Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo news 2013 #1

@Al, Aquazoo in the Netherlands succesfully mixes crowned lemurs with red-bellied lemurs. The crowned are an all-male group and the red-bellied a very succesfull breeding group.

New map

Twycross have a new map on their website.

I, like many others on here am very happy with the small scale improvements being made around the place. Interesting that the Malayan Tapir enclosure is not listed. What is that space and the paddock next to the entrance road being used for these days?

I agree entirely regarding the small improvements - it's just what the place needed.

That said, the wanton apostrophe abuse on the map page of the website is truly something to behold.

Ouch!

At least they are consistent, it was called "Monkey's outside" the first time they announced it! Still waiting for the animatronic "Monkey's inside" display!

I guess since the death of the last animal, that's it for Tywcross and Malayan tapirs? I would be very surprised if they ever brought in new animals, but then its not inconceivable if there are individuals available.

Does anyone have any knowledge of the history of this species at Twycross? I'm sure there have been births, at least one hand-reared animal in the 80s/early 90s, but I don't know of any that were successfully reared.

:D

As for consistency though, they have 'Amur Leopard's' and 'Amur leopards' on the same line at one point! :D

That was my summation of the situation too. I can't see why they should bother, though they aren't doing very well with Brazilians either at present.:( However that's probably just a stroke of bad luck and they are obviously far more readily obtainable where replacements are concerned.

Given the indifferent record with Malayans at Twycross and that they were often virtually invisible anyway, I don't imagine we will see them there again. I rather hope not anyway.

They need a quick course in 'English writing' perhaps? Very unprofessional to allow bad grammar like that on their publicity. Slipping standards!

Well yes, a tad unprofessional perhaps putting the punctuation marks in the wrong places, but if that is the only complaint we have about this zoo at present compared to what was commented upon in the recent past then I think this is very trivial:), I find the news of what is happening at this zoo with their recent developments to be very encouraging, I am not, as I have commented upon previously not a great fan of the dinosaurs, but if they capture the public's imagination and bring them to the zoo with their admission money, all well and good, although the new attractions at this zoo are not major it is nice to read positive news about this zoo and I hope all the work done at the zoo in recent times pays off for them and that they really have something to celebrate in this their 50th anniversary year, best of luck Twycross.

I would make a comment like that whatever Zoo it was- it wasn't aimed specifically as another dig at poor old Twycross.;)

Perhaps with the recent new (and upcoming) exhibits, final disappearance of the infamous Chimp Row/Green Mile, a better composed and more settled Gorilla group + new baby, PC for the Elephants etc, then things will be better at Twycross this coming season.

Twycross would have gone out of Malayan Tapirs this year even if she hadn't died,as there was a plan to move her to another collection in Europe!

Had a very quick afternoon visit yesterday. The various projects are coming along nicely. Lemur walk through looks good, very spacious.

I saw a leopard!! Relaxed, chilled out and not pacing. I'm not sure which one it was though.

Was surprised to see a sign at the entrance saying it was 20% off during all the works going on till about the 21st march (can't quite remember the exact date). A great idea but I haven't seen it advertised on fb etc.

Some photos on Twycross Zoo's facebook page have been put on over the past week or so of the new "Lemur Walkthrough, Tortoises and Primates Outside".

I think those names are all okay...

Photos I've seen of Ozala recently show her to be in much better condition coatwise than when the previous baby Okanda was born -he is currently being handraised at Stuttgart- so I presume she is much less stressed in the larger and settled group and that everything will go smoothly this time. Lets hope so as we don't need more handraised males!

The installation of water drinkers will help instead of plastic bottles, hydration is important when lactating.

When I visited last October, I was struck by how many bottles of water they had. So they don't have a built-in water supply? I must say I can't recall seeing the orangs using a water drinker either.

Drinkers

30% of Apes have drinkers installed, not enough in my opinion, a basic necessity is water. Perhaps as the zoo enters its next 50 years this will be addressed. I hope so, it costs pennies............

I hope so too. The bottles look awful and enforce unnatural behaviour - 'ooh look, he's drinking from a bottle'.
