Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo news 2013 #2

New male dusky leaf monkey has arrived at twycross from Alabama.

Does anyone know if they have brought in just this one new male, or are there others from another source as well? either way I am very encouraged that they are continuing with them and not letting them die out.

They arnt celebrating the 50 years? Strange have they forgot or saving money to spend on the Zoo?

Not another zoo that's ashamed of its past?! Even Marwell (one of biggest culprits for that) celebrated its 40th birthday last year!
Even if it were just a late opening evening or two- those events are actually a gold mine for zoos from what i've experienced. Then celebrating would actually make money rather than cost anything.

I applaud the new interest in this highly attractive langur species.
Thanks in no small part to Burger's Zoo ... as new ESB/EEP holder.

The number of illegally held duskies in S.E. Asia is shocking and could be a good source to re-instate a breeding programme proper.

Exactly, what a better way of attracting visitors to the zoo in Spring week when the kids are off school than promoting the 50th anniversary,

Just uploaded photos from a visit on Saturday - frankly, even in the four months since I was last there the place feels transformed.

I still miss the giraffes and one or two others, but otherwise pretty much everywhere you look there are major improvements.

The new open guenon exhibit is fine - not remarkable in zoo terms overall but in Twycross terms revolutionary. The lemur walkthrough is also very good - and both finally give some of the lawns/empty space over to the animals. The new giant tortoise outdoor area is very good as well - much more attractive than almost any other exhibit at the zoo. The new leopard enclosure in the old 'Green Mile' is probably the best they could do with that building, and at least allows for cats to be separated without being shut in. The Bush Dog/coati exhibit continues to be a great display.

Perhaps most pleasingly, the massively frustrating ticket system for the Tropical House has been abandoned and you can now tour the house as and when you wish. And perfectly nice it is too.

Dinosaur Valley is rather familiar but a definite improvement over the funfair.

Even the scratched glass on the hyaena enclosure has been replaced.

Put briefly, the zoo hasn't left me feeling this positive about its direction in years. It feels like they may finally have broken the cycle.

Just looked at your pictures and it does seem to be completely transformed, the sunshine probably helps though! ;) I'm particularly impressed with the Amur leopard and siamang enclosures, much better than when they were housing chimps!
It's also fantastic that the tropical house is no longer ticketed, that was an absolute waste of time and the tour guides clearly wanted to be doing something else on my previous visits.

Excellent :)

Does anyone know if the zoo will continue to breed elephants via AI, if it has not already?

I concur Maguari, I visited recently and was very heartened by the changes - I genuinely thought Twycross was on the brink of going bust towards the end of last year but the staff and keepers there have really turned the place around. I have been impressed by the way they have dealt with the husbandry of their Chimp collective :O) they needed to do something and they have taken time to not only sort out the best relationship groupings but also improved their enclosures no end. I have never seen the Twycross chimps quite so chilled out as when I saw them.
The green mile is fine for the Amur Leopards considering they have had to make do and mend - I really hope that Davidoff and Kristen settle down and become a proper pair - Davidoff looked very stressed when I went BUT he had only just been moved and he could smell his new lady friend but hadn't got access yet - so I'm happy that they just need a bit of time.
The lemur walk through is nice - they were all hiding when I went but I like what they have built and it'll bed down nicely.

One wonders why they did it in the first place- perhaps one day someone said' why are we bothering to do this'?- and no-one had an answer!:)

Encouraging news from other parts of the Zoo as well.

Everytime I go to this zoo it always looks busy when compared to my zoo Dudley, it also had some of it's newer enclosures paid for (AFAIK), so I don't get how they could get into such a mess, others with far greater knowledge than me would have the answer.
I also have to agree that the last time I went it did look better, so I must get back soon to see the recent lemur opening.

Happy Birthday Twycross Zoo, fifty years old today.

Glad it's made it this far! As a recent visitor (only been going there annually for last 4 or 5 years), my view of the place is not based on what it used to be like and i have to say i do like it. It's far from perfect and although it's lost a few species recently, those running the zoo do appear to be making efforts to replace them and move animals around to provide better accomodation cheaply.
I hope the carnivore area still goes ahead, as this would be a real plus for the zoo.
If only i could find something as positive to say about Marwell, that IS a zoo on the point of collapse!

Although it seemed that the zoo weren't bothering doing anything for the 50th Anniversary, I've just found this online:

Zoo unveils 50th celebrations | 24/05/2013 | Attractions | News

The anniversary kick-starts a year-long calendar of special events, including Twycross Zoo’s 50th Anniversary Summer Sundown Weekender, a wildlife photography competition, a 50th anniversary commemorative book, a Summer Reception for local business people, a 50th Gala Fundraiser for Easter 2014, a Memorial Tribute to Mary Branker, the Zoo’s very first vet, and much more.

I am pleased they are producing a commemorative booklet for the 50th anniversary, just a pity they didn't have it on sale earlier,at the latest for this weekend's anniversary, they have lost potential sales by delaying this, bearing in mind most visitors will only visit once, at the most in a year, so have lost out on a bit of extra revenue, better late than never though.
