Twycross Zoo Twycross report

I don't like the giraffe enclosure at Twycross, or Dudley for that matter as I'm not a fan of Dudley in general. But Twycross' giraffe paddock may be an appropriate size for the number of giraffes living there, but it still needs redeveloping. So do the great ape outside enclosures

and I think the other person was talking about placing the giraffes in with the ASIAN ELEPHANTS!

Oooops - silly me, misunderstood it. How crass of me.

I'm not sure that the elephant paddack would have room for the elephants and the giraffes together as it stands. And it would be a waste of money to change a brand new area.

However, I'd still like to see the giraffes with a better space, and some private area, as they are permanently on show unless the giraffe house is closed.

Don't get me wrong it certainly does (Chester could also do with a more modern house in my opinion aswell), but there are more pressing matters at the zoos.

yeah, I agree, lots of areas of the zoo need updating, I say that every time I visit. I've been going every year, at least twice, since I was 4 (now in my 20's) and I do see improvements every time I go (enrichment etc) and have got pictures from when I was a kid and some of the monkey enclosures were pretty much empty. They do need to work on outdoor areas for the great apes as well as lots of other animals too

I understand that Dudley are waiting to see if they can use the land just past the chimps (A very large paddock about 20 times the size they are in now) for a new Giraffe/mixed enclosure but do agree that both zoos could do with a bit of updating as far as the Giraffes go

The Giraffe enclosure is no smaller than Londons so does that mean London needs a new enclosure as well for their Giraffes seeing as they house more than Twycross.
As for a new enclosure for the Giraffes at Twycross best space for them is the Elephant House and enclosure wouldn`t take much work to convert it as the doors are probably not far off being high enough any way!!

Well, I would say, yeah they do. At least London's get to spend some of the time in summer browsing from the trees. But London really has every opportunity to double the space available to their giraffes just by opening up the 3 other paddocks adjacent to the giraffe house, even if only on a rotational basis.

IMHO the Twycross giraffe enclosure is equally inapproppriate in this day and age, and more barren than, the enclosure at London.

Would Twycross really lose out if they sent their giraffes elsewhere?

I have really big issues with Dudley Zoo and it's a shame as i'd love to be able to visit more (as the more ppl that visit the more funding they will get, not because I love the place) when I'm visiting family in the midlands. I left there feeling very unhappy and upset :(

My information onthis came from the same person who told us about the Orangutan House in September 2009.
So I think this will happen sooner rather then later

If the giraffes at Dudley get their new paddock what will the existing giraffe enclosure be used for? Anything in threre would have a great space to move, play and run - big cats/gorrillas....... Loads of possibilities but with obvious cost implications.

I really hope Dudley don't get any more great apes! They need to sort out enclosures for the animals they currently have, before they bring in any new animals

I don't think you need worry. I doubt the EEP would sanction any more Great Apes for Dudley, certainly not Gorillas, while things are as they are. The existing housing(outside) is still substandard for Orangutan and the Chimpanzee fencing needs improvement too.

The orangutan housing is awful. A friend of mine worked at the zoo a couple of years ago and said that redevelopment of the outdoor enclosure is limited because it is a listed building. Personally, I'd rebuild them a totally new enclosure somewhere else within the zoo (where I don't know...) but they don't have the funds for that. It's a shame the zoo is the way it is, they need as many visitors as possible to provide funds for improvements, yet I personally feel it's not worth paying almost £12 to get in to.

Is it a listed building. The indoor housing is pretty bad but the outdoor area is ok as far as I'm concerned. The girafes need sorting out are the main animals that need storting out IMHO. I say get rid of them! Maybe build a new enclosure to replace some of those dreadful chimp cages on that site.

