Had a quick visit yesterday (19th May) due to weather conditions but must admit I was a little surprised by the amount of empty enclosures around the zoo.

Did manage to see both species of Tapir also the Yellow throated martins (down by the Red Crowned Cranes) and a first for me were the following-

Purple Heron, Mountain Bamboo Partridge these were especially beautiful.

Babies on display were the Bonobo, Orangutan, White Fronted Marmoset, Chilean Lapwing & Mallard

Visited the Wetlands Reserve and I feel as a regular visitior to Bird reserves that this could be a wonderful exhibit for the zoo if only they would fence off both sides of the pathway and insert peep holes every now and then to give the wildlife some privacy (most good reserves have now started doing this) the main pool at the bottom could do with having the trees around cut down so as not to give the raptors any where to perch and hopefully this will bring in the waders I think they are hoping for.

Did you see how many Snow Leopards there was? I heard recently that the two cubs have been assigned by the Studbook holder to France and Germany however, I don't think this will be until November/December at the very earliest.

I went on Monday (14th May) and I only saw three Snow Leopards (they hardly moved all day) there of course could have been another but I didn't see it at any point.

Thanks, it is possible that all four were together still as I'm sure something would have been said. Do you have any photos you could post of them it might help sum up the situation better.

As I said there could have been another (indoors or an outdoor area which isn't visible from any viewing area etc. but if it had been possible to spot it I would like to think I would have spotted it).

I'm just saying what I saw needless to say I can't see inside or any area outside that is not visible.

Unfortunately I didn't take any photos as how they were positioned wouldn't have made a great picture and not any better than what I had taken previously.

I am looking for the names of the last two bonobo youngsters at Twycross Zoo (Chekas and Maringos offspring). Are Twycross insiders able to help me??

Maringo's baby is called "Lopori" and Cheka's baby is called "Malaika"

Thanks, Nisha...

Am I right, that "Malaika" (Chekas baby) is a male and "Lopori" (Maringas baby) a female, the names are confusing?

Apologies for the confusion, Chekas baby is a male called Winton, Not Malaika. Lopori is a female as you say (named after a river in the Congo)

Winton (m) and malaika (f) are the two babies (both nearly 2 now) who are being raised by their mums in the group. I'm not great with bonobo names but malaika's mum is the older of the 2 females.

Lopori (f) is the latest edition and is currently being raised off show with the hope of reintroducing her with a foster mum.

I am confused, never heard about "Malaika... Who is her mother, Diatou, Banja???

According to the 2010 Annual report, Malaika is Diatou's baby. Born within a few weeks of Winton to Cheka. Hence why the didn't do an awful lot of publicity on the second birth.

On another note: Maringa/Maringo also gave birth twice that year (in February and November) but neither baby survived

This is the latest news on the transfer of the Chimps at the zoo (taken from twycross zoo face book page)

LATEST CHIMP NEWS: As many of you are aware, Twycross Zoo is in the process of securing funds to enable us to build new chimp enclosures. In the meantime we have been working very hard to make improvements to our current chimp groups…

In 2011 we introduced Jambo and Tojo to a larger group and Danny and Tommy have moved from their building to the same Chimp Complex where they will later join the group.

Continuing these introductions, Wednesday and yesterday saw the successful move of eight chimps: Jambo, Flynn, Charlotte, Josie, Genet, Vicky and Tojo who now reside in a newly renovated enclosure beside our Gorilla House.

The move went very well and without any complications, and the eight chimps are all on show in their new home.

The aim of the moves, which are still ongoing is to collaborate our several groups of chimps and mix them together so that we have fewer but larger social groups which will be a great advance in their welfare and better reflect their situation in the wild

I will update again very shortly

Kind Regards

Adrian

Bit confused here, as Jambo & Tojo have already moved once(into the oldest Gorilla House group.) Is that Ricky's group?

Now it seems they and some others- the other Green Milers? (but not Ricky?) have moved again into the 'Joe' Gorilla House. Or have I got this all wrong?

Good to hear they are still working at getting them into bigger groups though.

It was Ricky's group, he's now going to meet Noddy, Mongo and Coco soon. Must not have taken kindly to Alf Garnett taking over!

I hope he gets settled, he's a lovely chimp's chimp rather than a humanised chimp.
