drive around WPZ yesterday afternoon. There seems to be a bit of work going on out there. At present the new entry is being worked on, the black rhinos are closed to public viewing, the white rhino's exhibit is empty due to work taking place in the exhibit, the hippo lake is empty, the black buck herd has moved into the old fallow deer enclosure and the fallow deers are in with the chital deers( the black buck and fallows have swapped exhibits), the black buck herd has been greatly reduced, the koala area is getting a new fence and the yellow footed rock wallaby exhibit is under renovation.
Does anyone know what is going on with all the work?

the enclosures should hopefully be completed mid july - Lou mentioned the million dolllar boost in funding but I believe it needed to be spent by the end of the financial year. Unfortunately it does mean the closure of the rhino exhibits however there is a shuttle that runs to see bakhita and kufara in the breeding complex, it only runs until 12pm though.
Eland fence was also hightened the viewing deck for the maned wolves was refurbished and completed onfriday afternoon and there will be new fences for the koalas and i believe a macropod will be put in there as well.

The rest of the works are hoped to be completed around october but the amount of rain we've had out this way wasn't really expected.

I assumed that the koala's exhibit would have some macropods in with them. The new fence is alot taller then the old fence.
What is going on around the hippo lake? It looks like a new fence around that aswell.
It would be good to see something completely new out there. From memory the last new exhibit was the asian wetlands.
Do you know of any plans Jakari?

I am not aware of any new plans that may be happening. The zoos are coming to the end of the ten year masterplan. As for the hippos, the lake has been dredged to get rid of all the silt and a new fence is going up on the main dam. The lake at the front of the kiosks with the visitor precinct is also undergoing dredging (sp?).

If you get time at any stage Jarkari would you take a few pics of the upgrade?
