Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo news 2012 #2

Notes from a quick visit today:

6, Not seen it mentioned anywhere else, but there is also a new 2012 Guide Book on sale, with 2 Bonobos on the cover.

It sure has..........

search under the "New Zoo Guidebooks" thread and Zooman64 reported the new Twycross 2012 guidebook in June.

I've already purchased my copy of the new 2012 Twycross guidebook and I think it's worth the money.

Which enclosure are the Coati and Bush Dogs going in? It will be lovely to see Bush Dogs back at Twycross. I hope the Owls will have a nice modern enclosure too.

Do you know what the plans are for the old Penguin pool?

Anymore news on the Kuno project? I would also like to see the Otters in that area.

Also what is the latest on the new Chimp plans?

I was wondering the same thing, it's a shame the pair have gone. Colchester is now the only place to hold these and they have 0.5.

Err... I Don't know where you've got that information from, but from my recollection and a quick google, id say that Colchester, Dudley and the National Seal Sanctuary in Cornwall still have some in the UK...

Plus, last I heard Edinburgh still had theirs :p

So the coatis are going where the sea lions were then? The map in the middle of the new 2012 guidebook states the former sea lion enclosure as 'penguins'

Yes, they are going where the Sea Lions once were.

The signs on the barriers surrounding that pool had about the Coati mixed exhibit, and the diagram certainly looks like its in that exhibit too :p

Also, the leaflet they hand to you on entry has a new updated map in it, which indicates both the dik dik enclosure (which isn't on the map in the guide book), as well as showing that the New Coati exhibit will be where the sealions were :D

Ahh kk, thanks MT :) - considering the guide only came out about 10-12 weeks ago if June 2012 is correct, it shows how quickly plans can change in a zoological setting.

EDIT: Allow another good few weeks for print, not sure how long that would take, so not sure when the zoo would have finished the guide. Still, it doesn't seem like a long time.

I'm very pleased that Twycross has finally given up on sealions. I would have been happy if they'd really invested in a larger, much improved facility, however rather than keeping them on I'm glad they've left that exhibit.

Forgot about Dudley, wasn't aware of the National Seal Sanctuary. It's a shame there's been no breeding of the Patagonian Sea Lions, Twycross had a male pup around about this time last year but that didn't survive.:(

I wasn't mentioning Edinburgh as their plan is to move their male ('Sofus') out of the collection by the end of the year. :p

This has been discussed on a few threads in the past, including this one:

http://www.zoochat.com/38/most-recent-patagonian-southern-sealion-uk-136020/index2.html

I think Curraghs wildlife park were the last collection in the British Isles to successfully rear this species. I've no idea what the issue is, seeing as other European zoos (and circuses) manage to breed them. Part of me wonders if there is reluctance on the part of Colchester to try breeding them, but then they are about the only UK collection with a facility anywhere near suitable for this IMHO.

EAZA still list Twycross as the ESB studbook holder for Southern (Patagonian) sealions.

I have to agree that Twycross had one of the worst sealion enclosures i've seen & Colchester the best, it's a shame they dont seem interested in breeding their 5? Females.
The map i got at Twycross as long ago as april had penguins in the sealion pool, i assumed it was just a misprint!
Not sure where all these changes leave Kuno? Probably how it was in april, nowhere except a few posters!!

Actually having said colchester was the best, probably from the sealions' point of view, Blackpool takes some beating, not southern sealions though obviously!

Shame to see the sea lions go but that enclosure really wasn't doing them any favours. Interesting to note that although the Coati/Bush Dog picture shows N. nasua, the text talks about White-nosed. Could be in the midst of something of a UK resurgence for this species.

I do hope so :) a bit of a resurgence for bush dogs too, after two collections that I know of - Edinburgh and Dudley - have gone out of them in the past year or so.

I was wondering the same thing, it's a shame the pair have gone. Colchester is now the only place to hold these and they have 0.5.

Things aren't quite that dire - Dudley still have their 1.2, and - for the next week or so - Edinburgh still has 1.0.

Still not too hopeful for the species in the UK though.

1, New signage has gone up all across the Zoo, with two different styles, a small square with basic information, and a much larger design with much more info for some other species. Also now the Yellow-throated Martens are finally labelled.

Are they properly on display now, if so where?

3, To add to previous posts, from the exhibit drawings (see attchments), the old Sealion pool will become the Coati Exhibit, mixed with Bush Dogs. Sealions are seemingly not in the zoo anymore.

Imaginative, good to see Bush Dogs back (should be a very "showy" enclosure with both them and Coatis). To be honest I'm glad to see the Sea Lions gone, the enclosure was ridiculously small for them and was a real blight on the zoo.

That's the exciting, dynamic ever-changing plan that is is Twycross:D.

Anyone want to start a sweepstake? At this rate NWCP will beat it:D.

Although the zoo has decided to discontinue with sea lions which will be a miss it appears that most members agree with this decision due to the exhibit not being up to standard, which I respect from an animal welfare point of view, but where have the Twycross sea lions been transferred to, to somewhere better or worse?. Secondly, do any members who have may have visited in the last week see how Asante is doing since Biddy was moved into the new gorilla house with the others?, also how many chimps are still living in the green mile, is there any sign of them being rehoused into Joe's gorilla house with the others that have recently moved there?. I also wonder if the chimps that are to live in this house will be integrated into one group or kept separate into two, or perhaps, initially housed as two groups with the intention of slowly inter grating them into one.

I'm sorry but this news just makes me very angry!
Why on earth would they not use that space for a modern open top monkey enclosure to move forward and release some of their amazing primates from the many 'bird aviaries' they still use?
stupid!

I thought the Twycross Sealion exhibit was 'okay', but with the important downside of being too small. Could they not have enlarged it considerably, thus being able to keep a popular animal species in the collection?

Was it cost that prevented that happening?
