Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo news 2012 #4

Next door: M - Ricky and mongo (he was on the green mile with coco and noddy)

So from your list there are eight(?) Chimps in 'Jambo's group in one side of the transformed Gorilla House(now a Chimp House).

One other question- In that house is there still a mesh 'window' in the wall between the two inside dens, so the groups on each side can see/touch etc or has it been blocked off?

The mesh windows were covered when the gorilllas boulas and biddy were still in there. They are currently still covered but they definitely know who's next door.

twycross are getting dinosaurs spotted it on biaza just now so follows the trend of chester and other zoos

A cheaper option than building a new carnivore area or chimp enclosure! I said enough about my views on this subject re: Bristol, so i wont repeat it! If it brings in more revenue i guess i just have to accept it, i just hope they're confined to a corner like atBlackpool so i dont have to see them!

Twycross have a nice big empty space bang smack in the middle of the zoo right, where they used to have a monkey house, that would be my guess as where they are going to put them, also given the fact that it looked like they were putting in some new paths across that area when i visited, the other weekend!

No enclosure building costs, no feed bills, no salaries to pay for staff to look after them, plus using up some empty spaces maybe? I can certainly see why Dinosaurs are a desirable move for Twycross at present.;)

Unfortunately I dont consider this a desirable move for any serious zoo to make! Sadly more seem to be doing it, even Linton have a few! I just hope not too many catch onto this! Enough said, someone confiscate my phone and computer quick!

Depends on how it's done. Blackpool's are pretty cheesy and not to my taste. The Chester/Bristol ones are much better - and Chester's interpretation was excellent. I know it's not live animals, but if it's done properly it is a zoological display, and handy for bringing home the full impact of the word 'extinct'.

Whether it's what Twycross ought to do right now is a different question, though I understand Chester's dinos have been credited with bringing in a mass of extra income that may well be welcome at Twycross.

Agree about the need for a quick rise in income, as i said earlier, i'll have to put up with it if it pays for new or improved enclosures. A shame to me it seems to be the way these days, i preferred Tarzan's ideas, but i guess pony rides would be a h&s issue!

Nor do I, but I can see why it might be for the zoos, and particularly for Twycross at this time too. IMO they are better suited to a themepark-type display, but there we are.... if they bring in much needed revenue that can then be used to benefit the Zoo's living inhabitants, that can only be a good thing.

Thank you for that:)Dinosaurs, or rather fibre glass models, I disagree with Maguari's suggestion that this is zoological, they are fibre glass models, not even stuffed examples of animals that once lived and breathed, what exactly is happening here, perhaps they are going "none animal", like what has happened at the circus, incidentally, I wonder how much these models cost, I bet they aren't cheap, Will these models increase visitor numbers?, will the visitor feel as if, after leaving the zoo, their visit has been more enjoyable after experiencing the dinosaurs, I suggest not, get the ponies saddled up for the kids to have a ride on in this space:)

If they were installing robotic models of lions, tigers and bears than I'd agree!

Zoology = study of animals, dinosaurs = animals. Therefore, dinosaurs presented in a moderately educational context = zoology.

And the Chester/Bristol ones certainly aren't fibreglass. ;)

Chester's made a considerable profit and boosted visitor numbers significantly - it was one of the busiest areas of the zoo on every visit I made while they were there.

I simply don't see the pony rides competing! :)

I'm certainly not advocating them becoming the main attraction at any decent zoo, but a very welcome part of the puzzle (and far preferable to Twycross' fun fair rides or Bristol's rope course).

I was shocked when a zoo of Chester's standing went down this tacky 'theme park' type route (surely its animals should be enough of an attraction!)& even more so Bristol with it's lack of space(this includes the rope course, which i dont object to so much at howletts or woburn), so i guess it's no surprise Twycross are taking this desperate course!
I just hope ZSL, Colchester or Edinburgh don't feel the need to follow suit.

Exactly, dread the thought of these models of dinosaurs, made of fibre glass or any other material gracing Barclay Court at London, or at Edinburgh at the top of the hill, quite agree, I cannot understand Chester involving themselves with this "attraction", they have excellent visitor numbers without this, also Bristol, healthy visitor numbers, and quite frankly due to their limited 12 acres, I would say quite literally "a waste of space", As always, in fairness to Twycross, there has been no official statement stating that these monsters/monstrosities are actually coming to the zoo, and if they are, where exactly they will be situated, time will tell

I have to disagree, and whilst I'm not a huge fan of them myself, I can see the reasons and benefits. Chester's was a good display, it did boost visitor numbers, they didn't look as bad as some I've seen and they had a good amount of educational material.

If somebody can give a productive argument against them other than personal opinion, then I will concede, but I can only see positives [I'm going with Chester to defend here, since it's the collection I know best]:

Cost = not a valid argument, they started making profit on the dinosaurs pretty much straight away. The income from them far outweighed the cost.

Space = They were put in an area of the zoo that hasn't had animal exhibits for years, and that to my knowledge won't have any enclosures on it in the near future.

I dislike them, yes - but I can't think of a good reason that Chester were wrong to have them.

[Twycross could be different, in its current position it could tip the balance either way. I would argue that a lot will depend on their success].

"Something BIG is coming to Twycross Zoo"

and sadly it's not a bull elephant, rhino, hippo or giraffe(almost forgot they just got rid of them, but i'm sure a model T-Rex will be much more exciting-to some)!
