Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo News 2011 #2

I think the death of bongo the elderly (rather amazing) gorilla, may have caused achange in the plans for the group locations.

so with the death of bongo, i pressume there is now one group of gorillas only, containing 4 adults and potentially a reintroduced infant in due course?

does any one have any images/plans/renderings of what the new chimp complex is/was supposed to look like, and where would it be?

I doubt they are looking to deliberately breed many more chimps (apart from maybe the odd baby for the public to see) I think they'd be happy just to get them living in compatible groups and eventually into a single group perhaps

$64,000 question I know, but do Twycross EVENTUALLY aim to maintain a purebred group of chimps? Anyone have any ideas?

At the moment the are still 2 groups, but the plan was to reintroduce biddy to Oumbies group. Maybe the problems okanda put this back a little.

The eventual response to the newborn may have had something to do with the fact she had to be removed. A stressful situation ...

The onus would be to set up a stable family group of breeding gorillas. Any slapping and other harassments are part and parcel of that play. The older F just would have had a longer time to settle with the young male and vice versa. Dominance and subservience par excellence ... methinks.

Sorry 'reintroduce' was the wrong word, should have said 'introduce' as Biddy hadn't been in that group yet.

Gorillas-There is currently a pair (Boulas and Biddy-with, until her death, the old female Bongo) and a group (Oumbie, Ozala, Asante, with or without the baby Okanda-currently without). The plan was possibly to add Biddy to the other group, leaving the non-breeding pair Boulas and Bongo together and move them to the planned new accomodation, leaving their house free for chimps. But Bongo's recent death changed that as they now can't move Biddy without leaving Boulas on his own. Male Boulas(probably infertile) is the spanner in the works, without him they could move Biddy to the other group (she is also Ozala's mother) to give them a single group.

Chimps- the 'Complex' was supposed to cover the area roughly taken up by the oldest Gorilla House and Pets corner and maybe more, behind the mansion. I've heard no news about it for some time now.

Michie's tufted deer

Just reading the Wroclaw thread and one of the members has reported the arrival of a female Michie's tufted deer from Twycross. How many do Twycross now have? If ISIS have updated it then there is 2:1 but could if they haven't could this mean the 0:1 has been sent to Wroclaw?

I presume the female sent to Warsaw would be one(the older?) of the offspring they have bred from their pair. So this move would leave the pair plus a male offspring. I'm sure they wouldn't send their breeding female -unless she is now lacking a partner for some reason at Twycross.

I think that is the case, although I didn't know they bred twice.

Visited today - the red handed tamarin family are mow living with the saki monkeys in the old gibbon nursery building (between the variagated spider monkeys and smiler).

Baby Gorilla 'Okanda'

According to their facebook-dated December 14th, the young Gorilla is now 'sleeping overnight in his enclosure' with the staff sleeping nearby in the kitchen. I presume this means he is back living in the Gorilla House permanently but not reunited with his parents yet. I imagine they can see or hear him though.

Hamlyn's Owl-Faced Monkey

According to ISIS, Twycross is now listed as having only 1.0 (one male) of this species. Does anyone know if the female has died, or been sent elsewhere. Will they get another female or move the male too?

Twycross no longer keep the Hamlyn's, although I don't know anything regarding why or since when.

Thanks. I've now noted this on the species' thread in the Europe Forum.

Any further information from anyone about this departure would be welcome.