One thing the Orangutan house as had the indoor area now refurbished and looks alot better then before and the outside area is not listed but will be refurbished this winter if everything goes to plan as for worth £12.00 there are two atrractions at dudley for the entrance fee that is a zoo and a castle so £6.00 each ain't bad
Anyway this is about Twycross there is an update thread for Dudley Zoo if your interested
I was only saying about the Giraffes because someone else had brought it up

Happy chatting every body

Twiglet,
£12 is very good value! If you say they need more money to help improve the place what would you suggest as an admission cost?
Also please tell us why you don't like the zoo so we can understand (I promise I won't be offended or attack you here), just that you should have good reasons for not liking a place.
In my view the zoo wasn't good going back some years, but IMO it is improving, and I don't think there are any really vile enclosures any more, sure some of them need to be bigger and better for the animals they hold, but that can only happen with more money coming in.
And as Adrian said this might be better discussed on the Dudley forum if you'd like to start a thread there.

Well I managed to get in as an under 16 (I'm 24) which I know was a lie BUT I'm not paying £12 when I knew I'd be depressed seeing the orangs and the leopard because a friend had told me how bad it was! In terms of the 2 attractions, I see your point but castles don't interest me and it's a bit of a hike so I didn't see it other than to go to the loo and get a drink!

I know this is a tywcross thread, but dudley's enclosures etc was discussed, so I added to the discussion. In my opinion, the orang outside house is crap, it's dark and dingy. I know it's new, I only saw it a couple of months ago. I certainly do not think that the outdoor area is acceptable. The climbing structure looks very dated. When i was there I saw bog all for the poor things to do. I sat there for 80% of my visit and they did nothing. I know captive orangs are meant to be "lazy" but all the orangs I have observed are a hell of a lot more active. Another thing that got to me was a chimp keeper. I asked her to help me ID the individuals in teh gruop and she said she couldn't, so I asked her if she was new and she said "no, i've worked here 3 years but they all look the same" so i made it a bit of a personal mission to ID the chimps. It took me 40 mins of close observations to confidently ID all of them!!!

I know there are ppl on here who like, even love dudley, but I am one who does not. I accept that they are improving and I accept the fact that everyone is going to have a different opinion on such matters. There are ppl on here who are not fans of my local, and favourite zoo!

I may continue the discussion in the dudley forum. I will be returning to the zoo in a few months to see if there have been any developments since my last visit.

To get back to Twycross, I visited this week and had my first view of the new developments (I know I'm well behind the times).
The Gents in the Himalaya building was quite interesting - I don't think I've ever seen a toilet with a glass wall before! I had imagined it was more like a hide, where you could see the aviary through a long slit above the urinals. The leafcutting ants toddling round the mirror were a surprise too. I couldn't help wondering if the Ladies has a better view?
The snow leopard enclosure is quite spectacular, but what a waste of space when there is one snow leopard asleep in the corner. A nice of group of Alpine chough with Himalayan monal and possibly something more exotic like wallcreeper or snowcock (instead of the monals), would attract far more attention.
Does anybody know if the separation of the bonobos into male and female groups is temporary, related to the recent births, or is it a longer term situation?

Alan

Well, so long as you went into it with an open mind...

Fair enough if you're not interested but the Castle is part of what you pay for at the gate, in the same way as the theme park at Flamingoland or the house at Longleat - so it's factored into the entrance fee. And you clearly went up to it anywya if you got a drink there!

Bear in mind that a keeper near, or even working with, the chimps may not work with them full time. They could easily be covering from another section (unless they told you otherwise, in which case fair enough). If you spent 40min at the chimp exhibit and about 80% of your visit at the orangs that's at least 2.5 hrs watching the orangs (not factoring in any time spent at other animals or facilities). I'm surprised you'd spend so long making yourself miserable at an exhibit you don't like, but each to their own!

As noted, probably best if this is saved for a Dudley thread. But it seems to me you'd written Dudley off before you got there. What did you make of the lemur walkthrough? Or the otter exhibit (I understand they're back near the Barbary Sheep now?)? Dudley can do good, given the opportunity.

As to Twycross vs. Dudley - it's like choosing between two old, trustworthy friends who both drive you mad with frustration the whole time! I'd probably go with Twycross, but it'd only be because of the more rarity-filled stocklist. It certainly has fewer excuses for it's problems than Dudley.
