Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo news 2012 #1

This may interest some of you...

Terraserver has updated its' satelite photo of Twycross, showing himalaya, the redesigned elephant enclosure and path and the new wetlands area to the east. Bing and Google satelite photos are very out of date - bing's doesn't even show the elephant paddock extension or the last built gorilla house, and googles is still about 5 years old.

The terraserve photo shows that the field south of the zoo is being used as a proper car park now, prob not even only overflow but as a main one given the amount of parking himalaya ate into. That field is the size of the whole zoo and would be ideal for redevelopment for bigger ape exhibits.

Circumstances led me to Twycross on Sunday, and despite being a pretty cold day ( it even snowed for about 30 seconds) I enjoyed my visit, even though I wouldn't class it among my favourites, I don't think lot of it is too bad.
One of the highlights for me was before I even got out of the car, the malayan tapir out in its paddock, only my 3rd visit in 4 years, but first time I've seen it & notice its now back on the map! Biggest disappointment, the no show of the cuscus, though I saw them last time so I can't ask for everything.

Please accept my apologies if the answers to my questions are hidden in another thread, I have read right through this one & can't see them.I'm sure a regular will be able to answer them easily.

How old is the malayan tapir?

What are the plans for the Amur Leopard, I only saw one?

There were barriers preventing public access to the windows (whitewashed) of the old Aardwolf enlosure, has there been a recent arrival?

When is work due to start/finish on the Asian carnivore area?

The Malayan Tapir 'Madge' is thirteen or fourteen, she only ever had one calf with her mate 'Colin' ex Heidelberg, he died in 2008 (?) - The Amur leopard is 'Davidoff' he was born at Twycross in 2006 (Diesel x Izzy) his father Diesel moved to Sedgwick in January.

Plans are in place (Afaik) to bring in a female Amur leopard once she is sourced.

Where are the Martens?

couldn't find either :(
 
Kirks dik-dik in the old Aardwolf enclosure.

was told that they recieved 2males on Friday 13th May 2012, with view to exchanging one of the males for a female in the future.

Thank you both for the info.

Cuscus are at the end of the row of chimp cages, the end nearest the old manor house.
I would like to know where the martens are too?!

Thanks, I know for next time now, whenever that will be lol.

Apparantly the Martens are where the Swamp Monkeys used to be, but I don't know where that was.
 
Thanks Maguari, I know exactly where they are now, they will probably be on full display, maybe even in a different enclosure by the time I visit Twycross next.
 
Thanks, i had a feeling i'd read they were near the wildcats,& did look but obviously not hard enough! I walked through that way to the elephants!

They're not at all obvious if they're not active when you pass, as there're no signs or anything. Rather an odd situation!

Its a shame i didn't look harder as i wanted to see them.now i know they're there i'll wander around that area until i find them next time!
 
When all the Chimps have moved out of the Green Mile, whats happening with it, is it being pulled down or just converted for another animal?

I don't know what is planned, but hope its not due for demolition yet, it would need tidying up a bit, but the area would lend itself to far better (particularly indoor) accomodation than some of the other primates currently have. They could then double up some of the other smaller cages. It would be a fairly inexpensive option

Demolition work has begun at the zoo to remove one of our old chimp enclosures as part of the chimp moves taking place, and future developments at the zoo. Has anyone noticed work going on in the second gorilla house? It's currently being adjusted to house our chimps!

There is also a picture on there facebook page of the building
 
Was thinking green mile could be converted into an enclosure for Fossa to compliment the Lemurs of Madagascar.

I also think that Sloth bears would fit in well with the Indian theme they are aiming for with KUNO
 
So it seems that oumbie and boulas are to go to Longleat, according to information on the longleat thread. This will leave the 2 females in one group and the older female (biddy?). Presumably now they'll be moved into one group and try to find a placid, fertile male to get another group going. Sounds like the best solution imho, the group as it stands clearly wasn't working, and asante should porbably stay where she is with a female she knows.

It looks to me like the enclosure just up from Danny and Tommy's old one. The one where the snow leopards were first kept, and where they so shines keep hatchlings.
